The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

proper surprised the 5d3 failed to lock focus mate... hope the x2 is better lol..... did you have the af assist on both?

na no af assists enables

So am I tbh, the rii is rated -2 EV and the 5D3 middle point is rated -3 EV. o_O

i thought its -2v on the 5d3 but only the 6d is -3v?

Basically i had these white clear storage boxes on a table stacked up and my phone screen right at the bottom illuminating the scene with the lights completely off in my room and the 5d3 could not focus at all . I have had this issue before tbh where when shooting in very low light, it does hunt and struggle to focus.

The 6d is has better low light focus.

Could it be the sigma art lens? should focus fine in low light? i will try an apples to apples and use just the sigma on both cameras

I think its officially rated at -2 but DPR got it to lock at -3.

i haven't got a 5d3 to try here I have a 6d though and a 1div will give it a go tonight

1dx2 here in may though :-) and gonna keep the straight a72 with metabones.... my camera situation is out of control lol

Looking excellent but it was expected, be interesting to see it compared to the Zeiss Batis 85mm f1.8.
From reports, the Zeiss has different rendering and better contrast, the sharpness and bokeh is better on the GM.

Here are the Sony FE 24-70mm f2.8 GM samples....

I'm more interested in the GM zoom's, I am pretty pleased with the Zeiss primes so may stick with them going forwards.

I've managed to control mine, sold off the A7II, just have two A7RII's now :) lol

1DX2 and D5 are going to be incredible. Im looking forward to the trickle down though, those cameras are just to big for me.

the gms look good.... I have never seen sample pics that don't though to be honest lol... wait until proper people get hold of it and review it failing that preorder it AND TAKE IT BACK IF YOUR NOT HAPPY AND REVIEW IT FOR EVERYONE ELSE LOL

yep 1dx2 had me instantly cant lie when I had the 1dx originally a few years back that was the biggest mistake I ever made getting rid of that camera :-(

every photo I have seen of the 85mm batis it looks quality that gm renders differently to it though I can see some getting the batis some the gm... for me the batis would be the the one esp considering the price but that's if you can actually get one

Due to the way DSLR autofocus works (mostly the size of the secondary mirror), it doesn't benefit from lenses wider than about f2.8, so even with the f1.4 lens, the DSLR's AF module only gets about f2.8 worth of light to work with. Mirrorless cameras though will use all the light you can throw at them, so the f2 Batis is giving the A7RII about a stop more light to focus with. With the 35mm f1.4 you'd probably see an even better performance.

So not really surprising results you got there.

Really hyping the gm seeing it compared to a zeiss Otus now lmao....

I can understand people comparing any higher end lens to an Otus as they seem to be the current gold standard but I do wonder how much of a faff on these lenses will be when used on an optical camera. The place for an Otus is on an EVF equipped camera, IMO.

I can't see myself ever under any circumstances even for a fleeting moment considering using an Otus and to be honest I wouldn't even waste a second of my time glancing at one in a shop never mind spending several seconds actually picking it up such is my disinterest. Lenses this expensive and of this bulk aren't for me not when you can get within a hair of the image quality* from something more compact, lighter and much cheaper.

*As I keep admitting... I have low standards... :D

I think the Zeiss Batis range is good enough for most users, I'm hoping they do the Batis 135mm next.
I believe the Batis 18mm is out next month.
Can't see them making a Batis 50/55mm as Sony has the stellar FE 55mm f1.8
I prefer the design and build of the actual Zeiss lenses compared to Sony versions.

I think the Zeiss rubber grips would irritate me, and then there's the 85mm cats eye bokeh.

I know some will love it (the cats eye thing) and it does give a different look which will enhance some shots and at some point I may change my mind about it.

You know, since all this talk about cats eye bokeh, I've been seeing it everywhere. Old photos, other people's photos, and even on a bunch of TV shows (like Happy Valley). Either way it hasn't bothered me in real world use of the 85mm so far.

Anyway here's a worst case scenario for it, with my NAS servers conveniently supplying the line of out of focus highlights. I've not seen anything anywhere near that extreme in practice, so I suspect out of focus foreground items may be more affected than background.

Ignore the colour fringing, it's motion blur (handheld at 1/10) not a lens artifact.

Lovely jubilee :) Batis.

Some will love it... and at least there's now a native lens choice for those who don't.

Yup, choice is good for us consumers and Sony seems to be addressing things at a steady pace. :)

Just a heads up the sigma mc11 is £179 on jessops £40 cheaper than wex etc ;-)

Not bad, I have a feeling this adaptor with the Sigma Art lenses will be a good combination.
It's great to see Sigma making some direction towards the FE mount.
It's a shame they didn't just start doing FE lenses though.

I'm holding off from buying one at the moment as got rid of the r2 so just have the a72 and a7s2 BUT I have a feeling the sigma 35mm and the a7s2 with this adapter is a low light monster lol

But the A7SII doesn't have a PDAF system like the A7RII :(
