The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Hi Andrew i just persevered with the standard A7ii clip and it went on fine then the bottom one fits on my tripod plate. Took a few mins but went okay, sorry for delay email really slow today

Really wow God knows how u managed that lol was it very tight fit?

Just manage get it on wow

Fits any Acra-Swiss type head (I use a Vanguard and it's perfect).

It's been fitted to my camera permanently since buying. All the doors (including battery door) are fully accessable and it gives the camera bit of protection.

The reason I originally tried it was because the A7ii felt a bit too small in my hand (little finger hanging down) and was a bit uncomfortable. Now it fits my hand perfectly :)

This was just a generic one from eBay I think. Think they are mostly all the same, apart from the Really Right Stuff version that is a LOT more expensive.

EDIT - Just searched my eBay purchases, this is the one I bought:

Does the bracket fit okay the listing you have quoted is for the mk one model or at least the image is but title says mkii only ask as he is sold out and looking at the different ones left lol

Looks as if lba72 is for the mkii

Cheers

Never noticed the image. The one I have is def for the Mkii and fits perfectly. No markings on it anywhere I'm afraid.

EDIT - loads on Amazon if that helps.

I used to love using Agfa 1000 ASA slide film (can't recall its 'proper' name), so far I've been unable to replicate the fine, soft grain it had, can anyone suggest a combination of settings I could use to try and emulate this effect?
Cheers in advance.

Eclipse and Sony sensors
I've noticed competitors of Photosol implying that Eclipse (ethanol) damages sensors but I found this link http://photosol.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/sony-update.pdf
Which says it was all a scare.
Any opinions?
The link also states how fragile floating sensors are e. g. A7r2.
Does anyone have a link for such sensor cleaning technique please?
No worries. For anyone interested...
I went ahead with the wet clean using Dust Patrol Gamma optical cleaning fluid and their 24mm pads. Didn't worry about how to lock up the sensor for cleaning as I couldn't find a way of doing it on the net that I was comfortable with, (by that I mean some suggestions of doing the clean with the camera switched on at the Menu for Camera Cleaning operation which apparently holds the sensor rigid)
Anyways, I have a nice clean sensor.
To recap it seems Eclipse is safe but AeroEclipse is deemed safer. All I had in hand was very old Eclipse E2 from my Canon DSLR days so figured that was way too old OR more likely inappropriate so went to www.crookedimaging.co.uk to get the Dust Patrol stuff.

Not sure what you mean by menu for camera cleaning operation

If you haven't already you could try looking at Nik filters as there might be something in there to suit you.

Not sure if you know but a while ago Nik stuff became free and you can download it here...

https://www.google.com/nikcollection/

If you haven't got these they might be worth downloading, as they're now free :D

Or possibly the VCSO Filter Packs they're for old film Cameras?

I have packs 1-6 and they only have Agfa Scala and Agfa Vista.

Are they any good pal as was looking at them last night but how many preset do we get for the price?

Yes and no. There's a lot of 'samey' ones, and I have no reference to how they compare with the original films tbh, but they're good to use as a starting point. I've adapted about half a dozen and just use those. I found the presets galore bundle much better value tbh, got something like 480 presets for around £20 IIRC. Again there's only half a dozen or so I use, but much better value than VSCO, and there are some film type presets in there.

I ordered a set of macro tubes which arrived this morning.

Just tried them with the 70-200 f4 and they seem to work really well (so far). Need to give them a bigger test later today I think.

Gave the macro rings another test, this time finding the closest distance I could focus with and without the rings attached. Thought I'd post for anyone else wanting a cheap and cheerful macro get-me-by :)

These images are all straight out of camera, full size Raw files converted to JPEG in Lightroom. The only thing I have done is cropped the lower images.

Full images with no crop.

With rings (10 & 16mm):

These next two shots are 1:1 crops of the images above. I say roughly as all I did was click 1:1 view in LR, then crop to this area.

