The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I know everyone is a bit different, but what would people class as a decent all round walk about lens that is small and light?

The A9 is gone but I might either get an A7 with 28-70 or an A73 on loan for a bit - I have the 28mm F2 for sale but not sure this is verstile enough as a walk around lens. Although never really tried it as a general purpose walk about!

The majority of the A9 fund is now put to one side but the sale of the 28mm + maybe £100ish could be available for a lens so we are talking around the £350-400 mark.

I have one of these and I think it's ok and even good for a variable aperture standard range zoom. If you do some Googling I'm sure you'll find some example pictures taken with this lens.

One from Sunday with our Grandson.

24-105 at 61mm f4.5. The top eye looks slightly OOF, but I'm not sure why since there seems to be other stuff sharp in the same plane.

BTW what software are people using to apply firmware updates - are they coming through Sony home-fiddling or whatever it's called, or downloaded direct?

So i told the wife the plan on replacing my A7R with the A7III. Didn't go well. "But it looks the same you already have one"
I did think of just doing it but i think she would notice.

If she notices just tell her "i am glad we can agree that they are not the same"

How can I use my smart phone to remotely trigger the A9 and keep the raws on the camera?

Using imaging edge mobile.

Figured out I needed to take it off continuous shoot and put it into single shot for a start. Doesn't have a touch AF option though which is annoying
Doesn't save raw as far as I know?

I replaced my A7iii with an A7riii. The wife didn’t notice. However she did notice my 100-400 GM. [emoji4]
Why did you make that swap? I keep swaying from one to the other, only thing id really like is the better viewfinder.
My wife would notice the bigger camera and the lack of the red R.

Is she into photography? Genuinely curious, as my missus barely noticed when I switched from Fuji to Panasonic :D let alone just another model almost identical. I've gotten many a lens past her too - "Oh, it's nothing, just some cheap filters" [big ass MPB or Amazon box I'm signing off for] - she might be purposely ignoring mostly as she orders enough make up junk herself

Mrs WW wouldn't notice what camera I had but if I mentioned wanting a new one she'd buy it for me :D

PS.
Reminds me of an ex GF of mine who honestly couldn't tell one car from another. I once pointed at a Boxster parked next to a Merc saloon and she honestly struggled to see any difference between them :D She was gorgeous though. The Lord often gives with one hand and balances with the other and that's not just with women :D

What is your budget? and how wide would you like?
Looking around the £300 mark realistically! If I can get rid of my other Nikon bits probably a bit more, ideally I would go for the Samyang 14mm AF version but it's out of my price range.
Does it have to autofocus? I'd suggest a used Sigma 12-24 (rectilinear, so little distortion, and super-wide) in non-Sony mount with an adapter. I have one, and it's one of 4 Nikon mount lenses that I don't want to move on yet.
Not necessarily hence why I was looking at the Samyang 14mm Manual lens. I've not looked at Sigma specifically so will give them a look thanks! What Nikon adapter do you use?

:D I remember a time when my missus used to crack up at the ever increasing amount of equipment arriving at the door. She is worse than me now.

Quick tip, have you not tried the “I have just won a competition with (insert supplier name here) for a free whatever”.

Always used to work well for me.

Day 1 buy for me

Not sure I would ever buy a Tamron 70-200 again having had the G1 twice & the G2 for Nikon. Never seen lenses suck in so much dust as those. Maybe it won’t be an issue on a newly designed lens.

I must be due that excuse, I actually did win an Xpro1 on youtube 2 years ago and all she wanted to know was how much it was worth :D It's worth me not having to buy one was my answer.

Not really, shes just very on the ball, hard to sneak anything past her.
It's not so much you can't have it, she wants to know why i NEED it when we have half the house to refurbish.

Have you tried manning up?

I was curious and the cost difference wasn't too big so I took the plunge. So far I'm liking the better viewfinder and the higher res is great as I often crop, but the larger files are somewhat of a pain. I use an iPad Pro for a lot of my quick edits and it just takes that little bit longer now.

I still need to give the A7Riii a proper outing so it's too early to say if it was worth it and I certainly wouldn't rule out going back to an A7iii, although as it stands that's unlikely.

I can't tell if that's supposed to be an insult or not!

Either way, you know when you get married and you join finances it's not just one persons decision what that money gets spent on.

Wasn't mean't as insult!

I am married we have an account we each pay into to pay bills etc.

Whatever is left over its my business what I spend it on, just like I don't complain when she spends £150 every month getting her hair done or drops £500 on a handbag etc.

Having been down the road of living with a different girl, getting engaged and "joining finances" it isn't something I would ever do again. :ROFLMAO:

As a seasoned campaigner trust me she will have a little slush fund set aside for "womens things" you are mad if you don't have one too.

The AF version wasn't well received and I think most people concluded the MF was better!
With your budget as suggested above the old sigma 12-24mm might be an option. I remember distortion being bad at 12mm even with this lens but it might be easier to correct in software if there are profiles already available for it. Worth checking up :)

so the a9 arrived yesterday. only used it for a few shots with my daughter on the walk back from nursery. its going to take some getting used to not hearing any shutter sound. man, the focus accuracy is off the chart!! im not saying i put it through a real hard test, but every shot fired was bang on the eye. very impressive.

Stop it.

I notice Wex have two 16-35 F4 lightly used if anyone is interested.,
I had the search saved as a bookmark when waiting for a similar one - with about £100 off normal new price.
It's a very nice lens especially for video.

How have people got there a7iii set up button wise etc pls.

Also have people got the E-front curtain shut on or off?

Just a cheap manual one with aperture control - about £20ish. If you get the canon version then you might be able to AF through the MC11 adapter too.

The 85 1.8 they recently put out for the Fuji system looks decent, perfect alternative to the Fujifilm 90 F2 as it'll be 1/3rd the price. There's a couple reviews out there on it already, and though it has a few niggles it is FW upgradeable and YN have already fixed some bugs early reviewers reported, which is promising in itself. One reviewer found the AF to be more reliable than the 90mm which is oft considered Fuji's best prime, and there was very little in it in terms of IQ. If they fill the right gap for the SOny system could be interesting

Finally, welcome to the Sony A9. :D. The King! :D

Time to get rid of that Fuji gear, then sell the A9, then buy more fuji gear.... and an a7r2.
