The 22/23 Football Thread

Rodgers for me doesnt have long left. No signings (?) this summer and just seems to have cone to the end of the road.
No signings has got absolutely nothing to do with Rogers ? However I do agree he is probably past his 'sell by' date. New motivation needed.
Wonder if Leicester could get Graham Potter ? There I go dreaming again.

I was surprised to see Parker gone as well, I thought he would have had a bit of credit in the bank with the club after promotion but obviously not. I guess Sean Dyche will be an obvious choice as a replacement.

I hope the rumours of Villa wanting Potter to replace SG have some substance...
Not sure Dyche would be the answer. Leave one club that doesn't invest in players to go in to a similar situation all over again.

Can't see why Potter would go to Villa after all the work he's done at Brighton. If he keeps on improving them a job with a bigger club could be possible.

Replacement for Southgate after World Cup failure.

Not sure TV companies or subscribers would pay much to screen or watch the also rans league.
It would be like the Europa Cup and Conference is to the Champions League.
I was going to say the same thing. A 'European Super League' could decimate many European domestic leagues financially. Like them or loathe them, the 'top' teams are the main draw for viewers around the world. You are not getting £billions for Nottingham Forest v Brighton, or Bournemouth v Southampton etc, no matter how good the games could be.

I'm not sure I would be interested in watching Liverpool if the plan to break away had been successful. I hope I'm not put to the test.

Possibly, but I get the feeling Potter would want club football for a few years before considering that. Seem hard to get back into club football for English managers of England.

Southgate wanted international football, and after a few years with Middlesbrough, got in with the U21's.

I obviously hope he is successful in the World Cup and there for many years to come, but even if he has an OK WC, deserves time to get to the next tournament. Can't see anyone standing out to replace him atm.

I said when he was appointsd that we would never win anything with Southgate as manager.
Nothing I've seen since makes me think otherwise.
Tactically inept and the Euro final decisions were just bizarre.

Stop being so damn sensible all the time, forget the bloody money and dream about real football where the fans can identify with their local team and players. Where highly paid millionaires don’t throw themselves on the ground and scream like girls ( sorry, that’s disrespectful to girls ) scream like piglets when someone waves a hand close to their ‘pretty boy’ features.
Well, I did say I was disillusioned with football.

I don't have to dream, I've supported Leyton Orient my entire life.
Loads of downs and a few ups too, one of those was winning 2-0 at
Leicester in the cup. Our manager Jimmy Bloomfield had moved there
along with our star full back Dennis Rofe.

He can't be that bad, as he got England to a final which many have not done before. ;)

I watched a bit of the Leeds v Everton game, it was a bit bad tempered at times, mainly it has to be said started by Everton players. Rodrigo went off injured with shoulder/collarbone problem and didn't look too good. Fingers crossed for him, as he had started the season well.

Chelsea surprisingly lost to Southampton. :$

Forest bet the farm on promotion and only just scraped through. If they go down, the consequences of FFP could be catastrophic!

They brought in their 18th player in the current transfer window ..yesterday,I think, with wing-back Renan Lodi on a one season loan from Atletico Madrid.

They've spent £150 million. Only Chelseas has spent more. What about the Financail Fair Play rules ?

Talking of loyalty, quite sad to see Scott Parker get the sack. One of the hardest tasks is getting a team into the Premier League, and you would have hoped that once you have done that, you would get a bit of time in the Premier League. I understand that there was stuff going on behind the scenes, because of lack of player investment, but even so, it doesn't look good.

It was nice to see Klopp put an arm around him after the 9-0 defeat to Liverpool on Saturday. It's usually a quick shake of the hand..or if you're Tuchel a hard squeeze...:D

That collision with Jordon Pickford didn't look much and I wondered why it felled Rodrigo. It looked pretty innocuous to me. I wondered why he was given a tube of oxygen. I've since learnt that the collision dislocated his shoulder. Very painful.

Some people were trying to make it look like Klopp was being condescending to Parker by putting his arm around him, trying to ****stir. I think Klopp genuinely felt for him. They were chatting before the game too.

Oh goody. Chelsea losing makes my day. They are continually raiding my club for our top players. Kante, Drinkwater, Chilwell and now Forfana. I thought ‘the Russian’ getting out would cut off the money supply but it appears the new Yank owner is even worse.

Not my words but my sentiments. will a promising young man end up 'warming' the bench for a living ?

Chelsea took Drinkwater from Leicester, premier league winner and England international. £35m and deemed surplus to requirements almost from day 1 ?

Chelsea took Ben Chilwell from Leicester £45m and current England international now 'bench warming' after they signed Cucurella for £65m from Brighton.

