The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Hmm two cracks just randomly appeared on each side of my A7R's LCD. I was photographing something with the LCD tilted and they literally just appeared out of nowhere!!!!!!!!!!

Luckily I've recently bought it from LCE... 7 days ago.... 3k shutter count!

Got to Brean Beach in Somerset yesterday and given that the Hinckley Point "C" Nuclear Power station was supposed to have the financials [£27 Billion] signed off by EDF last week but wasn't, I thought this cloud over the existing site made a statement if nothing else ;-)
Distance to the plant is approx 12 Km as the crow flies.

Anyway, onto more positive topics than a random LCD cracks.

I bought the A7 so I could use FF lenses as they are intended. So far I've picked up these gems:

-Voigtlander 40 1.4
-Voigtlander 50 1.7
-Voigtlander 70 1.8

I'll probably add in the 35 1.2, 21 1.8, and 15 4.5. Tempted to throw in a Contax G 45 & 90 along with a couple of choice Leica R's as well.

So far I'm really happy, I'm getting some lovely images with real character. Nothing boring and clinical like the native lenses! So far it's really suiting me.

Those lens fit this camera without adaptor??

You seem pretty cool about your gear 'disaster', I'd be pretty upset rather than "Anyway, onto more positive topics than a random LCD cracks" ??
I know LCE will sort it BUT.....

You may have trouble explaining that one to them

tell me about it. I was literally in the Lotus store in London photographing their cars and it just appeared while I was looking at the LCD!!!! My stance will be 'there's no sign of damage, just bloody fix it....

Can you point me to those lens as I been trying find them. Love to have some classic lens how much were they pls

AFAIK it's a 40 1.4, 50 1.5 and 75 1.8. Rookies you need to learn how to google mate

No... they are Leica M mount lenses so they fit the A7 with an adapter, my adapter cost £10 from amazon although I might splash out for a Voigtlander close focus adapter.

These things happen, I was ridiculously lucky to pick up a 3k shutter count A7R at that price.... to be honest it was a bit of a comedy show... they had in 2 A7Rs and they couldn't figure out for the life of them how to get the shutter count... despite me telling them... then they told me that the A7R didn't even have a shutter (I'm f. serious) and so the shutter count was irrelevant. I thought better than to ask them what the BLOODY HUGE NOISY METAL THING WAS.

Shame it March as I would have to wait till then for you to sell your 70-200 lol

Anyway, here's a few more from my first week with the Sony & Voigtlander combo. I'm quite liking classic glass meets high tech. The A7R reminds me of my OM-D + Voigtlander f0.95 combo that travelled with me for 2 years round SE Asia, except it feels a few notches up in terms of ergonomics & IQ. I was fooled into thinking Fuji was the photographers camera.. when really it's the Sony, put it in M, one dial for A, one for S, and one for ISO... plus helicoid manual focus... what else do you need?

I won't be parting with my lenses just yet, remember the f4 versions will be lighter and more compact than the f2.8 equivalents.
I am looking forward to seeing what the G Master series brings to the table. :)

Batis ouch do they justify the cost?

This is the first system since my D7000 (17-55 DX 2.8) where I'm tempted to buy a zoom.... you know what.... I was looking at images the other day from the D7000 and in reality there's nothing in it compared to the 'upgrades' I've ploughed cash into over the years. There's not a lot in it really :

I used to also have the D7000 with the 17-55mm f2.8 and it was a stellar combination. That said a f2.8 lens made for a DX sensor is not the same as a f2.8 lens made for a FX sensor.

I am certain the G Master series will set a new benchmark :)

I'd have to go against that. In my experience - relatively brief I may add, dslr cameras are less susceptible to gathering dust on the sensor.
My a7 a6000 and a7rii all showed dust visible on the sensor on long exposures shortly after I'd bought them.

The thing with cameras with flappy mirror mechanisms is that there's lubricant to come off and also tiny bits of the flappy mechanisms fly off too.

My 20D was a demon for this but settled down a lot in later life (I had it over 7 years) and I assume it did so because all of the oil was used up and anything that was going to come off the moving parts had done so. My 300D and 10D were affected too although the worst was the 5D.

I do many more lens changes these days than I did when I had DSLR's and I've had very significantly fewer instances of debris on the sensor and hanging around forums I'd say that many more people seem to have had experiences more similar to mine than to yours and Twist's so I'm at a loss to explain what's happened to you two.

Another thing is that years ago the CSC makes had much better anti contamination coatings and cleaning systems than the DSLR manufacturers had, if they had any at all. I don't know how modern Canon's and Nikon's are kitted out but I hope they've got better but certainly recent Nikon internet panics seem to indicate otherwise with all of those stories about oil flying all over.

It's not bad Karma with you two is it? Haven't broken any CSC's on purpose have you? They could be coming back to haunt you...

I think these Voigtlander lenses look lovely. I've only ever had one but sold it and always regretted it.

I bought my A7 with the intention of using old lenses maybe more than new but I seem to be gravitating more towards the AF lenses now.

Lovely pictures :D

I can't comment on canon as I've never had or wanted one. But never had any issue with Nikon apart from the odd 2nd hand camera I acquired that hadn't been looked after as it could have been.

I wasn't aware of Nikon having common problems?? Obviously the d600 had the oil issue. But we are talking dust/dirt. My d90, d7200, d610, d810 never needed a clean.

I also can't make a comparison of other mirrorless cameras as I've only owned Sony. What I can say is that every Sony I've had( a6000, a7, a7ii &a7rii) has needed regular cleaning because dust has been visible in photos, often ruining perfectly good landscape shots. I'm very careful when I change lenses etc so I don't put this down to anything I'm doing wrong.

Rookies has had similar issue with a brand new a7ii, so doesn't appear that it's just twist and I.

Surprising to read that you change lenses so often. You always mention that the 35 f2 is glued to your a7..

The 35mm f2.8 has been pretty much on since I got it although it recently briefly gave way to a Rokkor 85mm. I haven't been out much recently due to commitments which have kept me pretty busy since coming back from holiday last summer but certainly before that I did a lot of lens changes with my A7 and also with MFT. These days my MFT kit sees more lens changes.

Dunno about Nikon having too many common problems but there's certainly been a lot of chatter on line about oil on sensors. Isn't that all a part of the same issue. Guess I could be just lucky but generally I thought people were, like me, having fewer issues with CSC and that's the impression I've got from other parts of the net.
