The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I have never had any bother with any of mine and a couple of them I have had for about 6-7 years or so.

They work much better than the wipes. Just breath on the lens to cause a little condensation before you use them. They work great!

Must have accessory for me.

Excellent, thanks!

Definitely get a lens pen. Just done a count-up, and there are 3 on the desk, one in the car, and one in each of my camera bags. No idea how I amassed so many, but they do work.

Half a dozen lenspens. Yes, I think you like them :D

I need to spend £20 on Amazon to get free shipping for the £14.99 UES sensor swabs and fluid, so need to add £5.01. Is it worthwhile sticking this £6.99 lenspen in the basket?

Have you thought of one of these? I was recommended it by a guy at SRS Microsystems (I went in with a list of cleaning bits I’d been recommended and he recommended cheaper kit). I also bought a wet cleaning kit but never needed to use it.

I have the sensorklear pen and had mixed results with it, sometimes creating more particles than were there before.

Thanks. I'm not sure whether to buy that or not unless other people recommend it. It does looks like an easy and cheaper solution. But it might be better or safer with swabs, plus snerkler said he had mixed results with the SensorKlear.

Wouldn’t recommend those.

I tend to use Visible dust it’s more expensive but has been great over the years
1 thing to bare in mind, for general dust use the blue top liquid from wex for stains and things that are smudges use RED, red is for grease I found out the hard way on a trip and saw dust on sensor tried to blow it off just after I’d eaten a BLT bacon grease on sensor
Few wipes with red then a smidge of blue all good

I’m aware Amazon are now selling cheaper stuff and it will work I just remember my first time I was sweating so I’m staying with what works, I generally do it on any major trips thus far though not done A1
I’m utilising closed shutter and it’s working however what’s everyone’s view on this I’m just concerned it’s a delicate piece

no pressure what so ever.
a light single swipe in one direction at 45 degrees angle and then another wipe in the opposite direction.
Toss the swab, if your sensor is still not fully clean use another swab.
Not worth trying cheap out with sensor cleaning since any mistake will cost you more than £15 your swabs cost you.
Excellent, thanks!

If your camera has ibis, once its turned off, the sensor moves and flexes while cleaning it. Just be patient and not to worry.

Also hello all. I'm back and will try be more active here and also try get back into photography more.

It's a challenge now not just because of the pandemic, but I've lost my studio space as my dad sold the family house and that's where I had my own actual studio space at the back of the house.

Fully kitted out etc.

Was a sad day when I was there clearing it out and the house.

End of an era.

I currently don't have space in my flat for shoots atm but live close to urban central London so it will mostly be on location shoots I can do.

For sport. I wanna finish off my book on it.

The images are done but I gotta create the layout for the book and where the images go etc.

I do wanna shoot more sports. Different kinds but need to know the right people and actually do it for a bit of £££.

Obviously not expecting to be paid handsomely but any decent amount really will do.

I have read arguments on both sides and they are both logical.
End of day I think it's down to how much risk you are willing to take. A bit like the weatherseal on camera bodies for example.

yes me too ,in the end i went with shutter open .

I went with shutter closed unless I am shooting in particularly windy conditions (eg: on beach or in a desert).
but in such conditions I normally just avoid lens swaps and use my second body.

worst comes to worst I have insurance cover.
I use my cameras in rain and snow too from time to time. I have never had issues. So I feel the shutter is ok to use as cover to some extent as long as you don't abuse it.

It has taken me about 2 decades of wheeling, dealing and appropriating funds to eventually make it to a dream lens. I'll pick a second hand Sony 400mm F2.8 complete with both extenders up on Monday. It will mean selling all my remaining Nikon kit 2xD850s, first AF-s version 400mm F2.8, some tilt shifts and other bits and bobs but at long last I will not yearn after a super tele for a very long time. Just need to work out how I can afford an A1 to bolt on to it so may need to sell either my 200-600 or 100-400 lens. The 200-600 is most likely as the 100-400 is so versatile. So scary spending a good couple of grand more on a lens than I normally do on a car.

