The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

In my search for an all in one lens for hiking, my 24-105 f4 arrived today and I have to say that coming from a Tamron 28-75 it's a real pleasure to use. I know it has no bearing on the final image but the zoom and focus rings make the Tamron feel like a toy. Now it's just a matter of using them side by side for a bit before deciding if I want to keep the Tamron for those times the extra stop is needed.
 
That very odd isn’t it. I though I was going loopy but glad we cleared it lol.

Animal eye and hum eye works in every mode

Oh dear pretty sure it be sorted in a FW update. Unless it due to the double stack sensor ??

no idea could well be the stacked sensor tech and A7RIV not have enough processor power (uses the same processor in A7RIII).
Its not a biggie but would have been nice to have it though.
 
A9 goodness and it amazing how Sony improved it with FW :sony:
 
So after again much thought... I have decided to stick with my Sony A9 but sell off the expensive lenses.
So probably going for the following setup.

Sony A9
Sony Zeiss 55mm f1.8
Sony 85mm f1.8
Tamron 28-75mm f2.8

I should get a big wad of cash for savings / holidays etc from the sale off my GM lenses :)

I am avoiding the 35mm focal length as may look at a Fuji X100V next year.
Going to probably stick with the Zeiss 55mm f1.8 and Sony 85mm f1.8 for now and off-load the rest.
Manged to get the 85mm f1.8 for £375 from e-infinity.
Once I have started offloading my big GM lenses I will possible look at the Tamron zoom......

I'm losing the plot as I thought I found it on the A7RIV in wide tracking, must've been the A9 that I tried (although could've sworn it was both o_O)

And me for their ergonomics, everything else is nigh on perfect for my needs :facepalm:

It's easy enough to put up with it. There are bigger problems for me on the other brands. ergonomics is important of course but it isn't unusably bad :D

I still don't really understand why you'd want a Fuji when you could mount a 35mm f2.8 on an A9 and have a quite compact FF camera that'll give you better image quality and better speed and responsiveness too. I know there's the Fuji jpeg colour thing but I just don't see it and would rather shoot raw and use Nik filters if I want funky.

It's your money and you seem to want one though.

I did that, ended up keeping the Tamron. Sony is nice though.

What the general view on the Sony 35mm f1.8? Any good? I decided to go down this route. :)

There's a lot of stuff on Fred Miranda that I agree with. I think he said it's the sharpest 35mm he's tested.

It's sharp from wide open and that's what it seems to be biased for at the expense of bokeh smoothness. I don't think the bokeh is too bad and I've certainly seen worse plus it is subject and setting/background dependant. CA also gets criticised but IMO it's only with extreme backlit situations and is from what I've read no worse than some others which seem to escape criticism.

So, it's a sharp 35mm f1.8 with what you'd expect bokeh (but no better or worse really) that can give some ca with extreme backlighting that'll focus closer than expected which might come in handy.

PS.
I wouldn't overlook the 35mm f2.8. It's only f2.8 and lacks the close focus ability but it's very compact and makes for a compact camera and lens package. Plus of course there's the Samyang version which will save money.

It is when you have ape hands and your fingers rub on the lens when holding the grip ;) They don't on the A7RIV (and therefore I assume the A9-II) but both are out of my price range, especially now I"ve had 3 quotes back for my gear and it's worth pittance (relatively speaking ;)).

Going back to the animal eye AF, just watched a couple of youtube videos and they've shown animal eye af on the A7III, A7RIII and A7RIV all of which appear to track across the whole screen, is this still not tracking wide?

Not sure how they're showing animal eye AF tracking on youtube then, unless it's not tracking press just searching for an eye? :confused:

it tracks wide just fine. The real-time subject tracking with animal eyeAF only seems to be available on A9 bodies (don't know about APS-C bodies). Yes all have animal eye-AF and can track but not with the real-time tracking option. A7III and A7RIII don't have real-time tracking options for both human and animal (they have real-time eyeAF only, yes the two are different lol). A7RIV has it for humans only and A9 has is for both.

it's a bit confusing I know.

Also Nikon gear hasn't been the best at holding value tbh.

Until you've owned an X100 series family camera you won't understand, they just get under your skin.

The furthest I've gone is holding one, I felt no love and didn't take it any further. Mostly I prefer things I can quantify to fuzzy stuff and even if there's an itch does it itch so much that it makes owning two expensive cameras worthwhile? One APS-C and one FF? When the point is to slim down the gear and free up money?

Alan, is owning several bucket loads of manual focus lenses of the same focal length worthwhile, not to some of us, but to you yes, each to their own!!

They're all slightly different. I could show you ten pictures and point out the differences without once using wooly phrases like "gets under your skin."

Good choice, the X100 looks nice but let’s be honest it is complete turd of a camera. I can say that because I have owned two of them.

The lens on the X100 is complete junk.

The 35 f1.8 and A9 is much better choice.

Wide open its a bit soft. Worst lens on a fixed lens camera out of the lost.

Before settling for LX100ii, bought and sent back 2 of them!

I had an X100T and I loved to look at it although was really disappointed in the performance especially the super soft lens, it really is crud by today’s standards.

I then got an X100F thinking it would be a little bit better but still the same junk lens. Sold it after having it for 6 months and taking a huge 200 odd frames with it.

It’s the perfect camera for hipsters or those that don’t actually take any photographs.

I can see the appeal but if these cameras are £800-1000 I'd rather get my character and itchy skin from my existing A7 with a £50 35mm on it and run the files through Nik filters.

Even the original A7 with a 35/2.8 or even better the 35 f/1.8 is a much much better performer than any of the X100’s.
