The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

But all these GM lens are way out of my price range [emoji24]

I take some pictures nearly every day (took three so far today! Yipeeeee!) but not always with my Sony kit and not all are of interest to you guys.

Using your Panasonic more mate? Is it cos you more lens for it?

My GX7 is a little more discrete and can shoot silently with the electronic shutter but it's often more likely that I'll take MFT (my G1 or GX7) because I'm going somewhere where I don't want to take the A7 in case I get mugged. I don't live in the best of areas. My G7 is about the same size as my A7 with a prime but with my 12-35mm f2.8 it's a bit smaller than my A7 would be with an equivalent lens.

I tend to use my A7 more when I want the best quality I can get or when I/we are going to nicer places or when I want to use manual lenses in a nice place :D

Just had a thought about the just announced drop in interest rates...

This will hurt me as my only income is from money in the bank but I also thought about a possible effect to us lot... As the interest rate drops even further to ever more miniscule levels more foreign investors may pull out of the £ and this may cause the £ to drop further and lead to yet more price increases.

Maybe, but on the flipside it's good for those of us with business loans and mortgages ;)

we may have to make do with what we have already got. imagine that!

There'll always be something new and shiny to tempt people and people will always find the money :D

There are simple little economies we can all make to free up money for gear... cut down on the booze and fags or for truly epic savings stay single :D

Think yourself lucky - my Missus is into photography as well, so every time I buy myself a new lens she gets one as well :)

Thankfully she shoots a Canon DSLR so I don't have to pay two lots of Sony tax :D

My GF isn't interested in carrying a camera of any type. She used to shoot a lot (and I mean a lot... pretty much non stop!) with her iphone thingy but she stopped some time ago as my camera takes better pictures. Actually I think she may have stopped because every disk, pen and card is full of her iphone shots and video clips.

I have a tracker mortgage, and every little helps.

These GM lenses, there are only three at the moment right? The two f2.8 zooms and the 85mm, costing 2k, 2.5k and 1.7k?

Eclipse and Sony sensors
I've noticed competitors of Photosol implying that Eclipse (ethanol) damages sensors but I found this link http://photosol.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/sony-update.pdf
Which says it was all a scare.
Any opinions?
The link also states how fragile floating sensors are e. g. A7r2.
Does anyone have a link for such sensor cleaning technique please?

Hi,
yes Sony have 3 GM lenses at present :) and I think you are right regarding the prices as the 24-70mm and 85mm both went up in price recently.

News at 10 just reported that the £ has "plummeted" after news of the interest rate cut so it is possible that the every little bit that helps may be wiped out and possibly more by rises in the cost of imported goods and the impact of the rapidly increasing national debt. How a retired engineer could see this coming (but my ex is an economist) and our leaders couldn't is easily explained by the fact that our leaders couldn't find their own arses with both hands, a search light and a Sherpa guide. And then there's the millions who aren't in debt and rely on interest payments to boost their income. They've been ignored for years and will now probably spend less and as they're a large part of the economy this will matter. Thankfully I'm ok and not vastly affected by all this other than being annoyed by the incompotence of our leaders and the madness of it all. I can sit back and see the comedy unfold but I think that on balance more people will be worse off than better off after days rate cut and that may well matter.

For us gear heads I think that the coming times may be bad times for buying but good times for selling off unwanted gear. When I moved from Canon DSLR's to CSC's I actually sold some kit for more than I paid for it but then unlike our leaders I've lived in the real world and my brain functions without the need of a Sherpa guide.

On a more positive note although I can't see a short term end to this mess (God help us if Labour get in) prices of used gear will rise too so any increase in the cost of new gear will be at least partly offset by a rise in the cost of used kit so things may balance out and indeed kit in the cupboard may in the short term be sold for a profit.

We live in interesting and IMO badly managed times.

Perhaps news at ten exaggerated a little with plummeted about a cent on the dollar and maybe two on the Euro, I certainly expect deposit and Isa accounts suffering with less interest

I feel really glad our politicians are on holiday from Westminster I guess they either feel nothing too worry about or let the brexit MPs handle the issue

It wasn't the leaders who voted Brexit, it was roughly 51% of the general public. If I recall most of both the remain and brexit campaign warned of this happening.

Morning Folks,

Anyone using a hand or wrist strap for there A7 please if so which one?

Cheers

Yep, I use this one:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0115FC0B0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
(Peak Design Cuff)

I have this attached on the right hand part of the camera (as usual), but attached to the bottom of the camera on my L-plate. Means it doesn't get in the way at all, if carrying camera on a tripod I can hold the tripod neck with my hand still through the strap, and if I want to use the PD Slide strap instead it sits nicely lens facing down without using the tripod plate.

If I'm explaining this badly let me know and I'll post a picture.

EDIT - Bored, so took a few picks to show:

Not sure the leave campaign warned the this!

That the one am thinking getting as I've a clutch already from dslr days but doesn't fit this a7.

Not sure how you got yours set up pls send images

Cheers

Edit. Just seen your edited post. Ah you got a plate

Fits any Acra-Swiss type head (I use a Vanguard and it's perfect).

It's been fitted to my camera permanently since buying. All the doors (including battery door) are fully accessable and it gives the camera bit of protection.

The reason I originally tried it was because the A7ii felt a bit too small in my hand (little finger hanging down) and was a bit uncomfortable. Now it fits my hand perfectly :)

This was just a generic one from eBay I think. Think they are mostly all the same, apart from the Really Right Stuff version that is a LOT more expensive.

EDIT - Just searched my eBay purchases, this is the one I bought:

Hmm won't fit manfrotto head then

The L plate has a standard tripod thread on the base too so you can just screw the Manfrotto head onto it.

Yep most did from the campaigns I saw. They said it might not be as bad as the remain campaign were making out it would be, but did say it was likely and that the first 18 months would be difficult but 'we' needed to consider what it would be like 5 years down the line. TBH how anyone can predict the economy 5 months down the line let alone 5 years is beyond me.

Can you just buy a D ring or similar for the A7, you should be able to use your clutch then?

I just seem to spend money when Wissel replies in this thread. First an A7II, then a 24-70, now an L Plate! :)

This is the one I bought, works when I use the belt very secure so far
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Peak-Desig...&srs=1720811031&ie=UTF8&qid=1470396204&sr=1-9

Very similar to the Fuji GB-001 Grip Belt that I bought when I was looking for a strap-free solution. I'm nervous of simple loops as the camera can swing about too much for my liking.

N.B. I've threaded the quick-release loops for an Optech strap so I can just go about with the camera in my hand or put the strap back on easily.

Nice and secure and right in the palm of my hand where I need it :)

BTW the lens on my A7 in the pics above is my 1970s FD 35mm f/2.0 SSC - thorium doped concave-front-element version and one of the better lenses Canon have ever made.

I dropped into Park Cameras' London shop yesterday to have a look at the FE 35mm f/2.8, but they were out of stock - no getting some of the last of the cheaper old stock for me, then...

The guy I spoke to practically insisted I try the Loxia 35mm f/2.0 instead, which is rather more competitive than it was since the Sony price hike

Somewhat surprised to find that, in casual testing on my A7 at least, the difference in IQ was not huge. The corners are certainly a bit better at f/4, but the centre of the FD holds its own well against the modern Zeiss lens.

There are some nice creature comforts with the Zeiss - such as automatic EVF zooming while focusing, EXIF data and, of course, a smaller and lighter package, but difficult to say its £979 worth of difference. :cautious:
