The Fabulous Fuji X owners thread

I have switched from a D800 to an XT-1. Sure there is a difference in image quality but I guess that is the case with any camera you compare with a D800. When Nikon brought out the DF I was really excited and was looking forward to replace my D800 with it but when I held it in store it just didn't feel right and my lovely Sigma 35mm F1.4 ART didn't balance well. The XT-1 is exactly what the DF isn't for me and coupled with the amazing 23mm F1.4 and 14mm F2.8 you just can't go wrong.

Fadi, thats good to hear - I'm not expecting to replicate the IQ of the D800 but if I'm honest with myself I don't really need the 36MP - I'll miss the low light performance but most of my low light stuff is done on a tripod at ISO 100/200 anyway. I'm going to make a fair amount of cash selling my D800, 16-35, Sigma 35mm and Nikon 50mm and have plenty left over by the time I've bought an X-T1 and 23mm.

Really looking forward to getting it - I briefly had an X-Pro 1 in 2012 and loved the image quality but hated the AF (which is much better on the X-T1 I understand) so I know what I'm getting and frankly I'm hoping it will allow me to enjoy my photography a bit more - I've liked using the D800 but its just too big and heavy for me to be able to take all the time - will miss full frame but I might actually give a used Sony A7 a try if I see one being sold - looks a cracker from an IQ / Low Light point of view but not enough lenses yet!

I was very tempted by the A7 but the lens option is not good enough for me at the moment but would be very tempted to get a used one at a good price though :) I am sure you will enjoy the XT-1 :D

I've actually taken the somewhat unusual (around here anyway) approach of ordering UK Stock from Amazon - about £100 more than a Grey import but at least I've got warranty/etc.

I only see body only for £1049 on Amazon? Panamoz are doing it for £855

I got an UK one, there might still be the £250 voucher going of the 18-135mm if that lens interest you :)

So here is the box with the sticker

Here the sticker here :)

Its on top of the box its a sticker, you just have to register your camera with Fuji UK :)

Ah ok, is the money off just the 18-135 or can you chose any lens?

Edit: Just the 18-135 then. Hard to say if it's any good yet as it isn't out.

Well its here and its a thing of beauty! - Smaller than I expected actually (Smaller than the X-Pro 1) and its maybe not ideal for my big hands but I'm sure with the vertical grip it should be fine hopefully!

Great news, did you get the money off a lens sticker on the box?

Their also the other grip that makes handling a bit easier :)

Well the D800 and Nikon full frame kit is up for sale - Fuji XT1 and 23mm will be my kit for the next wee while, need to consider my next lens!

I m taking my time to see the lenses they are bringing this year. But if you would like to get more lenses soon I can recommend the 40mm f2.8 and the 35mm f1.4. The Zeiss 32mm is really excellent but more expensive and it's f1.8

They will get it send to fuji for a clean. It might take some time and all i can do is keep you updated. If another lens becomes available in the meantime and you go for it then I will just start a sale thread for mine. I hope that this is Ok?

WRONG thread

Interesting article but does that mean the a full frame Fuji X-Trans CMOS design would be out of this world ;)

Depend what you mean by out of this world...
But it would bring all its advantages to the FF world, which would be veeeeeeerrrrrrrry nice.....................

Went into a camera shop today to have a look and handle a XT-1

Certainly a solid and weighty little thing, feels nicely made and is very pleasing on the eye

Looking through the viewfinder is certainly different, can't say I was that impressed compared to an OVF. Seemed to focus quickly and dial controls were very nice, pads on the back not so much though. Tilt LCD might be handy, thought they might have hinged it on the side too, bit of a half hearted attempt

Admittedly the image quality is of paramount importance, didn't get to check that out, but all in all think I will be staying with my 5D MkI & II for now. Weight saving would be very nice, but just didn't take to the viewfinder and some of the fiddly controls, overall I felt it was just too small even though I don't have overly large hands.

It does have a tilt LCD??? Side hinged lcd's are easier to snap off. Trusts me I've been there. It's better the way it is.

I think he was suggesting the screen should be hinged from the Left, right or both hand side as well as the up and down articulation ? How this would work in practicable terms I have no idea. !

I already have one foot in the door, cart before the horse and all thatafter buying the OEM case off Simon :) , and currently I am sitting on the fence over taking the plunge and have even been looking at the OMD-EM-1 as an alternative to the XT1 as I already have a few M4/3 lenses to go with the Panasonic G5 IR converted body.

I just take so long to make up my mind!!

...........oh and I would have preferred the screen to be fully articulating like the Panasonics it is very handy being able to tuck the screen away to protect it.

Ah right, although I don't see the point, I hated looking at the screen in live view when it wasn't central to the shot.

I have never used an articulated screen, or even an LCD in my life before having used an optical viewfinder all my life on Nikons but I have found it really good for low level shots, I'm getting too old to lay on the ground and for photographing over obstacles / obstructions etc.

I've gone the detached screen route on my X-T1. Well, I mean I've got an Android tablet to use as a remote control for it! Been out this morning with the camera (not played the remote game yet, although I've downloaded the apps I need to do so) and found the tiltable screen fine for my uses. Other than shooting round corners and selfies, I can't see much use for more axes of articulation and as said, the multi angle ones always seem flimsy and vulnerable.

For my needs the screen is fine as it is. The EVF on the XT-1 is excellent and it is matter of getting used to it. Before owning an XT-1, EVFs didn't work for me and I was totally on the OVF's side of the argument but with the XT-1's EVF I am happy to use both now. Having said that and being spoiled by Nikon's OVFs and the XT-1's EVF, I won't be keen on using Canon's OVFs apart from the 5D mark 3 and the 1Dx.

The big thing that made me pick the Fuji over the Olympus, was the very good high iso performance :)

If the kit lens is the 18-55, it's more expensive than quite a few complete kits!

The fully articulated screen is one feature I found really useful on the Panasonic G2 and miss on my Sony A7. When you're lining up portrait format shots on a small tripod on the ground or in confined spaces, it's a godsend.

It also meant I could reverse the screen for protection and never worry about scratching it. Oh, and it stayed like that a lot of the time to help stop me chimping :)

I never felt like it would snap off.

First image shows the 'manual focus assist' on Fuji X-T1 with Zeiss Touit 50mm f/2.8. Subject is my Libya UN medal. Although the AF is excellent and very quick to focus, the MF enables you to define your required focus point. This isn't so
important when the subject is on a flat plane, but more prevalent when the surface is bevelled or uneven such as the flowers I shot yesterday. I hope to try some focus-stacking next for this subject.
The £20 was shot at f/22. I'm quite impressed with the depth of field which has rendered not only the coins but the £20 clearly.

Does the Zeiss 50mm F2.8 extend when focusing or is it all internal focusing please?

That's it ! It has a clever internal floating element system, not that I have dissected it so I am unable to confirm! It's not like the Fujinon 60mm which does protrude and has macro has a ratio of 1:1

It is incredibly light but the MF is very smooth, the AF very fast and the aperture ring very positive. It's a joy to use.
