The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I still don't fully understand this partially stacked sensor because some people claim it's much the same as the fully stacked sensor while others show it's more like a normal sensor. Something of interest though to your point is that the Nikon Z8 and Z9 are fully stacked sensors and lack a mechanical shutter completely but the Z6III which came after them and has a partially stacked sensor does have a mechanical shutter. That choice seems in line with the A7V results above suggesting Nikon knew there was a penalty with the electronic shutter so kept the mechanical shutter but the same issue wasn't present on the Z8/Z9.
Z9 sensor readout is 1/270 and z6iii is 1/70. Z9 can get away without a shutter in most cases because of that. Z6iii needs the backup of the mechanical. Z6ii was 1/20 so a big improvement over its predecessor.

I meant to say with mechanical shutter on A1 it doesn't seem to be using the DGO to boost the DR
I always thought the dual gain was where they have a 2nd ‘base’ ISO? If that’s the case then the A1 does.

Interesting reading thanks. Strange that they used the A7V as the 'guinea pig' for this tech rather than the A1 II. Obviously they couldn't do it with the A9III as that doesn't have a mechanical shutter.
yeah they seem to use the a7 series as 'guinea pig' for some stuff.
They introduced lens breathing compensation and animal eyeAF in video on A7iv which caused all the outrage for not updating A1

if I could afford it, I'd still prefer the A1ii

Yeah there's no doubt that overall the A1 II is better than the A7V (as long as you like the new grip) but obviously you pay for it. The A7V has certainly bridged the gap somewhat and I guess for many it'd be difficult to justify the A1 II given the price difference. I'm guessing that fact that the A1 does more calculations per second it will still have better AF than the A7V but with the A7V you're getting 80% of the A1 II for less than half price.

I'm tempted by this lens but what stops me is that I haven't used my Voigtlanders for months. The Sony 40mm f2.5 and the 28mm f2 are all I've used, oh and the GX80 and 14mm f2.5.

Lovely pictures :D

"This is Voigtländer's best wide-angle lens ever."

I have thought about selling all my Voigtlanders and I suppose I should as things change over the years and I'm just not using them. I'm still tempted by that 28mm f2 Voigtlander though but I'd probably buy a Sony 28mm f2 II if they ever get around to making one.

I have cleaned my gear massively myself now.
Clearing out my filters now, I was hoarding so many just in case I needed something.

Also my GAS is mostly under control these days thanks to need to care for family and other personal health issues.
I do swap lenses/cameras but mostly to upgrade than massively change my setups like I used.

Long story short, i think you should clear out what you won't use and spend the money on something you will enjoy.
Really no point hoarding I feel.

I emailed Ffordes and they quoted £1,000-£1,300 depending on condition. They are in good condition but two rounds of sales to Ffordes have involved IMO dodginess... so I'm not sure I want to deal with them again. If I do sell them the money will just go into the general pot as I don't really want anything and neither does The Boss (Mrs WW.) I have Sony lenses I haven't used for a long time too.

Selling has been tough recently to be honest. Not much sells on here.
I have recently sold to MPB. Got very decent prices and with my Sony teleconverters they actually gave me an extra £15 over the quoted price despite my quote was for "As new" condition.
Sold couple lenses on ebay.

I’m about as minimal as I think I can go. I’ve barely used my 20-70mm but I haven’t done any city breaks for a while. I do sometimes think of parting with it, but if I do go in city breaks I’ll ish I had it.

I’ve barely used my 16-35mm this year either but I know I’ll want that for landscapes.

In an ideal world I’d like to add the 24-70mm f2.8 GM2 for studio stuff but I don’t think this will be as good for cities as the 20-70mm.

I am down to 5 lenses now, sigma 20-200mm, 16G, 35GM, sammy85/1.4ii and 500DN.
Will replace 35GM with new sigma 35/1.2ii eventually.

