The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Hey Guys, Question.

Funds can’t stretch to the a7r3 at the moment. Is the a7r2 still good enough to pair along side my a73?

basically the same sensor. The new processor in A7R3 gives it a slight IQ boost not worth worrying about and a fair amount of AF boost worth worrying about if care for AF.
other benefits of A7R3 is that it has a larger battery and shares the same battery with your A7III, so saves on having to maintain yet another set of batteries.
Also A7R3 has a better nicer EVF.

On another line... I haven't had time for hobbies in the last few weeks and maybe as a part of that I've been thinking about the gear I have or want. I've been reading about the Voigtlander 50mm f2 which is arguably one of the best 50mm lenses ever made and I've soooo nearly ordered one but do I/we need all this excellentness when few people really need the last few pixels in the corner to be sharp at fx when pixel peeping at 100%+

I've never really gone for the very latest and the technically very best but even more than ever I'm thinking that 90% of this is GAS.

:D

This one? https://phillipreeve.net/blog/review-voigtlander-50mm-f2-apo-lanthar/

Looks great - let us know how it goes. I don't think I'll ever invest so much in a prime (as I don't earn money from my camera gear, and don't have a specialism that merits a fixed focal length), so I'd love to see what you can do with it.

Haven't you bought that yet? ;)

Seeing as you love the 35mm so much...... Can you not sell the 40/1.2 off for the 50/2? Or even the 50/1.2? ;)

very lovely indeed! Labs are great I must say.
We previously had a German Shepard.

Might look for a lab in the future :)

We had quit a few dogs when I was younger, it was a bit weird when we stopped having more as we moved homes. We had German Shepherd, Border Collie, Rottweiler, Doberman, Staffie and some mixed breeds.

Labs are great, ours has just hit 14 and has slowed down a lot and we are trying our best to enjoy having him with his while we still can.

We have had lots of different dog breeds at the moment we have our lab, a Japanese Akita, a Parsons Jack Russell and a miniature Irish Jack Russell.

Over the years though we have had Boxers, German Shepard's, Rottweilers, Pits, Dobermans and a few others.

While we loved them all to bits the lab has been special, so easy to train and very good nature.

It's YouTube, it's the internet, what did you expect?

You care enough to get upset about it to swear.

He really got to you didn't he?

I maybe gave the wrong impression. I don't give a flying except mild annoyance when someone lets fanboyism or in his case employs clickbait and controversy to generate traffic rather than just being objective and honest.

Here it is on another site...

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1625777/19

Maybe it's just because I'm busy, stressed, depressed and all the rest but although I sort of want one I also don't see any real point in getting one. Really any differences in optical quality between that and the V 40mm f1.2 or Sony 55mm f1.8 or really any of my other 40/50mm lenses are only going to be visible at f2 to f5.6 when looking very closely and although we probably all pixel peep and like using nice kit I try to remember that I don't need excellent extreme corners at f2 and a small amount of ca isn't going to upset me too much. In fact some of my optically worst lenses are the ones I find the most interesting because of the look they give including when stopped down. I think that stopped down look is often overlooked.

A guy on FM posted that Voigtlander, and I'm paraphrasing, shouldn't have bothered with the 35mm f1.4 classic as it's pants and no one wants one. I disagree. It's never excellent into the extreme corners and the bokeh is bordering on extreme at f1.4/1.8 with some scenes but other than that it's really a three in one lens, it's sharp enough at any aperture anywhere you'd want to put a main subject, stopped down it's sharp across the frame and the fall off is IMO capable of being really nice, just like the 40mm f1.2 although that lens is quite decent at f1.x. I think the V 35mm f1.4 is an excellent lens if you know what it's capable of and what it isn't.

So lovely though the possibly best 50mm lens ever made may be I might not bother with it.

PS.
I don't and never would earn any money from this. As per my profile I take pictures of things I find interesting and places and people I love. That's it.

That looks to be a cracking lens Anthony.

Got me thinking whether I should wait for the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 or go with this one.

Yeah, I'm quite pleased with it. I generally use prime lenses, but the versatile nature of a zoom will definitely come in handy. It's sharp, but not as sharp as my 85mm & 200mm primes wide open, I guess that's the slight trade off for a zoom lens.

Happy New Year guys and gals (y)

Happy new year to you all

Happy new year lads.

Although not so happy start to the year for me, I am definitely not built for serious drinking any more....:puke:

Should still be in bed really but so much to do. :$

Happy New year all.

What's your prediction for Sony?

A7s 3 will come out and I think a 500mm f4

Would imagine the A7SIII and A7IV will both hit at some point this year.

Rumour site says their is a wide angle GM prime coming early this year as well.

A7IV could be interesting, especially if they add the new grip and better EVF.

The new grip is a given really as it is cheaper for them to use the same body style for all the new models. I don't find the new one to be that much different than the old one though, but I never had any issues with handling.

My guess would be the new grip, the evf from the A7RIII, real time tracking, ability to change the colour of the focus point and maybe dual UHSII card slots. Incremental upgrades like the other newer camera's rather then anything really new and exciting.

For anyone with an A7III they are probably better holding off for an A7V for a real upgrade.

oh noes sony have become canikon with incremental updates!!

tbh that sensor is still the best one as far as IQ goes. I see no reason why they'll update it.

At least Sony don't release incremental updates once every 10 years like canon. More like every 2 to 2 years ;)

I think the a7r4 had the biggest upgrade as it has a new sensor

A7RII->A7RIII used the same sensor.

By the looks of it they either upgrade the processor or the sensor on each update but not both. So will be interesting to see what they update on A7IV.

Yeah, they dont need to do much more, possibly not even dual UHSII, keeping it as a feature for the upper models.
