The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Has anyone else used a legacy 24mm f2.8 (Zuiko, FD etc...) that works without the vignetting?

the OM 24mm f/2.8 has quite noticeable vignetting on a 5D, though it's easily fixable in PP.

I haven't shot much with it wide open as you might prefer to do, but this was probably around f/5.6, SOOC (well, Lightroom RAW defaults)

That's puzzling, it being the same as the Leica R lens that's obviously fine as tobers has proved, and in any case it's a 35mm film lens, perhaps it's the adapter seeing as they were really intended for APSC NEX cameras.

b****r! That'll be it!

Oh well... £9 down the drain... Shame as it works well with my 28mm and all the rest. 24mm must just push it too far.

I suppose I'll have to splash out for another Novoflex????

.... or a different 24mm

I think Alan's right, these things were made for APS-C Nex and on APS-C I'm sure my 24mm will be fine and I'm pretty sure that any other 24mm will vignette the same when mated to an A7 via an APS-C adapter...

I think I'll be using wider lenses at smaller apertures. I tend to shoot at wider apertures at 50mm equiv FoV + but these wider lenses suit deeper DOF I think.

ARGH!

The Sony software is frustrating me.

Do I really have to give Adobe yet more money to get the best from this camera.

Question to all...

I really dont want to shoot jpeg or bounce in and out of the Sony software and process tiff in CS5. Is there anyrthing you guys can recommend to process raws on a pc or is the only game in town Lightroom?

Cyberlink PhotoDirector 4 Ultra is free with this months Practical Photography magazine. http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/th...embers-practical-photography-magazine.519119/

No idea what it's like but reviews seem okay: http://www.amazon.com/Cyberlink-PTD...or-Ultra-Download/product-reviews/B009T8GLWK/

DXO Optics Pro 9 is £79: http://www.dxo.com/intl/photography/dxo-optics-pro

Lightroom is what I use mainly use though, think it will be hard to beat. They all have 30 day free trials anyway so just use one of those until you decide what you want.

Good to hear the AWB is proper.

As for adapters : take a dremel (or die-grinder) to the inside of the vignetting adapters ... go for it!

Maybe try a 3rd party 24mm in MD mount first? I can vouch for the Cosina/Vivitar/Miranda/Carl Zeiss Jena (all the same thing) 24mm f2.8 being a good lens, at least in the centre. on my initial 4/3 camera I put mine head to head against an early Zuiko f3.5 and sold the Zuiko as it wasn't as good as the little Vivitar. At one point I had 2, one OM one MD. Can't remember why I sold them now!

Something very cool about that shoe pic. Nice.
That Zuikos sharp!
Oh, yes, it is. :)

Cheers folks, yes that Zuiko is a very good lens, I'd recommend to anybody. Trouble is it's well known to be good and consequently expensive.

<cough>

I'm living life vicariously through this thread ;)

I'll have to think about it. What's saving the 5D for the moment is mostly the Sigma 50mm f1.4 and the other lenses whilst being ho-hum at least have their uses and add to the Canon package... 20-35mm and 70-300mm, both AF lenses. I sold 20mm f1.8, 85mm f1.4, 150mm f2.8 macro and 12-24mm.

I don't know that another lens will sove the problem as I think you're right in that the problem is it's an APS-C adapter and as I said earlier my 28mm works fine so I suspect that 24mm is just pushing it too far.

From what I've read the Minolta 24mm is arguably the best of the bunch and that's partly why I went for it. I think I'll talk to Speedgraphic before dropping £100 on a new adapter and see what they say.

Look carefully with DXo optics. They have a standard and an elite edition. The Elite is double the price and is often needed for the higher end or 'full-frame' cameras. Not sure what they are classing the A7's yet. Anyone know?

Not seen anything official but I'd imagine it would need elite version like the comparable Nikon and Canon D600/6D

Ah yes, totally forgot about that - I know people were moaning that they needed the elite edition for the Olympus EM-1 - I imagine for the A7 you probably would too.

