The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Just thought of something against the Sigma 35mm f2 for video, I saw a video review and it had epic focus breathing.

Ok, I'm gonna ask, what's the deal with this Voigtlander 35mm f1.4?

Aye, I saw that in the written review earlier. Although, I'm probably not going to do any cinematic focus pulling so will it affect me?

2 more days until we see proper reviews of the A1.

i have no doubt it will get good reviews but before i even entertain the idea of droppiing 6.5k on a piece of kit i wont use much due to the pandemic, it better be f*****g stella i tell ya.

Maybe i should realistically just wait until next year to buy it or later.

should hopefully go down to 5k

I use the a9mkII and can't see it been a Lot better but when you factor in the 50mp ( for birding ) that will be a Lot better but even if the rest is say 15% overall then that is what you are paying for .

I don't need 30fps or 8k video or wifi transfer either but i do want the rest of it :)

It's small and light and very well built and it's much better than the M mount version. It's sharp enough from wide open anywhere you'd place a main subject but the extreme corners are always a bit mushy, they do improve upon stopping down but are never really sharp like with something like the Sony 35mm f1.8. Other than that the bokeh can be wild with a complex background like foliage but with a less messy background it can be perfectly ok. It doesn't seem to be overly affected by flare, I leave the lens hood at home, or vignetting. Some reviewers say it's not at its best at minimum focus distance but I find it ok. I often carry a close focus filter and these improve performance as you can focus closely but without the lens set to minimum focus distance. It's one of my favourite lenses.

I must have posted a ton of pictures taken with this lens plus there's a thread here...

Another here...

I’m contemplating going the other way, ie high mp R4 to lower mp A9-II, I could always get a 1.4TC if I find that I’m struggling for reach. I’m getting frustrated not being able to get many keepers of my dog, and I get frustrated with how slow my computer runs with 61mp files in LR.

I would just hate to get the A9 and still struggle to get a decent hit rate of Betty running and that it might be due to her having a black face and light body that’s throwing the camera off, and whether I’d miss the MP. The A1 is not on the radar due to price.

I did have the r4 but kept reading about how the a9mkII was so much better at AF so bought one and tested both together in the garden and every time the a9mkII won and i did allow for a higher shutter speed with the r4 yes the MPs took a hit but what is the point of having 60MPs that often are soft .
I soon sold the r4 .

I like it. :agree:

Buffer clear speed and extra Res are big plus for me

Have you tried the A9-II with high speed subjects coming straight at the camera, if so what’s your thoughts?

The other thing that I’ve noticed is that I can sometimes struggle to keep the AF point in the exact same spot when panning due to the blackout and feel the A9-II would help with this. What is the frame rate on the A9-II at Hi+, Hi, Med, and Low and do you still get blackout free shooting and negligible rolling shutter no matter what the frame rate (assuming electronic shutter)?

I like a R3/4 for the MP in landscapes when i can travel again. I would be my travel camera. I think the AF will be adequate enough for what I need it for.
They do make for great travel and landscape cameras for sure, but unfortunately I can’t afford two bodies so I have to sacrifice somewhere.

Sound like it may be a cheaper option to change the dog  :exit:

My a9 tracks everything.

Easy easy

Anyone got any experience with the Sigma 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS?

Looking to buy a new lens and seems to have some decent reviews.

Cheers

I've had one since release and think it's a great lens giving a decent range without being too hefty, I'm pleased with the IQ and it's obviously a good bit cheaper than the Sony 100-400mm I'd originally been considering. I do sometimes want longer than 400mm but for my general use it works well, I bought a 150-600mm for my Nikon and just never used it because it was just too hefty for me.

This pidion was coming at a fair rate and head on 200/600 and many tests have been just as good ,i only ever use 20fps and no black out or rolling shutter you would have to google for the other rates as i don't know

on 20fps i can just take 3 shots so have fps control that way .

If anything, this thread has taught me never to get a dog, otherwise I would be spending thousands in gear just to get a clear photo of them running! towards me. :runaway:

Everyone has their own way of testing, dpreview for example test with man on a cycle.