Nice, I rarely see the 400mm come up used

I am still waiting to see what the new Sigma 150-600mm sport is like before committing to a longer lens but should a 200-600mm get advertised at a good price I could possibly persuade myself that the Sigma wouldn't be what I wanted anyway :)

It is the second one I have seen since switching to Sony a year or so back. I did ponder an R5 with a Canon 400mm F2.8 ii but this was too good an offer to pass up and it is nearly a kilo lighter than the mk ii Canon. Can't wait to handhold a 400mm F2.8

Does anyone have issues with their a9 or any other models light sensor for the auto viewfinder/monitor switch. Ive been noticing when outside, if I pull the camera away from my eye, it rarely switches to the monitor, which is quite annoying when trying to review an image or change settings. Inside it seems a lot better. I’ve even put a bigger eyepiece on in the hope it would help, but it hasn’t.
Upon close inspection, I’ve noticed a small scratch on the sensor above the eyepiece and wondering if that’s interfering with it somewhat or maybe it’s just not that reliable in the first place. It’s a small annoyance, but as it’s my first Sony and I’m always delving in the menu fiddling and chimping each image it’s quite frustrating.

I believe it's quite a common issue on many models. Sometimes cleaning the eyepiece sensor can help, or shading it.

People have had issues inc. me with A7C but not as bad as you have. It's a minor annoyance at best than a what you are experiencing which seems to be a real problem.
It should in fact be fixed by one of the many firmware updates I believe.
As suggest above try cleaning the sensor and see if that make a difference. Also try taping over part of the sensor with a black tape and see if that help (that almost fixes it for everyone). A deeper eyepiece fixed the issue for me on A7C thanks to @Stephen L

Not had that with any of my Sony bodies, its well known though if you don't keep the eye sensor clean you can get issues like this. Even a small amount of dust on it can cause issues. I give my E.V.F and eye level sensor a quick go over with a rocket blower and when needed a quick clean with a lens pen before every use. If the sensor is scratched that will definitely cause problems.

Got a lowepro flipside 300 bag from sales, quite a decent bag and it can fit a fair amount of kit
A1+200-600mm
A7C+28-200mm
20G and 85DN
Plus filters the in flap zipper.
Need to test it's comfort....

Anybody tried the Sigma 14-24mm, preferably on an A9?
Tried two copies both decentered and googling showed more such reports so I am not the only one. At that point I just gave up.

If you get a good copy of the lens it's amazingly sharp through out it's range.

It's rather hefty and fairly large to carry too in the bag because of the fixed hood. Also means no filter thread. In use it balances on the camera fairly well and it's compact for what it is.

Strangely enough I’ve been out in the woods for an hour or so and it was fine. Seems to be just outside in open areas with direct light. I have cleaned the sensor as much as I can.
Im reluctant to send the camera back as I got it pretty cheap and there aren’t any on eBay or elsewhere in the same price range to replace it with, so I might just have to put up with it.

It's certainly just direct (bright) light which affects mine. I make a point of shading the eyepiece when I move it away from my eye.

I’ve used both and not had a noticeable issue with either

Welcome back, I wondered where you’d gone. Sorry to hear about the studio. I keep wondering if I should try and push it to make a bit of cash from my photography to pay for my GAS but I never seem to have the motivation.

Nice, hope it’s as good as you’re expecting. Would love one of these, minus the weight and cost of course

Is that the 400AW? If so do you mind me asking how much you paid as I have one lying about doing nothing?

When I got the A9 the first thing I did was assign a button to switch between the EVF and screen and then turn off the auto sensor. Same with my Canon M5.
I will probably do that once I've fully got to grips with it, but for now it would be nice for it to work as it should.

Arseholes. Paid £1369 last week!

Just back from the Peak District yesterday. I like this shot and it was our longest hike of the day clocking up 22km. My 6 year old did great and raised a couple of hundred quid for charity for the hiking she did throughout the week.