When I shoot for myself, mostly always carry primes. I didn't even take the 20-70mm most of the time.
the zooms only traveled when family/kids are around. In those cases, convenience beats IQ :D

I sold quite a bit of kit last month to fund the A1 ii. Tamron 35-150 hadn't been used since I got the 50-150, likewise the 135mm GM. Also sold the 85mm F1.8 and will likely sell the 85mm GM and buy the Mk2. Next to go will be the 16-35GM which I hardly use to fund the 16-28 F2 when it comes out. If the 100-400 F4 is a rumour that is true that will be hard to resist but that will take a bit of saving and wheeling and dealing. I think I am going to stick with the cameras I have and not get a second A1 ii.

You still got the 50APO?

Yup.

My surviving line up is 35mm f1.4, 35mm f1.2, 50mm f1.2 and 50mm f2 APO. The 35mm f1.4 is still probably the lens I've taken the most pictures with since going digital and I have used them all within the last year but not recently and not as much as I used to. Sony wise I have the 20mm f1.8, 24mm f2.8, 28mm f2, 35mm f1.8 and f2.8, 40mm f2.5, 55mm f1.8, 85mm f1.8 and of course the original 28-70mm f3.5-5.6.

Film era wise I think I have something between 12 to 15, I sold a lot.

Also, I feel the same about Ffordes tbh

First time they give decent prices for some and even some surprisingly good prices for example for the Zuiko 85mm f2 which I didn't sell and got back, they also said some lenses were worthless and kindly offered to dispose of them for me. I declined and got them back. The second batch I sent was the same, some good some not so good and some suspicious and the Zuiko 85mm f2 valuation went from a surprisingly good price to next to nothing. They claimed that the front half of one lens had separated off and it'd cost too much to repair, they'd dispose of it for me. When I got it back it was only the front ring with the labelling on it which had come off. It had been held in place by three spots of glue so I put three new spots on for a cost of free pounds as I already had the glue.

I had a bad experience with Wex and the Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 I sent them. They dropped the quote when they got it and IMO there was no reason too as it was immaculate and so was the box. I gather Wex have a history of doing this.

I've sold quite a bit on here but some stuff just doesn't attract any interest or sometimes offers which wouldn't cover the postage which is why I used Ffordes as they pay the postage. I will advertise some more film era lenses on here at some point as I'm not using them. I will probably keep at least one, probably the Minolta Rokkor 50mm f1.4 MD as I've used that a lot, the rest might end up... I don't know where unless I give them away and pay the postage.

PS.
Another thing about Ffordes. I sent them a Minolta Rokkor 35mm f2.8 MK2 to clean and it came back unusable with completely banjaxed coatings. How they managed that I don't know. Maybe they used white spirit on it. I never managed to replace that lens as they're hard to find in good condition.

That 28mm might match the 50APO nicely then :)

I sent them 3 lenses - a Yashica zoom which I ended up having back because they said it was hazy. I think I sent them the Voigtlander 21/3.5 E mount.... And I definitely sent them the Voigtlander 40/1.4 Classic in M mount [I wish I kept that now] fully boxed with a boxed hood, adapter, CPL filter in 39mm - a full kit. It kept disappearing from their website, and everytime I emailed about it, it would be back up for sale the next day - someone asked us to hold it for them..... I had peanuts for that lens come the end and I don't know what happened to the hood, adapter or filter.

I had a bad experience with WEX recently too, the said my lens had fungus even though another camera shop passed it off as pristine. I sold it to a third camera store who accepted it as like new.

WEX also knocked money off my camera for being grey, which is fair enough, however on their T’s and C’s it says they never knowingly take in grey imports. Based on this and the fact they said a perfectly good lens had fungus I’m reluctant to trust them in the future.

Yes, I remember the issues you had with them. I wasn't happy with Ffordes dating back to that MF Minolta fiasco but as I couldn't think of anywhere else to send it and wanted the kit gone and had tried selling it on here I just did it as at least I got something sort of acceptable for the lot as a whole.

The 28mm f2 and either the 50mm f1.2 (to give me a wide aperture option) or the 50mm f2 would make a good pair but I seem to have changed how I do this hobby. I used to often take more than one lens, sometimes 3 or 4 and I used to MF a lot both with folm era lenses and the Sony mount Voigtlanders but these days it's mostly just the Sony 40mm f2.5 which I have on the A7cII or the Sony 28mm f2 which is on the A7III.

I think I'm coming to the conclusion that they're all like this to one degree or another.

