The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I just press the little silver button and a picture magically appears (sometimes). :D

As it's quiet... some things that caught my eye, A7 and Voigtlander 35mm f1.4...

Me, rock, boats and windfarm. What caught my eye was that the ripples made it look like the rock had just been thrown into this little pond by a 15 foot tall giant, of which 12 ft was legs.

I always like to see the patterns in the sand and sea coal.

To me this looked like a little water or lava fall of seaweed.

This could be the best woodlands photo I've seen from you. Really good, bags of atmosphere. Could be straight out of a Spielberg movie. All that's missing is a T-Rex. Was one not nearby when you took the shot? :)

Thank you Lee. This last months images are certainly making me/us re-think what we are hanging on the wall

The only ET thing there was ME! :ROFLMAO:

The Sigma 35mm f2 is looking like it's going to be good.

Think it might replace my Zony 35 f2.8.

I've been following this on Fred Miranda...

I can't see myself selling my Sony 35mm f2.8 as it gives such a compact combination but the Sigma 35mm f2 could replace my Sony 35mm f1.8. I do also fancy the 65mm as it could replace both my Sony 55 and 85mm f1.8's as I only use either once in a blue moon as the 55mm has largely been replaced with 35mm and the 85mm seems just too tight for me. I even like the look of the 24mm.

On page 39 they're whinging about Sony not having an auto option to switch between mechanical and electronic shutter. This does seem to be a failing. My Panasonic cameras have an auto option and switch seamlessly between the two. It's one of the things that puts me off the A7c.

But as I have found I'm spending 99% of the time using the full electronic shutter, and it's mapped to a custom button so only a press away.

I have been using the samyang 45mm f1.8 and have really liked it with the A7C. it weighs only 160g and not much larger than the zeiss 35mm/2.8. I can recommend replacing both your 35 and 50 with just one lens.

though that sigma 35mm f2 looks like thing of beauty. its designed very nicely and I am sucker for nice looking gadgets....

Am I right in saying it's not one button press away? AFAIK you have to call up the shutter option and then select the one you want. That may be only two or three presses or one if I'm wrong but still not as good as the camera automatically switching for you.

The reason this puts me off is that the max mechanical shutter speed of the A7c is AFAIK 1/4,000 and I've promised myself I'll never buy another camera limited to 1/4,000 as it creates problems when using wide aperture lenses in good light when faster than 1/4,000 may be needed. The electronic shutter fixes that issue but creates others including possible rolling shutter effects and the possibility of banding under artificial lights. I do keep looking at the A7c but the compromises and work arounds seem to kill it for me and this is one of the ones towards the top of the list as I'd have to remember to manually select electronic shutter or mechanical to suit. That's no biggie for many people but when there are other cameras that don't require me to remember to change the shutter on top of the other little foibles it probably all adds up to kill for the A7c for me. Actually this shutter issue is probably the biggest issue for me.

Euston station a few days ago. Almost dismissed this photo but played with the lighting and I quite like the lines and shadows and a sense of mystery.
Couldn't call it Stairway to Heaven. Maybe Stairway to Seven (Sisters Road)

Not Sony related...

On DPR they're reporting that Nikon is moving camera production to Thailand....

Mrs WW worked for a Japanese company and the tales she tells of how that particular company behave are toe curling. I hope Nikon are better employers and better respecters of the law in the host country.

I'd never replace my 35 with anything longer.
It's my most used lens I just wish it was faster for night time shots. Love the idea of the sigma f1.2 but it's far too big.

I still have the occasional thoughts about something AF in the 35-45mm range but not fully convinced or committed to anything yet.

If I'm by myself I'll probably pick a manual lens but when with others or for people pictures my choice is AF as it cuts down on saying things like "That's great, hold on a mo" and makes me less the geek with the camera holding things up.

I'm still thinking about the Sigma 35mm f2 but reading that it has more ca than the Sony f1.8 puts me off, but then again it looks to be built lovely. I'll wait for Fred Miranda to get a copy and review it.

I keep debating picking up the Sammy 35 f1.8, knowing I don't 'need' it, but fancying anyway.

Get thee behind me GAS. ;)

My issue is more than I'll have both a 40mm & 35mm-ish lens in the bag & I'll be swapping to & fro & by the time I've swapped lenses I may aswell have just MF'd & fired of a few images :ROFLMAO: Obviously the great advantage is if someone else is using the camera.....

The answer could well be the Sigma 35mm f2 as it will have some of the feel of a manual lens as it's metal and has an aperture ring. I don't suppose the focus ring will have the same feel but maybe the whole experience will be close enough to a nicely built manual lens to make it liveable. Plus, for getting the picture quickly and so not annoying people AF for general stuff and AF and face detect for people pictures are lovely things.

These new-fangled Sigmas, with aperture rings like Fujis, sound ideal for use with the A7C.

Yup but may be worth keeping in mind they're metal bodied and will probably be heavier than similarly sized plastic bodied lenses.

Of course some other AF lenses have aperture rings too. I have just the one, the Sony 20mm f1.8 for example.

It would definitely depend on the rendering & feel of the manual focus. I've so far not been a fan of focus-by-wire.

On the subject of aperture control, on my A7C I have mapped the C button to alternately swap between standard behaviour and putting shutter speed onto the control dial and ISO to the wheel, for use on manual lenses with an aperture ring. Works fine, except that if I power the camera off and on (as I generally do between shots) it reverts to standard. I would like it to keep its previous setting. Am I doing something wrong?

Why not map the settings to a Mode number, say 1 for manual lenses.

I never use them as I mostly use the same settings all the time only changing the odd thing from time to time.

It’s a thought. This is normally the only setting I change apart from the usual suspects, and then only for one, or at most, two lenses.

Golly Gosh!!!

I'll be 60 next year and I've just received a pension estimate from a previous employer... and... WoWza! I was not expecting this! Even the cash payout and reduced pension option looks good and the pension more in line with what I expected although to be honest I don't need a cash payout and don't want the hassle of looking for investments or alternative pension providers so I'll probably just stick to the beyond what I expected (thank you) basic pension they're offering.

What a nice surprise. I might order something in the morning, just to celebrate :D

What a sensible idea.

How many custom setting do you get on the A7c and A7III? My A7 has two, which I have set for aperture and manual both with wide area and face detect.
