The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I’ve got this wedding coming up this weekend that I mentioned a while back, just informal shots. What would you folk in the know use a minimum shutter speed (thinking indoor in less than favourable light)?

1/125th indoors usually for me.
Oh, one other thing do you bother with facial recognition or do you find it more of a hinderance such as picking out the bride when you're actually wanting to focus on the groom or bridesmaids or something?

Yeah don’t use that deffo more of a hindrance than a help.

Had a borrow of a z9 with the pf 500 Last week to compare to the sony a7iv. Af seems a tad quicker than than the Sony the updated firmware seems to have improved the af . Took a lot of comparison Shots between the Sony 200-600 and the nikon and couldnt see any difference in Sharpness between the two . Which surprised me as i always thought the pf was sharper . I was thinking about swapping to a z8 and the pf 500 but not sure now

Lovely sunny and warm weather here. I've been tied to home today but I could go out this evening. I'll think about it.

Mav, how did the tracking compare? Plus I'd check out the Nikon 400f4.5 (y)

Have you handled the Z8? I really didn't like it, felt very cumbersome in the hand. YMMV.

Is it possible to set a minimum shutter speed so it doesn't drop below this? I know there's min shutter speed standard > fast > faster etc but that sets the shutter speed based on focal length of the lens and not an actual value.

It's part of auto ISO

Thanks, just found it. I didn't realise you could scroll down the left hand side to select shutter speeds I just saw the big with slow, standard, fast etc  That's great, now I know my shutter won't go below 1/125 so I can use A priority without worry (y)

Auto ISO and minimum shutter speed is how I pretty much always shoot unless tripod mounted! (y)

Not for me. Had Tuesday & Wednesday off this week. Went to see the Foo Fighters on Tuesday in Cardiff. Wednesday afternoon felt a bit off & sore throat, same Thursday back in work. Been to a concert, I expect 75,000 people had sore throats so didn't take much notice. High temperature this morning and that old friend Covid has found me.....

Compared to the Sonys it has that feeling, However I held a z6iii last week and it seemed worse than the z6ii with no place for the little pinky to grip.

I was tired of being indoors so I went for an evening trip. Anyone know where I went? :D

Got it yet? A give away...

The grass at the side of the steps up to the vantage point is a bit overgrown and I imagine it'd be a bit treacherous if it's wet.

I thought I'd stop at Saltburn on the way home but I missed the sunset by just a couple of minutes,

I seemed popular today, everyone I passed seemed to want to chat.

New lenses? Maybe including the long rumoured 85mm f1.4 GM II?

We've a few places along your coastline pencilled in if we have a UK honeymoon 'tour' next year :)

There are some lovely places in the North East and along the Yorkshire coast but of them all I think Saltburn is one of the best. It can be easily overlooked but I think it is worth a visit.

I've been having a couple of issue with my A1, is there something obvious or does it need to go in for repair?

Firstly, a few weeks back when I was at the osprey hide I swapped batteries and the camera completely died, wouldn't turn on and just wouldn't do anything. After a couple of minutes of swapping batteries around it decided to work and then it would work with all the batteries I have. Last night at the wedding the same thing happened, but this time no amount of swapping batteries would fix it. After about 15 minutes I decided to go outside as I wondered if it was because the camera was warm (just warm, far from hot). After about 5 minutes of being outside the camrea came back to life. Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

Secondly, the left side (9 o'clock position) of the control wheel feels mushy and no longer has a definite 'click', it still works but just doesn't feel right. Could it be crud trapped behind it, or is it fubar?

Couple of weeks off work snapping away, bit of a mixed bag for me started at Weston park international RC airshow and had a wander around the grounds nice place. Sony A1 - 70-200 gmII

If it's under warranty (I remember you buying it new) then get it checked out under warranty. Can't hurt.

I have had all cameras crash on me. But normally just takes a quick battery swap to turn it back on immediately.

So your case is definitely odd.

Yeah, 3 years warranty. Trouble is I don’t know when I can send it in as I’ve got a number of things imo er the next few months  :$

if its not a serious issue, then I guess you could put up with it..... at the same time faulty camera (if the issue gets worst) and no camera is basically the same thing.

Alternatively you could pick up a backup for the time being while you get A1 fixed. The A9 in sales for example is under a grand and you can sell it on without much loss.
Almost like a free/cheap rental.

I’ve contemplated both options. If it’s a case of it will work again eventually then I’ll stick with it until I’ve got a window to send it in, but obviously I don’t know if it’s a sign of an impending failure. It just seems odd or only does it after swapping batteries

The only time I have seen a Sony body lock up like that is when you pull the battery when its still writing to the card, that's not to say that's what your issue is. For a camera that cost so much I would be sending it in. To be fair though it wouldn't effect me as I have other bodies I can use if one needs to go for service/repair.

Definitely wasn't writing to the card

@woof woof I see Mr Popsys is still trying to convince you away from deep blue skies....... :)

I like blue skies and one reason I do is that I see so few of them as dullness and grey outs are more or less the norm. The Staithes visit was an evening visit as have been my last few trips out as I've been tied to the house during the day so the sky was always going to be pale at best although I did hope to catch the sunset at Satburn but missed it.

More boats. A7 and Sony 40mm f2.5 again.

It sounds like your temp setting could be set to normal, check in the menu, it would explain the 15 minute shutdown, this is on an A7Rv, i thinks its the same on the A1

Thanks, I’ll check that. The question is though why does it only do it when changing the battery, and why does it do it when the camera isn’t hot?

This has got me wondering if it’s the Pergear cards. If the camera can lock up whilst writing could the card cause errors that make the camera think it’s writing or something similar
