The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

It always amazes me when people pay much more for a Leica that's really just a Panasonic.

you've always seemed to have a dislike for Leica and seem to think people just like them for the red badge bragging rights. ive never owned one, but having had a play with a few they do seem really nice. certainly beats the experience of using an A7.

aren't those kinda the opposite. if one does the well the other dies :D
Yeah but like most people, I thought I had bought at a good (low) price.... then the Oil war began between Saudi and Russia and COVID-19 crisis has just caused a epic bloodbath on the markets..... we are now in unprecedented times

A7 are seriously better to hold than a lot of the leicas with no grip and slippery bodies.

I have some Leica stuff that I inherited have never actually got around to using any of it, it's been sitting in the cupboard under the stairs for about a year or so. :$

Must get around to flogging it.

and
Naaa its only the lower-end point and shoot bodies which seem to have more Panasonic in them.
The Lecia Q2 is a beast and feels nothing like a Panasonic.

I know but some Leicas are maybe more deserving of a heritage tag than others.

I posted in response to the comment about heritage. I can see the appeal in heritage and badges and image but they're not really things I buy into too much. I do think that some buy into it too much, like the people who lust after a Leica and buy a rebadged Panasonic at twice the price. Yes, each to their own but in this instance, rebadged cameras with pretty much zero Leica DNA, it's not really warranted. IMO :D

Yeah mmmm I feel that same about my Fuji X100V, the experience is different compared to my Sony A9 .... I am now shooting at 1 fps at slug pace instead of Jedi lightening 20 fps lol.

there isn't a panasonic version of most leicas tbh.

But they have done rebadge jobs, a few of them. You do know that.

It's the buying into the mystique and buying almost blindly that I don't get.

Yeah .... lol :D

I was holding my then house deposit in cash in 1987, someone in my office suggested that I invested it in th eintial BP share flotation, with a view to cashing out hours later, as all public offerings at the time were giving huge investor returns (BT, British Gas, etc), I even went as far as getting all the forms (paper not online in those days). I didn't go ahead and pleased I didn't as Black Monday 1987 happened, and I would have caught a large cold!

Not true on every count I'm afraid :D

I don't dislike Leicas at all. I've said many times and it's true, I really don't see why I should care what make the kit is. I'd like to buy British and if Leica was British I might be tempted as it might keep jobs in the UK and keep the economy ticking over and the tax rolling in to keep the NHS and all the rest going but as they aren't and none of this kit is I can't really see why I should care if the gear is Leica nominally made in Germany or Japan or Sony made in Thailand as buying either mean precious little difference to jobs in the UK, tax or the NHS.

I can see the appeal of the Leica RF's but having said that when I had RF's I didn't have a Leica. The appeal for Leica for me is in having a well made camera that handles well and I wouldn't care where it was made or if it was a Leica or a Cosina. I've no doubt that Leicas are that, well made and nice to use, especially the RF's and the RF style modern digitals. I'm sure they're lovely things but I've done my time with RF's and their limitations aren't for me now and even though I like using MF lenses I don't want a fully manual camera any more.

Ditto the lenses. I'm sure they're very well made and lovely to use but for me the e mount Voigtlanders are a better fit because they too are well made and nice to use but they're also cheaper and crucially built to be used on the A7 series.

The only "dislike" I have for anything Leica is the thought that people will buy Leicas because they're Leicas.

It's a very risky business if I am being honest..... I am a complete beginner, however I really do think Tesla is a good long-term investment, however BP PLC was a punt hoping they would go back up eventually .... with COVID-19 added to the mix, I think we may not see positive gains for a very long time. :o

they and those also hold their value a lot better than panasonic ones.

But if you can afford two Panasonics for the price of one Leica which will last the longest? A Panasonic rebadged as a Leica or two Panasonics?

This is the aspect of badge buying that I don't get. If you can get essentially the same thing with a different badge on it for less and you choose the more expensive option then that's fine as long as you know that it's the badge you're paying for.

And before someone says again that not all Leicas are rebadge Panasonics, they're lovely to use or I hate Leicas…. All opinions and views expressed by me are mine and not yours :D

In the end I started using Unit Trusts as it spread the risk, I did quite well with the M+G Recovery Fund and M+G Smaller Companies Fund (I paid monthly into these, and that way it spread the risk further as when the market was down I effectively bought more shares) but after multiple divorces I'm lucky to even have a roof over my head......

I've been to financial advisors several times and usually they've lost me money. These days I'm a fan of DIY and in the last 10 years although I may not have made a lot at least I've never lost money.

Are there any good investments these days? I'd always caution people by suggesting they should only invest what they're prepared to lose or at best get back with no increase.

I'm sure you know that lots of older cameras where basically Leica shaped, just a sort of oblong box with rounded off corners. These days there's a lot of chat about handling and whilst I do think some is maybe OTT some of the time these days we maybe have larger lenses and more buttons and these things can make a difference and make handling more of a problem.

Actually you've probably done quite well with vintage glass (y) (and thats a compliment not a dig :))

I have thought about selling and if I sold the lot I might make a profit but I don't need a few hundred quid. Even if it's into the low £k's in money brought in (rather than profit) that's not going to make any difference to my life so why bother? Even though I don't use anything much now it's really not worth selling as it's there to use when I do get time and when I don't it's not as if it needs walking or feeding. And if I changed my mind and tried to rebuy some lenses good ones are getting harder to find at anything like reasonable money. Back when I sold my Canon kit I sold a couple of lenses for more than I paid for them new which was just luck.

Just a couple of AF Sony lenses and a couple of manual lenses for fun would really easily be more than enough for me and I can understand why some here have sold off expensive kit and slimmed down but as I don't need the money (and that's not any sort of brag just an objective evaluation) why go through the time and hassle.

Good photo's you'll soon pass 1500 photo's taken on your Sony A9 ;)
Do you really need more lenses having only taken 1500 photos with what you have got? :o

I have been out to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park plenty of times..... I think the FE 70-200mm f4 would be suitable, had the FE 70-200mm f2.8 and the weight it big.
It's a big investment so be sure you actually need it, you could always just hire one for the 1 - 2 trips a year etc.

Best investments are stainless steel sport model Rolex watches if you have someone that can hook you up.

I'd probably wait for the tamron 70-180mm or the rumoured sigma 70-200mm

I know someone but don't really like it tbh as an investment. The guy I know seems make a living and a half easily with luxury old watches.

Did well in gold. 33% in three years.

Tried a samyang 18mm lens just now. It was decentred.
The lens I really want is the new Sony 20mm f1.8. think I'll just wait, I can't be arsed with samyang QC.

why not just keep the 24mm? The 20mm is good but not as good as the 24.

hmmm.... well I always wanted a 20mm/1.8 and a 35mm/1.8 both of which Sony didn't do until recently. So I bought the 24GM as a workaround and ended up liking it a lot!

Not I have 35mm-55mm-85mm-135mm all f1.8. the 24GM is the only f1.4, the OCD in me really wants a f1.8 lol.