Yup seems a bit crazy to me. How did people get these shots with those old clunky DSLRs with 8 focus points.

Out of interest, what is the A7R3`s AF like in comparison with the A7R4 in terms of tracking subjects running towards the camera ?

Would a A7R3 not be a valid compromise and not so much of a step down from an R4 in terms of MP

At the rumor site...

That was yesterday. Keep up. More lenses are always welcome.

It lack the real time tracking for humans but tbh A7R3 is nearly just as good at subject tracking otherwise. A7RIV also has a slightly better frame coverage compared to A7R3 but I never found that to be a problem on the R3

the increase in MP is noticeable between A7R3 and A7R4. But at the same time I'd still class A7R3 as a high res body, its no slouch in this department.

I've got an 85mm f1.8 too.
Great lens for the money, but the 24-105mm is my most used lens as it covers so many options.

I think this is probably the best one to start with as it provides the most flexibility and the OSS is going to be essential for video as I have no gimbal and Sony IBIS seems to be pretty poor. Can't believe how high used prices are for the lenses I've been looking at so just going to go new. I think there's £100 cash back which makes used prices even worse! lol

you missed out on the 10% off offer that was running last week at Wilkinson cameras on top of the cash back.

I think I got my A7 in autumn 2013. This was taken 17th July 2014 at 21:15, I think with a Minolta Rokkor 50mm f1.4.

She's writing a piece for school at the moment about her experiences since moving to the UK and one of the things she's writing about are the differences in the seasons and that it's still light at 22:00 in the summer. She might use this picture as I can't find the one she asked for.

I've had my Kodak Instamatic for 50 years, I also have a Jessops Quickshot I've had for decades and I had a Nikon SLR for decades but I don't have that any more as I gave it away. In these digital times I have a Medion compact I've had for over 15 years and I have a Canon compact I've had for a long time too but not as long as the Medion. Amongst DSLR's I kept my Canon 20D the longest, for over 7 years. So, I've had my A7 about as long as I had my 20D but not as long as I've had my Medion :D

I noticed WEX doing that as well, but when I called they said you have to buy a body as well. Not to worry, I've bought it regardless. The A9 just arrived, it's more solid than I was expecting.

Any recommendations for the best UHS-2 card to get? (bottom slot I think for this?)

That's a really good photo, Alan. Best of yours I've seen I think. Nicely processed. (y)

I usually don't really like over processing pictures, I usually like a more natural look but with this one I had to selectively increase the exposure of Mrs WW then selectively apply some NR. Other than that it's pretty straight.

Haha, it's not the only reason for contemplating the switch, but this has been my go to test at the moment as it's all I can do (y)
A1 does it all!
At a price  But then it wouldn't fix my slow LR, I'd need to fork out £4k to change the camera and then another £4k in a new computer

Those shots are easy ;)

I've tried to find some like that but was unsuccessful but I'll take a look at DPR.

TBH I had more success with the D750 (y)

Unfortunately the old body style isn't great for me.

I just got an A9 delivered today as I am in a similar position shooting with the A7R iv and trying to get dog shots. I had much more success on my last outing and the two things I changed were switching on electronic front shutter and making sure my files were RAW compressed. I am probably also getting used to the change in camera which will also help. I used flexible spot and it was doing around the same as my D850 which I ran alongside for comparison. The weather was lovely though so that extra light may have something to do with it. The weather may put paid to any test of the A9 today but even playing in the house the A9 is very quick to focus although the ergonomics are noticeably worse than the A7R IV particularly the size and position of the AF On button.

I'm happy to stick a few images up on Dropbox or similar if you want to take a look at the types of successes and failures I am having if that helps. My dog is a pretty athletic black lab and goes at a fair clip when running so not the easiest of challenges for photographer or camera.

Here is one from the other day. Let me know if I can help in terms of the types of shots you are struggling with and I could have a go and compare notes
