Came across this whilst browsing my newsfeed on Facebook this morning. Whilst this guy was obviously shifty and up to no good, I can't help think that we're all slowly becoming tarred with that same brush.

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10200492586776792&set=p.10200492586776792&type=1

Make of this what you will.

The comment that finished me off was: "Law states that if he does not have the permission of parents then the photos have to be deleted and memory card formatted, at least that's what I thought"

Jesus Christ.

Suspicious yes just by his actions and being in the same place for that length of time, hiding a camera each time as well is not what an honest photographer would do, unless in somewhere that a camera might be snatched.

But try taking a photograph in a holiday place without children being in the picture. I have tried at various zoos etc and had to wait some considerable time to take a photo without some kid getting into shot just as I am about to take a photo. not only kids but grownups also have no thought about getting in the way when shooting stills or videos.

Have to add I would never belong to facebook anyway ,it seems to cause more problems than any other medium

I was at a birds of prey day, there was a little girl with a bird on her hand, looked really good. I asked the adult with her if it was okay to take a pic, he said no problem, I got his email and sent him a copy, he was really pleased. In comparison, the rest of the day any pics I took that had people in them background, I blurred the faces before posting them on Flickr.

I totally applaud the lengths you've gone to Terry but I guess my point is that you shouldn't have to go to those lengths. When did the world become so sensitive?!

Unfortunate Facebook does give the ignorant minority a voice and they seem to thrive on mock-outrage. You should have to pass a test before being allowed to set up an account :)

Testicles.

Why didn't he take a shot showing the face? Why no shot showing a camera? He claims that the police told him this bloke had shots of kids getting changed or in swimsuits. The police a/ wouldn't have shared that information, and b/ would almost certainly have questioned the perpetrator further. This is just some sad act no-life trying to be important. If I was the bloke sitting down having an innocent rest, I'd be suing.

In other news, I spend all day yesterday photographing (mostly) youngsters in body revealing riding gear. The parents were delighted.

Brilliant.

Amazing how some people seem to thrive on mock-outrage and mob mentality.

Agreed, the Police would not have any authority to look at his camera / sd card anyway, not without a court order :bang:

Not defending his actions, just voicing my views and as for facebook,I avoid it like the plague, Jeremy Kyle's waiting room :lol:

Les

What a pack of judgemental, knee jerk muppets. And from their comments some seem prone to violence.

Scum like this should be rounded up and thrown in jail so that decent people can enjoy a day out without these possibly violent thugs intimidating everyone.

If any of these muppets are parents I pity the children. Maybe they should be taken into care.

And on a more serious note... If I'd been sat on the grass my camera bag would be in front of me and I'd get it out to shoot and then put it back again. I suppose that makes me a paedophile :help:

Of course I don't know what he was actually taking pictures of but that would hardly matter to people who think like this and post stuff like this on facebook.

Agreed! there is no way the police would divulge any information like that, Fb is full of crap that likes to scare people, especially when children are concerened!

Don't get me wrong i know there is plenty wrong with some people blah blah blah but this smacks of media nonsense..

Me too! i often go places and constantly take my camera in and out of my bag when sitting down..

It's sad that our little hobby makes so many people suspicious.

I've given up taking my camera to my local park and in fact I've given up going there alone as I'm just sick of the looks I get from women in their 30's and 40's. There must be something about that age group that makes them think that every man on his own is a paedophile. Younger or older women don't seem to be so... vicious looking. I also wont go to the beach with my camera when the kids are off school unless it's early morning. I have some free time today but I'll pass and wait until next week when the kids are back to school.

It's partly my fault for being too sensitive but being stared at by some woman as if she wants to cut my manhood off and feed it the the seagulls tends to spoil what should be an enjoyable experience, taking pictures as a hobby.

PS, If there are ever any kids in my shots it at extreme distance or when they run into my shot.

You know what I see? This clown has taken a picture, of someone he saw maybe taking a picture, and this fool also includes kids in the backdrop. What makes him so special and righteous? I think we should all try add him on fb just to call him a fool. Scare mongering like that should be illegal. It's your modern version of the witch hunt. Busy bodies who just crave drama and attention. I'd bet he has more weird secrets than the guy he photographed.

What happens if the picture is true but the story is made up... what happens if this guy doesnt even have a camera in the bag and is a regualr on that slope and someone doesnt like him...

I have seen posts on facebook where someone posts a full on pic.. head and shoulders.. and says this man has been hanging about schools.. pass it on.. save the children.... and people do.. based simply on a facebook message.. they then add a bit more.. say what they will do to him if they see him..... it could just be someone innocent that some girl has fallen out wiht...

irony is.. just about every TP member in this thread is believing the story in some part..

facebook is a dangerous place if someone wants to hurt someone.... I believe nothing I read...i believe no stories.. and anything that contains a pass it on to friends message should be treated like a virus.. if it looks important to me.. then i go confirm it..

too many gullible people about..

This thread is an exact mirror image of the responses on Facebook. :)

We, nor they, have any way of knowing what the guy was doing.

I always laugh (and cringe) when I read all the "If I was there I'd have kicked his head in" comments. Would you? Really Rambo??

Exactly. They're playing along to be included in the 'Drama!"of it all. I just want to slap the guy who posted that crap to begin with. I bet the guy in the pic is just sitting to have a sandwich, and was probably there before the kids.

We're not plastering our thoughts on it over FB are we? We're not merely taking one guy's word and photo for it. And well, we're posting because it was drawn to our attention here. Should we just ignore it then? It is in fact the OPPOSITE of the comments on his page.

