The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Maybe want to put some more nails into Nikons coffin
I know couple videographers who use A7S. They have a whole work flow set around these cameras. I don't think they'd switch to any Nikon on day 1 since it won't have any support. This is the main issue for me also, I'll have get new batteries, RAW editor, tripod supports, adapters, flashes etc. Too much hassle that I may put up with a year or two down the line but not right away.

Dual pixel AF seems to affect base ISO dynamic range. But A7S was never really one for high dynamic range anyway. I think we'll see dual pixel AF which works better for video in A7SIII. That'll be it's main addition i think apart from the standard ergonomics, body, menu system update.

Damn, that A9 is dropping fast... be worth less than my A7iii soon. :D

A7rIII - £2900 with free rotolight.
Sure is..... I kind of knew the price would eventually drop like a stone, still happy with buying one :)

The A9 actually comes with a free Battery Grip and Rotolight Neo II for that price (£3699) not bad!!

Sony is being very aggressive after Nikons announcement and with Canon still to come but I dont think Canon will have a stupid song and dance like Nikon likes, they will just launch it.

Sony is going all aggressive with these new offers! :D

Are the A9's selling as well as expected? Nikon adopted that stupid pre-marketing thing on the last two big cameras (D850 got a lot of pre-release hype), although this one takes the biscuit

Dunno how well they are doing, especially with the A7iii out. Remember the DL? Oh dear.

With no new A9 series cameras and no A7SIII I wonder if Sony have a good idea of what Nikon will do and are ready with cameras in these lines to release at about the same time as Nikon?

It's interesting to follow the discussions on the Nikon mount being suitable for f0.95 lenses and the Sony mount not being suitable just as it wasn't suitable for FF and then not suitable for IS.

TBH I don't think you have to be a rocket scientist to know what Nikon will try and release, there's not much they can do over and above what Sony have achieved already. The biggest questions are what the actual performance will be like (ie whether it will be more like the gen 1 A7's or gen 3), what the ergonomics are like and whether it will be able to use f-mount well. I don't think Sony have a lot to worry about, they've got a very good system already. Nikon have everything to lose and have to make sure they nail it.

Dunno about being a rocket scientist but I do suspect that Sony will have a pretty good guess what Nikon are up to.

I do wonder why there's been no more A9 series cameras and no A7sIII so I'm just wondering if we'll see something about the time Nikon shows us or is about to show us something definite rather than rumor and FUD. Just by coincidence :D

The A9 was only released a year ago, it won't be replaced anytime soon. Sony isnt replacing cameras every year, more like 3 years+.

jesus if Nikon's release is like a first gen a7 they may as well not bother.
it needs to be well up there competing and offering something over the a73. and to do that at a competitive price will be painful for them.

exciting time.

I don't expect the A9 to be replaced anytime soon but I wouldn't be too surprised if Sony added another camera to the A9 line, like an A9r or s. That's what I meant and why I mentioned A9 series cameras rather than an A9II :D Especially as Nikon are rumored to be aiming up market with a more expensive camera.

Time will tell. Maybe the A7III was their one and only preemptive strike.

The badge, good ergonomics and a good UI might just be enough to give the loyal following something to latch on to and make a Nikon A7 sell reasonably well. I do think they'll do a bit better though and maybe a lot better :D

I actually think Nikon's marketing has been very clever. They're building massive hype through teasing the camera. Already people will have more or less made up their mind that they're buying it without any info on specs. This way they're already damaging Sony sales before having a product that's ready for market.

I think people should learn from the overhyped DF and DL.

I can't blame Nikon for trying to get people to put off buying a new CSC until theirs comes out. Early leaks and announcements are a well used strategy to try and stop people buying the competitions stuff and as few of us really need a new camera tomorrow many could really wait until 1st Q 2019 if it does take that long and if when it comes the Nikon is a bit of a let down there might be a flood of lightly used early adopter cameras on the used market.

I might be wrong but I can't see this new Nikon going the way of the DL as it's too important for them. They'll have to release something.

From what I was told, the Sony A9 will have a longer life-span compared to the A7 series and that Sony has a lot more to squeeze out of the Sony A9 via firmware updates. lol :D

The emphasis on ergonomics would suggest that Nikon feels this is their trump card - and for many, this is a very real issue. I could be wrong, but that would then suggest that otherwise the camera certainly doesn' better the A7III on general performance. I'm most interested to hear about the battery life. Rumours suggest they'll be using the EN-EL 15a battery. If that's the case, they'll really need to work a bit of magic with power-saving because it drained like a mutha-bitch when using LV on the D750. It's a slightly smaller capacity than the Sony battery:

NP-FZ100 - 2280 mAh
EN-EL 15a - 1900 mAh

I think you're giving people too much credit! ;)

I can't see this going the way of the DL. And the Df still has it's fans despite its problems.

Really, seems like they've been releasing new bodies every 2 weeks ;)

That's my thoughts, but I'm not holding my breath ;)
