The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

For no good reason other than I was looking at this picture before the 55mm was mentioned...

A7 and 55mm f1.8 at f5 which I think in hindsight was too wide an aperture.

During my relentless research into the A7Riii (I think we'll all be happy when I can finally get hands on one ;)) I've seen on numerous occasions people complaining that it's really hard to see the AF point in the EVF when moving it with the joystick and the AF point in general as it's low contrast, apparently using the touch panel to choose the AF position is fine as the AF point highlights in orange. It appears the A9 is similar I believe. Is this another 'issue' that is really none issue? I know I sometimes lose the AF point on the Olympus for this reason, but it's not really an issue for me. That being said, with the type of shooting I do with the Olly I've got all the time in the world to move the point/frame to see the AF point better, if I was shooting sports etc it might be different.

What impresses me about the 55mm f1.8 is its quality across the frame even from wide apertures. I thought that the old Sigma 50mm f1.4 was good and also the Canon 50mm f2.5 I had too but the Sony is IMO easily better than both and the only thing against it is possibly that it isn't f1.4.

I do understand your view and to a extent I agree... there is a difference between f1.4 and f1.8 and when looking at shots of the same subject side by side you'll probably be able to pick the f1.4 shots out pretty quickly but what persuaded me to stay with the f1.8 once f1.4's became available was the bulk and weight penalties of the f1.4 lenses and accepting that in isolation f1.8 shots will be enough for me as these days I do try to limit the amount of times I take pictures with very thin depth of field.

Sure, the sharpness across the frame is great.

And for the 3D look that I am after, the subject should pop, like separated.

Was watching eBay someone was asking £3000 for a A7III and Sigma mc-11, it didn't sell I'm glad to say, serves the greedy sod right.

Usually this is done not because they expect the max amount but because they want offers, many people will assume the buy it now price is only the starting point so pricing it there will usually get a seller less.

Yes, I sold my T20 recently on the bay.
Offers started at £125 less than buy it now.
Waste of time but you have to respond.
I ended up at £15 less than my asking price.

Are those last three images with the Sigma? Really nice rendering.

I think you need to see the same shot at different apertures to be able to see if there's a significant difference f1.4 to f1.8.

Just looking photos by the Sigma 50A, the rendering is nice, but very clinical compare to an L.

At times I wish the bokeh balls would blend in more. This is @1.4

Look a little harsh in terms of sharpening, perhaps you've over sharpened a very sharp lens?

It was a fixed price sale not an auction.

It's the same amount I do on all my photos.

Thanks, thats what I mean, some lenses obviously need less sharpening than others, maybe the Siggy just needs a little backing off in post, could be the web compression Im seeing though.

Great photography btw.

Ordered one yet Calvin? ;)

All in good time, young man! :p

I wanna get another play with it first to satisfy myself about the ergonomics. I didn't really get a lot of quality time with it at the Photography Show.

That's the one thing I'm waiting on (y) Well that and being able to see the focus point ;)

Perhaps, but it's the bokeh really I am referring to the most.

It's a great lens though, especially for the money, and what I am talking about I am basically being super picky than anything.

And thank you very much :)

Yeah, I used to own it, it is a lovely lens. Heavy b****r... nothing like the 85 ART though, won't even go there because of the weight.

Has your A7 arrived yet?

I was referring to fixed price with offers enabled.

If they just wanted 3k and nothing less then yes I agree they were a greedy sod.
Yes it was not open to offers, I'm sorry I should have made that clear in my post, it was used item 662 clicks apparently I only watched it to see if anyone was daft enough to bite.

If I hadn't invested in the Fuji X system I'd be seriously thinking of a A7-3. Top notch photography Sir - wOOw