I can see it was shared on FB over 1500 times! Multiply that by the average amount that see any FB share ... and this guy probably did NOTHING!

Only camera used here I see is the one used by the person who posted, maybe he's a P****? :O

Not really. There's nobody here screaming to clad their children in loose fitting cardigans and never let them out of the front door again :)

The point is that we live in a society where Jeremy Kyle Law rules and outrage is the new black. Unfortunately togs seem to bear the brunt of of the ignorant majority looking for their outrage-fix. Really, genuinely saddens me.

That's all it is, Drama Llama stuff, but at the expense of some random guy who's probably no more of a threat than that kid, seen in that pic, taken by the guy ... who's alarmed that someone else ... might be taking pics of kids!!

this is a public forum.. anyone can read it.. just like FB

if you believe any part of the story then your doing exactly what they do on... facebook :) YES YOU SHOULD IGNORE SOMEHTING LIKE THIS

Whilst this guy was obviously shifty and up to no good.

We've only got the poster's word for it, all I have deduced from the FB thread is a list of fairly easily 'outraged' drama queens to add to my 'to avoid' list.

Only people interested in photography come here ...

And I doubt anything close to the numbers who have seen that guy's post have seen this thread, not even remotely close. I did mention it's shown to have been shared over 1500 times, right? Multiply that by at least 10 per share.

I don't believe the story, that's why it annoys me! All I see is scare mongering! You reading my posts here at all? Your post makes no sense.

You know I always thought it was the PARENTS job to protect their children....
You know, teach them not to pick thier nose, or stick their tong out at strangers; take sweeties from strange men in macs, that kind of thing....
Oh dear... tell the daily fail! Coppa does his job! Tells parent to look after their kids.... start FB campaign, "How Dare they!"

ACTUALLY... is a rather sad study in sterio-typing.
As a male 'Mum'... take kids to park; I stand out as I am a 'bloke'; There for have no business doing 'womans work'....
To which there is a long, tortiouse back story I really dont want to go into, BUT, following gives hints.....
...... my solicitor was a woman; the judge was a woman; my doctor is a woman....
But while it is utterly uncountenenceable to suggest that women have no business doing such 'Mens Work'..... Men doing jobs traditionally women's occupations, STILL have a hard time, and NO-WHERE is it more abhorent than being a 'House-Wife'....
Daftly there are more of us around than you would imagine... we are just a bit coy about it.... But back on topic.
In the park, summers day, entertaining younger children; sat as they scramble around the climbing frame and swings and stuff....
Used to be little 110 instamatics on wrist-straps or popping out of hand-bags... "Oh look what little Jimmy is doing! Isn't it cute!" Click. "Oh! Oh! Is THAT a camera!" Says woman to her freind... "I think HE'S got a camera!"
Yup. It was. Not a big conspiciouse SLR, just my little pocket compact... "Excuse me, but are YOU taking photo's of the children?"
Yes.
"Why?"
They're my children.
"Where? Where's thier mum? I want to talk to HER so I can check!"
Of course, these-days, its thier smart phones, but same attitude...
MAN! Must be a pervert!
MAN! Must be a rapist
Sad really; but a century of femanism has gone the same Orwellian way as marxixm.....

Maybe the man in the photo is himself a 'p***' spotter. Who knows?

Personally, I am sick to death of unsubstantiated horse **** being posted on Facebook.

I saw this one earlier today and I thought "Where's the proof?"

I still haven't seen any.

All we actually have is a picture of a bloke sat down on some grass and a paragraph of text. Not exactly cast iron proof is it?

Can someone tell me why I should believe it?

I'm still completely baffled how you have worked out he was 'obviously shifty' is it the shirt? the cap? because he's overweight? or is it the 'eyewitness report' from a guy who is clearly a lying scumbag (from actual evidence, there's no way the police told him any of that detail), he's a deluded bullying narrow minded ****.

Whilst you're scared we're all being tarred with the same brush, it'd help if you made sure you're not giving the paranoid idiots a hand holding the tar bucket.

Levity aside it's actually really concerning. Next time you're out anywhere with your camera, any troglodyte with a mobile can snap you and plaster you all over Facebook with any old story accompanying it. I actually think this phenomenon is specific to photography, don't think that happens to any other group either out enjoying their hobby or trying to make a living.

I was swept up in the manic hysteria.....10 lashes for the OP :)
I still think that aside my point still stands.

I think rather than being the ultimate fault of Fakebook....it's just a case of someone being a general b*****d.

I think we're all agreed on that point :)
Worrying to me is the complete lack of accountability for such statuses.

Now my daughter spends a lot if time on you tube and twitter and a couple of entertainers she follows have call the FB fak-e-book so that made me chuckle

Amazingly its not confined to just photography. I was a member of an indoor model flying club who used the local sports hall on an evening once a week. We hired the hall from 20.00 but some of us would meet in the sports hall cafe from about 19.45 for a chat, look at the new models etc. Before us an under 16's judo club used the hall. We were "asked" to change our times as parents had complained about "weird old men" being in the cafe when their children were leaving. A lot of the OAPs in the club were very upset about this and never flew there again and the club folded. We were obviously guilty of "being a little bit different".:bang:

I didn't realise you can steal a child's soul with a model plane. I thought that was confined to cameras...

I agree with you one hundred percent. I hate red tape and flannel, I was just playing safe, but I do agree it is a sad state of affairs when we have to think like that. Soon we will have to have a license to breath in public.

Sad to see so many comments which included threats of extreme violence against the guy. I do not think that they are simply all "hot air" either, and it only needs a couple of these meatheads to put their words into action and an innocent man will end up seriously injured or dead.
