The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I'm looking forward to how this new Canon performs ( not that I would go back ) then Sony can blow it out the water with a A9 MKIII with 40 + mb .
I doubt any camera can better the a9mkII af how can you beat Instant AF - apart from the Olympus pro capture feature, more cameras should have this .
either way its a good time for photography my interest is mostly birds and the a9mkII (iv only had it a few weeks ) is way more accurate than any other camera iv used .
Rob.

Yep, the Sony A9 II is a smashing camera, the original A9 isnt bad either.
I was close to selling mine (again) but there's nothing out there which really competes...... take the shot below for example.... low-ish light using Eye-AF from the side... worked a treat.

Anyone got a Samyang FE lens station that they don't need anymore ? If so I've got a wanted in the classifieds :)

ISO 1000 at 1/125 is low light?

That's a very clear and very sunny day in Middlesbrough :D

Just a quick note on the Voigtlander 50mm f2.

Someone on FM said something to the effect that the files need very little if any processing and I thought that was a bit of an odd thing to say but after looking at the files I can see what he's getting at as the lens gives lovely contrast, colour and clarity.

Oh and a PS.
Just in case anyone doesn't know it has a rounded aperture at f2 and f2.8. That's a nice trick and I can't think of any other lens that has this sort of arrangement.

Haha it was for me..... :D For the camera perhaps not.
Going to stick with the best....... Sony :D
Just in the process of buying a iPad Pro for my post-processing needs ;) lol

I hope you can settle Riz. Are you keeping your f1.8's?

I've been sort of hedging my bets and had held off investing too much into Sony kit in case I decide to change but I now have the 28-70mm, 35, 55 and 85mm f1.8's plus the Voigtlander 35mm f1.4, 40mm f1.2 and 50mm f2 plus 3 Novoflex adapters so I now have quite an investment in the Sony A7 universe.

I keep thinking about selling my MFT gear but it's just so small and nice and blisteringly fast and the 9-18mm, 45-150mm and 100-400mm MFT lenses give me options I don't have and probably never will have for a FF system. I may eventually get a 18 or 20mm prime and I may get a wide zoom but I can't see myself ever getting a long zoom for a FF system.

Yup I am keeping the FE 35, 55 and 85m f1.8 primes lenses as they offer the best combination when it comes to size, cost, and weight. :)
What I would like is Sony to bring out is a Sony version of a FE 24mm f1.8 to match my set. On the long-end I can't see myself needing a tele-photo unless we go on Safari or something worth hiring or buying it for.

Going to continue down the path of using my setup as much as possible, post-process lightly and print out on my Selphy. Got to get the family album populated :D
Got my Selphy print kits delivered today, 216 prints in total..... :D

Good idea. But just spring for the 24 GM

It's too much money for what I would use it for, something like the Sony 1.8 primes in terms of cost and optics would be great. :)
It's not a must right now, I have 3 decent lenses to get on with it and get back into the swing of things.

For anyone who doesn't want to click on the link... It's about a journey on which you can spend an awful lot of time and money on camera bodies and lenses and eventually end up with a FF camera and just two lenses, a 35 f1.8 (well, ok the article says f2) and a 85mm f1.8. And of course you can if you like skip the journey and just buy that kit on day 1 :D

I've got the kit 28-70 Sony and the 50mm f1.8 Sony AF but find myself more often using my old manual focus Pentax 28mm f1.8 and Cosina 35-70 plastic zoom from a Cosina C3 film camera from Freecycle.

Mind you I'd like a 16-35 AF lens at some point

It may be madness but maybe we all recognise ourselves there, just a little bit :D

I think the kit lens is very nice but I prefer a 35 or 50mm. I think that last time I took the kit lens out was when I mounted it on the camera by accident thinking it was my 85mm f1.8. I only noticed when I went to take a picture and couldn't open it up to f1.8, I looked at the lens and realised it had an extra ring and was in fact the kit zoom. I do keep meaning to use it.

Let me guess: it's a high-MP sensor camera so that he can crop way in to make up for the lack of zoom?

That said, having a fixed-focal-length should impose some compositional discipline on a lazy photographer (like me!)

Not quite.

It's a made up letter from George asking what camera he should buy with a budget of $400. The blogger suggests he buy a FF camera and 35 and 85mm lenses costing $3k+ and George thinks this is ridiculous as it's way over budget and the lenses don't even zoom. The blogger then describes the 25 steps we normally go through... buying a compact... buying APS-C / FF DSLR's and lenses etc... and over 3-5 years spending nearly $10k before ending up with the FF camera and two basic primes. Starting with that set up would save 3-5 years and over $6k, so says the blogger.

After reading on here about how well people are doing with the A9 for their bird photography I've decided to rationalise my kit and sell off stuff that I'm not using. I shall be moving on my A7RIII (which of course I do use), A7II and Sigma 135mm 1.8 ART and part exchange them for one of the many A9's on MPB and Wex.
I may put them up on here but I just can't seem to sell stuff in Classifieds, might put them in Price Checks though. Any ideas here would be most welcome. Now I'll have to sell the project to my wife:eek:

I’ve just done something similar myself. I’d decided the 70-200 f4 wasn’t being used so I sold it. Selling my A7Riii and putting the 70-200 money covered the vast majority of the cost of an A9. I’m now down to just the A9, 24-105 and 100-400. I’m thinking less is more. I’m getting to a point in photography where you don’t need multiple lenses just because you may need it at some point. It feels nice having a limited amount of very good kit that I use. I’m happy carrying it around too. I’d gotten to a point where carrying heavy kit was becoming tiresome and took the fun away from photography.

Price the stuff correctly and it should go, not guaranteed as it can be slow at times, otherwise wait fro Ebay £1 listings, usually happens every 2 weeks these days and they'll go quickly.

How you finding the A9 over the R, was it worthwhile us badgering you? I see you still need the 1.4x tc :D

Less is definitely more for the majority of us.

Not @Riz_Guru he proves it time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time...

The a9 is said to very much like the a9mkII and that is quite an amazing camera it by far gives me consistently sharp shots even with a 1.4 tc on along with the 200/600 for a relatively low cost setup i doubt for birds it can be beaten .

That's pretty much like what I'll be left with except I'll have the 24-70GM. I've realised that's all I need.

I’ve not had a chance to get out with it yet as work and dark night have got in the way. I’m hoping to get out this weekend to give it a run out. I’ve tried setting it up but I’m unsure of what I really want from the custom buttons as the A9 has some dedicated buttons for some of the bits I previously used.

I’m going to give the teleconverters a miss. The 1.4x would take me up to f8 which is too limiting for me. F5.6 is as far as I’d go as I often like to shoot wide open to get a smooth background, get a fast shutter speed and lower ISO. I gather the A9 is pretty good at high ISO.

It’s definitely freeing as I’m now using the smallest backpack I have for years. My f stop guru 25 litre bag is now my go to bag. It’s weird to think I used to use bags that were huge and sometimes cart around 12kg of kit.
