The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

:D

And then a round of glass upgrades to make use of the sensor resolution and to keep the believers committed to the bandwagon :D

Followed by the A9Rii with improved stabilisation as anyone remotely shakey wont be able to get a sharp picture at 65MP

Of course you'll get sharp pictures at 65mp... if your prints and viewing remain the same :D

As I may have said once or twice before, I think it's worth starting at the end and working back to work out what kit and settings you need to get the end result you're happy with. If you "only" want to print whole images up to A3 and view normally then maybe almost anything will do, more so if all you do is view whole images on screen. It's only when doing things that push what the kit and user are capable of that any problems which very high mp counts may reveal will be visible. Take your 100mp pictures and view them normally and any slight issues which might be revealed by viewing massive pictures closely will very probably be invisible.

Not bought a new camera body, but did manage to pre-order the iPhone X from Apple. Quite surprised I managed to get one too! :D

Anyone else getting one?

DOOOOOOOO IIIITTTTT. I've been pretty impressed by the a7rii so far.

From the marketing material it says 2x faster than a7rii in low light which makes sense as it has more contrast points, same phase as a7rii but with improved algorithm so I'm not sure the af will be 2x as fast with pd in say afc. Not much point in my eyes going from a7rii to a7riii for so much more dosh, it's an evolution not revolution like the a7rii was at the time and the a9 is now.

Ideally I'd love an a9 with the 42mp sensor, would be nuts.
I'm too invested into Nikon now tbh, plus Sony still don't have all the lenses I'd like yet.

What would you like?

Cheaper would always be nice :D

I think that Sony has pretty much everything I'd want. If I wanted a zoom they're all there, I think. I mostly use primes and they're mostly there. Maybe there isn't a compact f1.4 at every focal point,I'd like a 35mm f1.4 the size and price of the f2.8 but you can't have everything... :D

Oh, just thought of something. The Sony 50mm macro I bought was a pile of doggy doo so I'd like Sony to redo it or for Sigma to bring one out.

A 150-600mm or similar would be nice.

Just had a look at the prices of the Sony FE lenses, holy moly  Definitely will be sticking with Nikon ;)

I don't feel they're as bad as they once were, the newer stuff is dearer though, looking at some of the kit I'm contemplating it seems to be available used with some regularity, I used to moan about the pricing but I don't really use the longer/faster zooms (70-200/100-400) or need the fast 16-35 so for me the stuff isn't too bad (and the 24-70 f2.8 is £1500 at Panamoz....)!

Unfortunately for me my 70-200 f2.8 and 150-600mm are my most used lenses so I'd have to buy the 70-200mm and 100-400mm for a whopping £5k.

My 70-200mm f2.8 VRII and Tamron 150-600mm cost me £1950 for the pair, both new from U.K. stores. Admittedly there was a combined cash back of £350 but even so it would still have 'only' been £2300 for both vs £2500 for one Sony lens.

Your spot on though and its why not everyone will jump onto Sony, even historically on A-Mount their own stuff has been pricey v the rest - I suspect until we see more 3rd Party Sigma and Tamron glass for E-Mount that will remain the case here.

The beauty of shooting Canon is for us, we can use our Canon lenses with Adaptors, Nikon users will need to change entire setup. I can use an A7 as a back up body and use all my lenses.

Yeah but it's still kind of a fudge. Better than nothing though.

And more :D

I'm still not seeing some of the bad stuff some reviewers are reporting. CA, vignetting, sharpness across the frame, field curvature... I haven't had any issue yet. The one issue I see is that the bokeh can be not so nice at close focusing distance but this is hardly a surprise.

Slightly off the current theme, but why is it the only times I need my tripod is when it isn’t with me!!!! We had the most amazing sunset tonight and my tripod was 450 miles away in Derbyshire. In hindsight I would have also used my flash to highlight the rocks. Although on a positive note, I’m impressed with the OSS, this is at 1/4

Nice.

Slightly off the current theme,...

Don't worry, someone will put things back on track and start whinging about Sony prices again soon.

F1.2 is where it's at. Are you happy with the lens? Seems some justification.

The reviews I've read don't seem to match what I'm finding, the issues they're found I haven't.

This lens is another two in one lens, it can be funky wide open but stopped down it's just a nice modern lens.

So, I'm happy enough. I'm not sure it's worth three of four times the price of an old 50mm f1.2 but it's certainly sharper at f1.2 than my Rokkor, it's built like a tank and it mounts without an adapter. So maybe it is :D

Yeah, I like it, it has character, to me thats more important than chart crap.

More of an A9 query than A7riii (as none has one yet), does the AF stick do anything but move the AF point? Thinking it would be handy if you could press it as a button to activate focus magnification for manual focus.

Could always use another of the many assignable buttons if it doesnt.

Yup. As a system it's ridiculously expensive....body prices relative... add glass etc and it gets silly. Thank goodness i use like 2 primes lol.
In fairness from what I’ve experienced, the main reason for the high cost is that there isn’t a huge selection of 3rd party AF lenses in FE mount, when you couple that to not having a huge supply of second hand Native lenses, meaning that those available retain their value, this then leads to the system appearing expensive.

It doesn't appear expensive, it is expensive. Yes most of the lenses are optically excellent but like for like they are pretty much all more expensive than CaNikonSigma equivalents f you're using a different system. Forget second hand prices, good glass retains it's value lemons don't.

Nope. It appears expensive because the lenses are a lot more expensive. There's not a supposedly huge supply (although tbh id be surprised if youd wait more than 3 days to find what you want vs 1 day Canikon if you are realistic).

I've been messing around with all the brand's for a number of years from 10mm to 300mm and never had any issues with used stock if the lens existed.

Sony stuff is expensive period.

I guess it’s relative to the individual. Personally I don’t find the pricing that inhibitive, yes maybe a couple of hundred quid. I managed to switch a 5d3 with Tamron 24-70 f2.8 and Canon 70-200 f4 l is for a new A7R2, 16-35 f4, 55mm f1.8, 85mm f1.8, the only cost to me has been circa £600

It's not relative to the individual, it's relative to the market. At the five comparative lenses I looked at Sony were between 10-50% more than the Nikon equivalent. 50% more for an 85mm f1.8, that's expensive in anyone's book imo.