They have also discarded many others . . . Mo Salah and De Bruyne. What ever happened to Michy Batshuayi £33m from Marseille ?

I think the Forfana puchase raises Chelsea's transfer spending in this window to£275m.

And still Thomas Tuchel is whingeing and bellyaching.

FFS ! he is supposed to be a top manager/coach, work with what you have and improve them.

To become a pro footballer you need a certain amount of arrogance/confidence. I am sure that players like him will be thinking they can force their way into the team. And if not, well a nice pay packet so they never need to work again and they may drop down back to their current level (Leicester) in a couple of years if things dont work out (like Zaha).

Many reasons for bench warming - loss of form (down to player) or simply that the manager wants to play in a different way. Dont forget that to compete at the top you pretty much need 2 players for every position!

Absolutely. That's the kind of man Klopp is and shame on the detractors.

They're really missing Kanté and there's no timeline for his return. A hamstring injury picked up in the Spurs 2-2 game on August 14th caused by overstretching in a tackle.
He had to be helped off by the medical staff. I must Google that. I've never really known exactly what a hamstring injury is and neither why it's called a hamstring ? Nothing to do with ham,I assume :D

Think i'll watch Liverpool tonight, shame Newcastle will be well under strength.

Thought about West Ham v Spurs, but just can't bring myself to listen to all that academy old b*****ks.
All those daft prats crossing their arms across their chest pulling that constipated hard man face look.

Unbelievable finish to the Liverpool game! :$ Newcastle played a good game, and deserved something, but their time wasting caught up with them at the end. They may need to look into their fitness with so many players getting cramp. ;) Harvey Elliott gets better the more he plays. Carvalho doesn't look out of place either when he comes on.

Isak looks quality, and took his goal really well. Unlucky not to get 2md by being slightly offside.

Haaland continues to be a goal machine.

Fairly enjoyable game for a neutral like me, Klopp does like a moan, but not sure why they kept showing it.
Glad Liverpool won after the Newcastle spoiling tactics, they might have been better off just trying to play.

Elliott had a good game and Diaz certainly tried hard, Liverpool just seemed to lack the final ball and touch despite all the possession.
Has Salah played well since the African Nations Cup last season, seems to have gone right off the boil.

Newcastle are a much improved team and the new striker looks like he knows how to finish, good keeper too.
Work in progress, but realistically a top six team this season, can they find the consistency that has always eluded them in the past.

I am sick hearing of hearing about the "press" when did that become the word every commentator and pundit has to say fifty times a match.
Game Management is the other new term that has become popular, time wasting was far more descriptive.

" Glad Liverpool won after the Newcastle spoiling tactics, they might have been better off just trying to play."

It's not just Newcastle. Leeds manager Jesse Marsch complained about Everton's time wasting tactics the other night, specifically taking over 1 min each time to take a goal kick !

Stats from 2021 season:-

55 minutes and three seconds
In this season's Premier League, the average 'ball in play' time is 55 minutes and three seconds - the lowest it has been in over a decade. BBC Sport - using Opta data.

" Game Management "

Another word for cheating, or basically what ever it takes to win (or not lose) the match.

Is top class football a sport ?

depends on your definition ?

Definition 1.
An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

I guess that could qualify ? although the " entertainment " portion is under severe stress when for 40% of the game there is no " ball in play"

Definition 2.
informal
a person who behaves in a good or specified way in response to teasing, defeat, or a similarly trying situation.
"go on, be a sport!"

I think you would have to view current top level football through the 'roseiest' of rose coloured spectacles to call it a sport under this definition.

The 'Beautiful game' is dead. R.I.P

Sorry I've not been around guys, not been well. But it is nice to pop back in and say

5 games, 5 wins - Top of the league :giggle:

Not looking forward to playing City, Harland looks like he's going to score a hat-trick every game. I think he is the final part of Pep's puzzle. City look so good this season.

I wondered where you were especially as your team is doing so well. I think you might be getting a reality check with Manchester City, though especially re. as you mentioned..Erling Haaland . October 19th,I see but at least at the Emirates. So far for Haaland..... 6 appearances... 9 goals (2 hat-tricks) No assists.

What's bothering me is the huge GD being built up by Man City and also Liverpool with that 9-0 win against Bournemouth. 14 GD for Man City,so far with Arsenal and Liverpool on 9 Spurs 6. Spurs aren't a high-scoring team and sometimes it's GD that decides a place in the top four.

I'll be watching Leicester v Man.United now. Just kicked off at the King Power Stadium. That should be a win for United considering the problems at Leicester.