Downloaded the DxO trial and the A7r RAW is not supported yet. Need to fire off an email to them to find out when. I know it will be as they have already done tests.

Update: A7 and A7r will need Elite version.
Looks like most of the RAW stuff is scheduled for January.

Also, loving the ability to get level shots. I had the X-Pro for a while and my shots were always tilted. Tried using the the inbuilt level but that was a bit 'off' as well. Not using the level on the Sony but most of my shots are nice and level. I don't think I've changed how I stand so can only assume that the EVF is really helping.

Ooo, and one from yesterdays walk.

Can anyone recommend a 3rd party battery supplier?

I bought a charger and it came with a free battery and although the spec on the label looks good it must all be a big fat lie as the battery is a fraction of the weight of the Sony battery and lasts about a third of the time :(

Ex pro from amazon :-) there about 80 90% of a good original, but way cheaper

Same as the solitary 3rd battery I have too, weighs b****r all (which is nice) but the camera won't charge it! Charges fine on my Expro charger though. I have 3 Genuine Sony batteries as well so I think I'll be OK!

Hahnel are good, I've had their batteries before.

I read that airplane mode massively extends battery life.

I've not spotted that in the menu. I'll have a look.

Found! And set.

Great tip about airplane mode! Will deffo try that out as waiting several hours for a battery to charge after just a couple of hundred shots is painful :(

Back to the EVF...took the camera out today in daytime for the first time and really struggled with it. Not relevant for those using AF, but I found peaking to be inaccurate and the moire in the image produced made it difficult to get the perfect focus point. I will definitely need to practice more, but at the moment I am missing a OVF. Hmpth.

Using legacy lenses helps, and if you just roll off shots in one continuous stream till the battery dies it'll also help.

I've been on a lens buying splurge tonight, Minolta MD 28 2.8, 50 1.7 and Rollei 50 1.8 all on the way!

Couple of pics from me - still testing to understand my Leica-R lenses but starting to get into it. Both of these with the 50 Summicron:

And this one was accidentally totally out of focus due to pressing the shutter release accidentally, but I quite like it. There's definitely a very interesting bokeh from this lens.

And one that I did focus on:

Cant wait to get mine, its due today, UPS says its out for delivery. Why they cant give me a time slot like DPD do i dont know.

Does anyone else in here have the 35mm yet, the reviews of it seem really positive.

Thought Id try the Sony image data converter. Wish I hadnt. Glad I have LR.

The Sony stuff is poor, so poor in fact that I'm shocked they have it for what should be a flagship product.

I was honestly starting to regret getting the A7 until (helped here) I got DNG/CS5 going.

The next problem for me is time and light. I've had the camera a week and so far I've only taken a couple of flower shots outside of the house on a very dull and windy day due to a combination of comittments and weather and no sky flat light days.

Yeah, never used anything as slow (even Capture NX2 was faster) or as clunky. Only thing I like is it was only 8.5mb to DL

My 35mm is out for delivery today so will be good to get a chance to test AF. Crazy shooting with such a small camera and getting FF results!

Lightroom RAW Tip:

I hate the colour rendering that Adobe applies to RAW files when it imports them into LR5, basically its applying what it thinks is correct. Often making skintones etc yellow. Even worse when the image is shot under artificial light.

My camera picture setting is neutral even though I shoot RAW so replace neutral in LR with whatever preset you use to get the most accurate colours and follow these steps.....

Snap off a few pics, go to import, import an image, go to develop tab, scroll down to camera profile at the bottom, calibration drop down, change that to camera setting as I said mine is neutral.

If you like the look then hold down ALT, you'll see the reset button change to set default. Click update to current settings.

Now whatever you import will have that calibration setting. If you want to reset it just do the same but ALT click reset and change to default.

I have had mine set to camera standard for a long time, landscape is nice as well.

Quick question for anyone with the A7R, what's the file size for RAW and what's the recording duration for video on the cards you have?
Need to work out what size SD cards to get. I have a 64GB but i would prefer to use multiple cards.