Lastly just for the hell of it, this is a 3:1 crop with the rings:

I nearly bought a set of rings a few months ago, but kept reading they don't work on the full frame Sony very well as were made for APS-C and vignette badly on FF. I saw these ones a couple of days ago that stated they were for FF, so gave them a go:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B010D2S9HU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They are just cheap plastic things (and do have a tiny bit of play) but they'll do for now.

I do believe Sony will surprise us with the A9 but it's just a question of how far they will push the spec/tech.
Look at what they did with both the A7 generations, both made big leaps forwards.

What is everyone shooting on. I was a slave to Apeture Priority on my 6D, but A on the A7II doesn't seem anywhere near as good, it seems to just want to stay at 1/60 second? Am I doing something wrong here?

This drove me nuts about auto ISO on the a7 as well! Because it doesn't allow you to set a minimum shutter speed, it uses 1/60th second regardless of focal length :( The answer appears to be to dial in a shutter speed in M mode, which is a bit annoying as you won't get a faster shutter speed when the light changes.

Edit: I believe this is fixed to an extent with the a7rII

So basically there is nothing that can be done to replicate the 6D's Apeture Priority without switching from A to S then to M? That seems rather silly of Sony?

Yep it's daft. You don't need to go to s mode though, you can change the shutter speed in m mode. Crazy that they didn't resolve this via firmware, one of the reasons I switched to Fuji instead (albeit I have just bought a used a7 for giggles having sold my 6D earlier in the week).

You could do what I do select your ISO instead of using auto works ok for me

I like to keep my ISO as low as possible, so had it set to 100 on the 6D.
If I set it to 100 on here is slows the shutter speed right down to unusable images!

I don't know if it's because I'm not used to it yet, and it will be fine give a month of shooting, or if I'll ever get used to it?

Not had a 6D but a 5D3 I mainly use aperture priority and tend to go for lower ISO myself, on my a7m2 I have no issue of shutter speed being lower than I recall on my canon bodies are you using all other settings as you did on the Canon.

Say the focus point or maybe you used spot metering on one body and evaluative on the other.

If your speed is slow in theory your images would be a bit light all the time hence asking about the metering mode

Very odd would not like that I prefer keeping shutter speed up unless I am looking for a specific effect

I'll recheck everything tomorrow to see what's going on. I literally have had it out of the box walking around the garden today with it.
I usually use zone metering I think, allowed to spot. I'll report back some settings tomorrow.

I appreciate you taking the time to comment and help me out in this!

No worry hope you find something simple

I think I've mis-understood...the 1/60th second behaviour is usually attributed to auto ISO. If you have the ISO set to 100, and everything is coming out at 1/60th second, then something doesn't sound right!

I think the shutter speed may vary with the focal length of the lens? I think the cameras sees the focal length of the lens and sets what it thinks is an acceptable shutter speed? At least I think that's what happens.

1/60 is often useless so when things get silly as the light drops I switch from Aperture to Manual and dial in a sensible aperture and shutter speed. Shutter priority has to be watched as the camera will possibly select the widest aperture and you may not want that so it's either Aperture or Manual for me.

Lol it's only me wishful thinking!

Fair enough but why are you even looking for yet another camera when you've already got the best kit now? I know GAS is a major factor but realistically, what's stopping you shooting with the body/lenses your already have?

I don't think I've seen you share any photos here although maybe I just missed them?

The most recent being September 2015? I've said before, nobody can tell anyone what they should/shouldn't buy but I can't help feeling that it's a bit ridiculous to be dreaming about spending £4k on yet another Sony body when he's already got the best kit they offer but hasn't shown results from it.

Come on, let's see what they can do :0)

Fair enough pal. Even I don't post many images on here but I do take a few and when I remember I put them on Flickr.. Have you a Flickr page as I don't recall seeing many of your images to be honest but then again I don't go looking lol