Brendon Rodgers a disgrace, impugning the owners for the direction the club is going. Quoted as saying he wanted 5 or 6 players in the transfer window to " refresh "
the team. He must be aware of the current financial restrictions on the club.
These very same owners who have recently providing £100.million for the new training ground.
These very same owners who are funding the increase of the stadium capacity (awaiting planning permission)

He is not concerned with the long term financial stabilty of the club he is just concerned with his own CV and the threat to his next move upwards to a top six club ?

I think he is inviting a 'Scott Parker' moment. Getting the sack and his contract paid up. Walk away with a sackful of cash before Leicester's poor results 'stain' his record.

Rodgers you are a disgrace.

I disagree - he just wants the club to be competitive. Other clubs around them are spending money and strengthening - if Leicester dont then they are at risk from the drop.

Whats the point in a bigger ground when you play in the championship?

Also why should he carry the can for the poor results when he knows his squad is under strength.
I watched the match last night and it was pretty grim viewing, very lacklustre display.
Found the cash to give 35 year old Vardy a 2 year contract, didn't see the point in that last night, saying that they were all pretty poor.
Man Utd were hardly impressive either, some nice interchanges, but no final pass or ball, just gave away possession time and again.

Brendon Rodgers is a disgrace.

Last night he said: "This isn't the club that it was a couple of years ago," Rodgers said,

Did the man sleep walk through the Pandemic ? The owners family have financially suffered more than many due to their wealth coming from duty free shops. Most of the World
stopped flying for 2 years. However he still goes in print saying he wants 5 or 6 players to 'refresh his squad. I think he thinks he's at Chelsea and he is Thomas Tuchel ? Even me with my tiny brain knew that was totally unrealistic.

Rodgers is supposed to be a top coach ?
In terms of set-pieces, it's not only corners that the Foxes have struggled with this season. Leicester have conceded 21 goals from dead-ball situations in 2021/22 - the highest in the Premier League and the third highest in all of Europe's top five leagues

Rodgers solution ? he blames the players and persuades the club to spend money they can ill afford on 6'2" Boubakary Soumare and 6'6" Jannnik Vestergaard. Both have been a waste of money and rarely get a game. They want to unload them now, but nobody seems to want them.

FFS, Coach the players, Kolo Toure is a coach there, a ex top class centre back, find a defensive system and make it work.

Toure was part of the Invincibles, he should have a pretty good idea about defending, he had excellent training himself.

Just realised you said you hadn't been well and I should have acknowledged that in my post above but was rushing as Leicester v Man-U game was into its 8th minute and overlooked that rushing Hopefully, you're ok now.

Edit after reading WCMUT just now. That's been a nasty infection.

So Jamie Vardy is already taking 'dogs abuse' from Man Utd fans ref the ' Wagetha Christie ' case during the match on thurs evening and Rodgers substitutes Vardy on 87 mins

exposing him to the full venom of the utd fans. Man management of the highest order ? :wacky: tactical nous ? or more likely 'scoring points.'

Would that be the same Jamie Vardy who has taunted visiting fans for years with his antics?
For the daft money you agree players get a bit of stick won't hurt them i'm sure.

I have a lot of time for Eddie Howe who seems to be doing a magnificant job at Newcastle however I think he let himself down after the loss to Liverpool.

Newcastle were 'roundly' booed by 'pool' supporters due to their time wasting tactics. When questioned Eddie said (I cannot remember the exact words ) to
paraphrase it, 'Other teams supporters booing us is good, we come here to win by whatever means possible.' Really Eddie ? you may compete with that ethos
but you do not need to be saying it. Eddie, you are better than that.

Just watched a great game..Everton v Liverpool. The 0-0 reusult was a fair one. In the last minute of the 6 minutes extra time Mo Salah hits the post but only after Pickford got fingertips to it. It was really a game of the goalies with Pickford saving more times than Alisson. He was so good he got man of the match by the pundit at Goodison Park..Steve Mcmanaman. That's put Liverpool 5th with 9 points with Brighton one place above with 10 pts. and they play Leicester at home tomorrow so will probably widen the gap. Liverpool were good but not in top gear.

Now to listen to Spurs v Fulham So 3rd (Spurs) v 7th. talkSport.

It was enjoyable, but more endeavour than skill on show, Liverpool look very under par.
I said after the last match that Salah looks out of sorts and again did virtually nothing of note.
Good point for Everton and compared to others near the bottom of the table looked a much better prospect.
Very open match, both keepers made good saves helped by some poor finishing.
Best chance I thought fell to Davies, if his left foot wasn't only for standing on he would have easily scored.
Everton will improve I'm sure, but Liverpool fans must be concerned about the trip to Napoli