Sometimes I think "Why bother" as selling is sometimes a hassle and sometimes annoying (the nonsense bids, the hassle with Ffordes and Wex) and I/we don't need the money but on the other hand kit in a drawer is just slowly wasting away so what to do with it?

It’s the first bad experience I’ve had with trade in, they’ve all gone very smoothly in the past (y)

The RX1R III has dropped a lot in price already, I guess sales have been poor?

In the past a lot of my stuff has sold on here but just lately it seems a bit more patchy or maybe I've just got kit that fewer people want, I did sell some cameras here recently, A7, GX9, TZ100 and before those X100f and G100 but interest in the film era lenses seems to be low and I've seen others selling Voigtlanders not get a lot of interest.

You [we] need to do what we enjoy Alan :)

The G primes do look pretty good tbh - If I didn't do night skies & I wasn't a bit of a shallow DOF whore then I think the G primes would be the route I'd go. I have been using the CV40/1.2E a bit lately when out with the A7Riii but I've not used my Yashica ML primes on digital for many years now.

It would be a nice back to basics set up for a weekend away or something really. The old digital A7, the analogue Yashica FX3 body and I have the ML primes in 28mm, 35mm, 50mm and 135mm - on paper, a fairly well rounded set up :ROFLMAO: But it depends where the holiday is/was - the Wales road trip, I wanted the best options & IQ I could get so it was mainly the A7Riii, 35GM & 70-180/2.8 that done most of the work. I guess if it was a log cabin, Centre Parcs style weekend then the X100f would do - with the Yashica FX3/28mm if it was summer & sunny :)

So I’ve sent the files off to Bill at photons to photos taken on the A1 with the electronic shutter and as Anand predicted there’s very little difference from those taken with the mechanical shutter in terms of read noise, and therefore dynamic range, to the point he’s said it’s not worth publishing.

And now we have Canon R6iii
Nikon is worst of the bunch because you are stuck with lower dynamic range regardless of shutter mode. Poor implementation really.
Sony you get the best of both worlds and 14-bit RAW. R6iii is not bad either overall.

Married life has had an effect and I want to be quicker so swapping lenses and MF has taken a back seat although I might do more when on my own when Mrs WW is on her travels. I do use wide apertures but f2.8/f2.5 is maybe just enough to blow the background a bit and give a bit of isolation as in the picture I posted on page 2661, not enough for some shots though when trying to keep the shutter speed up.

Heading towards bargain status :D

I can't justify it. I can't. I can't. I can't.

I remember when it came out. I told Mrs WW and she asked if I wanted one :D She's a treasure.
If it was £3k or under I’d have contemplated one IF it had a tilt screen. It’s such a crazy omission that it actually makes me angry

Surely married life means you should go out for photography on your own for some peace and quiet, and use manual focus so you get to spend even longer in the peace and quiet :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

A very useful update. No issues as far as I can see after updating but I have only given it a quick test. Ability to rate on both cards simultaneously very welcome for me although I wish it worked for protect too. Custom and small, extra small focus points too. I may just keep my A1 as it is still extremely capable and I'm not sure I really need to upgrade a second A1 to the A1ii
Did you have to re do your original settings again manually

You should always load your settings onto an SD card before any update so that you can load them back on if they are deleted during the update (y)

Unfortunately despite me encouraging her to do things on her own she wants to do everything with me and doesn't like being left alone. Even when invited out for a meal with one of her mates she insists I go with her so it's just as well that her mates are mine too. But. Her mams diabetes has got worse and she now needs constant care and dialysis twice a week so The Boss now has to go back to Thailand to relieve her sister who lives in Singapore. I can't really go for 6 months and only went for a couple of weeks this year, next year I might go for 3 weeks but really I'd rather stick to 2 weeks. So, when she's away I might do more solo photography.

All this talk of Thailand... A7CII and Sony 40mm.

Meal with mates.

No, they were all the same but obviously had to programme in things like ratings and delete on both cards. I was updating from the previous version. I think there may be a cut off where you lose settings and it may be when the creator app came in and allowed updates from teh phone

The only update I can remember where you lost your settings was the one with the big menu change and also gave you the feature to update from an SD card rather than plugging into the computer and using the Sony software.
