The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

If you want a 50mm-ish lens that's so sharp and generally good across the frame it'll cut your eyeball the Sony 55mm f1.8 must be near the top of the lust... it's a younger Carol Vorderman in high heels and fishnets carrying a pizza, FOR ME.

So, what would you buy instead? For similar price/IQ/size?

Size isnt really as important as rendering to me, the Sigma 50 ART has more character, so does the Samyang 50 AF (even though this lens isnt as sharp), Canon 50mm 1.2, Mitakon 50 (MF), quite a few at that FL.

The reason for me to get the 55 would be size and quiet AF for video... but it wouldn't be a lens Id use as my main lens.

About to order a 24-70GM?
Panamoz and Jessops seem to have the best prices, nearly £200 difference between them though.
Any better prices out there that I might have missed?

What to do? That is the question :(

While I'm here...

That Tokina 20mm f2 looks interesting. I keep remembering the Siggy 20mm f1.8 I used to have, that lens was ok in the central area at f1.8 and excellent across the frame stopped down and I miss it and I'd expect the Tokina to be better and to beat it at wider apertures. Having an old manual 17mm has made me want wiiiiiiiiiiide and 20mm might not quite do it for drama but may be more useful for the less dramatic.

Why not get another Sigma and a dumb adapter?

The Sigma was AF and there's no aperture ring so it'd have to be one of the new all singing adapters plus I don't think they make the 20mm anymore so it'd have to be a used one but I think I'd rather get a native one and not have to faff on with adapters. I don't mind adapters with the old manual lenses but using them for more modern lenses doesn't hold the same appeal and charm for me. That Sigma was cheap though compared to the new Tokina.

Buy the Nikon version, it has the manual aperture ;) Great thing about Nikon mount lenses... all the older lenses have them. Cant imagine you can go wrong with the cost.

Good deal, wonder if Sony UK deals with EU warranty?

I really wish I used zooms sometimes, could save a lot of dosh and hassle.

Just seen that, thank you!

Any idea on what the warranty with Amazon is?
Are they grey imports by any chance?

You could use a cheaper Commlite adaptor and still manual focus if you like. The Commlite controls the aperture on EF lenses with no issues and it’s not like you’d need to AF a 20mm lens for much (although the adaptor does control AF)
