The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

SD cards are backwards compatible. Just get a decent UHS-II for transfer speeds and future compatibility. Also recommend getting them from somewhere with a decent returns policy in case they play up with compatibility.
Fair play, I would only order from a reputable source anyway with something like that anyway so I will see what UHS-II I can find at a decent price/ speed. Thanks :)
If you had waited you could have had my a7riv, just getting ready to sell it.
If I had known someone would just give me one I would have waited;)
Seriously though I doubt I would have been able to afford the iv even if you priced it way below market value. The mk2 I ordered is boxed mint <6000 shutter actuations with the Sony grip and 8 batteries for £600 which was my upper limit really.
Once I've checked it I have a little bit left over for some adapters for my vintage lenses and a SD card after which I'm sure the missus will kill me for spending even that much. Hopefully she will let me take a few pics with it first...

Sorry, didn't realise the R2 wasn't UHS-II compatible.
You might very well be right as I'm not positive it isn't compatible, just what one person mentioned in another forum. Hence my confusion.
I'm gonna try a UHS-II and see what happens, the worst that can happen is I have to return it.

Interesting comparison photos of the RX1 iii against the CR

(And the Leica, chunky thing that…)

The Leica does feel good in the hand though, the RX1 cameras aren't as easy to hold, in fact I've bought a grip for mine.

Well, funnily enough, we're just loading the car this morning......

Did I miss the new thing you'd bought?

Just an A7cII.

So far I think the evf is perfectly ok and that was one of my worries, I've set the vid button to exposure lock toggle and c1 and 2 to drive mode and shutter type and I've set up the fn menu and custom modes and have been through the menu to catch everything that needs setting that I can so it's ready to go. Seems lighter than the A7III and the eye detect seems to work at longer distance. I have a screen protector and spare battery coming today and will need a wrist strap too. I should be ok with it but I do wish it had either a tilting screen or the do it all type. Oh, and this camera should have an option to automatically switch from mechanical to electronic shutter when you need faster than 1/4,000. Panasonic have had this function for a long long time. How hard can it be to add it?

Something should be sold now as I have too many cameras, either the A7 or III should go or even both and probably one of my Panasonic GX's and maybe the TZ100. I'll have to have a think and make my mind up.

Definitely only UHS-I compatible I'm afraid.
Thanks for the confirmation. When I looked they were so cheap I ordered both types, my thought being if the UHS-II one worked I could use the UHS-I in one of my other cameras. I guess now the UHS-II doesn't even need opened/ tested and will get returned.

Nice :) I think the 'C' route is where I will go next. When the time comes.

She’s a Cutie and no mistake. Did you use Animal Detect Toby ?
Thanks. The RX1R II doesn't have animal detect, had to focus the old school way by manually moving the AF point myself ;)

The Sigma 20-200mm looks interesting, especially if the specs are right and it’s under 600g

I've itching to play with my new toy but been busy all day. Maybe tomorrow :D

My battery and screen protector didn't turn up, now due tomorrow.

Can anyone recommend a wrist strap?

I've been using these and I'm happy with them but they've gone from £3.85 to £12.02 and they don't seem with it.

They do seem to be very capable but TBH it's a lot chunkier than I thought. I was hoping it wouldn't feel too far away from my Panasonic camera but it is noticeably chunkier. Less chunky than an A7III though and lighter. Nice to get proper doors on the ports too instead of the bendy rubber ones on the A7III which just get in the way.

I do wish they could fit a 1/8,000 shutter or at least enable auto switching to the electronic shutter and of course fit either a tilting or tilting and articulating screen.

Oh, and while they're at it lets have ISO 50 included in auto ISO for the times when we hit 1/8,000 in good light and have to switch to 50 manually or just let us go to 1/16,000 like my Panasonic cameras do.

I feel as if I'm always complaining. I'm not. Honest :D

I’m not sure I’d recommend mine as you can’t easily buy them… but I have two I swap between on my Cii (and a longer strap, using peak design anchors).

One is a strap that also kinda unfolds into a thin camera wrap. Not sure who makes it, got it in a small camera store in Tokyo years ago…

The second is a home made one woven from paracord that my wife made.

It’s good if you want lightweight/compact - maybe look for paracord wrist straps?

The main thing is that I don't want anything too bulky. Some look waaaay OTT to me. All I really need is something like the above but £12? For that? Even £3 odd seems a bit much :D

I know someone who's very good at making bags and things and I have thought about asking but it seems a lot of effort for such a simple thing.

Yes, the strap my wife made was more effort - but I take pleasure in having a small handmade thing that’s just right. Brings a little extra joy to using the camera.

If having a nice strap on there would also make you smile sometimes using the camera - worth the extra beyond the utility?

I’m not sure I’d recommend mine

Having written this I then thought…. I absolutely would recommend a couple of weeks touring round Japan and then picking up a wrist strap in a camera shop as a souvenir… will push the budget significantly beyond £3 though!

I can recommend the peak design wrist strap but it’s expensive.

Thanks guys. Some look a bit short and I like to be able to get my wrist through and still have a comfortable distance between wrist and camera. I have some short ones and I find them uncomfortable, I feel like I'm being wrist strangled, ditto when they are too rigid. I'll wade through to options and hopefully they'll have measurements I can compare.

I have a few hours free today but it's miserable here with complete cloud cover and that fret like rain hanging in the air so I might not bother going out.

Amazon delivery of battery, card and screen protector delayed again and now due tomorrow.

Could make a strap with paracord and even incorporate a peak design thingy to attach to camera, probably not the cheapest way to do it though. Lots of demos on youtube

Once the strap is on it'll stay on so I don't need any sort of quick release mechanism.

One good thing about the A7cII is that with a small lens it fits easily into my small Lowepro Apex 100 AW. My A7 used to comfortably fit until I fitted a half case and now it's a very tight squeeze and my A7III doesn't fit at all.

I've just spent a few hours exploring Dinorwic Quarry, in the rain....... :ROFLMAO:

That is a bit different to being at 'home' though.

After a miserable morning and had to be home at 9am I only had a three hour window so I couldn't go too far plus the ground is soaking and I didn't fancy trekking too far off into the greenery so really my only choices were the coast or my local disused railway line walk but looking at the weather and more importantly the light I just thought... What's the point? If things improve I could head out this evening or Friday evening, busy all day Friday again.

When I left work I thought I was going to have plenty of free time but it never really happened. Funny how things work out.

Best weather for it, slate looks cr*p in bright sunlight!!

Fully agree. Although lens changes were awkward and very quick :ROFLMAO:

I done sunrise at the lone tree on the water and decided to pop up to Dinorwic for a quick look on the way back - we are staying only about 5/6 miles away - and mainly explored around the middle levels, parking at the Bus Terminus area.

Go back and get up higher - you know the route - allow 5-6 hrs

Did you go through the barracks and see (smell :) ) the goats

Yeah, today was just a general look around. See exactly how big it was and get some idea of what it's like - HUGE! :ROFLMAO: There's that little parking area up the narrow lane behind the top isn't there? I might do another sunrise from there.
Yes, on the map I sent you, it’s very small though and sometimes filled with over nighters, be prepared to reverse for half a mile!!!

I've just registered my new toy with Sony and they gave me three discount codes which can be use for lenses. That's unexpected and nice of them but I don't want any lenses.

Has anyone used these codes and got any sort of decent discount?

Just thought of something.

I haven't been turning IS off when using my A7III on a tripod. I think at one time it was thought that camera IS got confused on tripods and it was better to turn it off. Do you need to turn it off or can cameras cope better with tripods these days?
