The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

That's a big outlay for those times few times. Other than the MP count, the A7iii also has a 10fps mechanical shutter so at over £1000 cheaper than the Riii I think it could be a serious alternative. The A9's remaining standout features are then the blackout-free EVF and 20 electronic fps making it a £2000 premium for 2 features. It's certainly an interesting announcement from Sony and one I'm looking at seriously, although I only currently shoot with one AF lens so I'm not entirely sure I'd gain much in terms of AF overall!
The thing is Steve I have this two cameras so it's absolutely pointless looking at this one mate. It could be 10 quid and I'd still won't look at it because I already have these two cameras.

Its not going to replace any of my camera as it offer nothing new.

You need to understand it from my point of view.

I was till I saw this news... For the price of it compare to the D850 I think the A7iii could be the winner..
Lol how does that even compute when one is a higher resolution IQ beast? The D850's natural rival would be the Sony A7R III.

To be fair Jonney, you of all people don't need to buy any more cameras :) I was just responding to your question of what does the A7iii do that your existing bulging kit bag doesn't already. As you say, it doesn't offer anything over and above but for someone looking to move to Sony or upgrade existing kit, it makes a lot of sense over both the A7Riii and A9 for the large majority of real-world situations.

Have you ever needed to shoot at 1/32,000th of second?
You could apply that logic to anything, I rather have a feature than not and 1/32000 shutter is faster than 1/8000.
A truly usable blackout-free silent shutter is one of the biggest reasons I bought the Sony A9 and its sheer responsiveness...... why would I buy something slower? :D

Not everyone want big files.. I am perfectly happy with 24MP ive coped up to now... Might as well get a Sony that got good Live view etc and might have the same AF speed as the D500 till we seen better reviews we dont know if it does then I reckon this the camera i been waiting for

Of course you could. I agree that having a feature and using it aren't always directly linked but highlighting a feature that you will probably never use as a marker against another camera is a bit futile.

As I said to Jonney above, there's no point in you buying an A7iii because you've already got the A9 but for everyone else, it may make more sense to put the £2000 difference towards glass instead.

O definitely. If i was starting from scratch I'd go for either the a7mk3 or r3.

Where you save £500 on the camera you pay thousands more in lenses.

Well that true LOL. it bloody hard all this.. But then we got some nice advantage on the Sony ie Live veiw better video..

Or you could use that logic and buy a D750 for under £1000.

@Tom Green has a minty a72 for sale. could be a cheap way back into the system.

Ive already consider it but I feel the A7iii is the way forward if not the A7Riii. But there are a few things I am thinking about at the moment And you all be please I am not asking 20 questions I am keeping my trap shut lol

Perhaps for most, but for me silent black-out free shooting is the future, wouldn't buy a camera without it now.

Do you know for sure the A7iii does black out?

Is this one of your first questions out of 20???? lol

Yes as you mention it that the A9 doesn't have black out and I am wondering if you know for sure the A7iii does

so if you plan to make money with this camera you realistically need a 2nd a9. thats over £8k before glass.

Yup and last year he Went to Fuji as he was saying all these expensive kits wasn't needed

I've just looked at the Sony UK pages for A9 and A7iii

On the A9 No Blackout is a headline feature in the specifications section (together with 20fps and 1/32000 shutter) - but it's not mentioned on the A7iii page, so my suspicion is that you do get blackout with the A7iii
I'm sure once reviews start becoming available it's a question that will be answered quickly.

Black-out free silent shoot will eventually filter down eventually and perhaps the Sony A7 IIII will have it.
You have to consider that the Sony A9 is aimed towards the professional high-end market where most bodies are provided by agencies or hired.

The A7ii has already got silent shutter according to the Sony page, so it's just the blackout/20fps and whether that's worth the massive premium for the A9

  • Continuous Shooting at up to 10 fps[iii] with either Mechanical Shutter or Silent Shooting[iv] and full Auto Focus/Auto Exposure tracking

but your gear bag currently:

Sony A9 | 16-35mm f2.8 GM | 24-70mm f2.8 GM | 70-200mm f2.8 GM | 1.4x TC | 85mm f1.4 GM | Zeiss 55mm f1.8 | Sony RX100 III
i'd assume you plan on getting some return on that by working with it? so my point was do you really think another a9 as back up would be a must for you? could you not live without the blackout?
