The 22/23 Football Thread

Really ? I didn't know that.

You'd think after a while that they'd realise it doesn't work. Well,...Lol..if they win then it works..if they lose..maybe God was busy and not paying attention or he wasn't in....:D

Plenty of examples in athletics.

well more shocking was the standard of refereeing. Taylor was the mom for spurs with his 2 assists! Romero should have been off for his antics. Hard to blame tuchel when your team has been robbed like that.
Agreed, while a draw was good for us, Chelsea should have had that wrapped up, but the fouls were pretty obvious to see.

I did watch MoD2 and they seem to agree that when Romero got hold of Cucurella's hair is was bordering on, or could well have been, classed as violent
conduct.I'd agree with that,too.

It looked to me as though Bentancur fouled Havertz but apparently, re VAR, there was too much time between that and the following Spurs goal by Hojbjerg to have affected it. Also, re that goal there were claims that Richarlison, who was in an offside position..by a country mile, blocked the view for Mendy but what was telling was that Mendy did not react..he didn't complain, which suggests he had a full view. MoD2 also got their technology on the job and overlayed a triangle representing Mendy's view to Hojbjerg and it was clear. It was deemed that Richarlison was not interfering with play.

Anthony Taylor is regarded as one of the best and has a place in the forthcoming World Cup. Ex Ref Keith Hackett was asked to name the refs in ascending order of competance from 19-1 .No. 1 was Michael Oliver with 8/10 and behind him Anthony Taylor with 7.5/10. I'm sure if another retired ref was asked the order would be different.

That last minute goal headed by 'Arry bounced off the knee of Reece James. It looked to me as though it was going the wrong side of the post. I think it's gone down as an own goal. My verdict is that Chelsea were the better team. It got better for Spurs in the second half because Conte changed to a 4-4-2.(I thinkl) Richarlison played a key role in causing problems to Chelsea's defenders off the ball by his positioning.

Another development is that Tuchel,it seems, has suggested that the FA don't allow Taylor to referee any games that Chelsea are involved in because ,as they see it, history shows that he's biased against them. He may well pay for that remark. I assume the FA will fine both of them in addition to touchline bans re the altercations.

They meet again in the Premiere League on February 25th.

Re the clash of the managers. What I saw ..at the end..was Conte putting out a hand to Tuchel who took it and must have put pressure on,not letting go because Conte immediately looked down at their hands in anger.

Another win by Spurs earlier..just. Wolves deserved a point. Poor first half by Spurs. I got a bit worried watching Jiménez and Traori after they were brought off the bench..especially Traori. He had three Spurs players around him as he neared the Spurs goal out on the right wing .Spurs offered £15m for him at the start of the year ( Jan)but he went to Barca on loan until the end of June. Barca didn't action the option to buy him (£30m euros) . Wolves want £25m. The last offer from Spurs was £20m after that £15m bid was rejected and that's the last offer so far but Spurs are still interested and the window doesn't close until 2300 on September 1st. He'd be a great addition to the squad.

Traori seems a good idea, and he can be exciting to watch, but his actual impact with regards to goals and assists is very poor. I think there are reasons he's normally an impact sub, rather than a consistent starter, and even then, he still doesn't play much.

It is a pity, as he can be exciting to watch, and can go past people like they are not there. Every so often. ;)

What a game that was at St James' Park earlier today. An absolute thriller, as they say. Newcastle 3 Manchester City 3 but not until Newcastle lead 3-1. A fantastic goal from a free kick by Trippier who actually got a straight red for a foul on Debruyne but the ref was the far side of the two with Debruyne in the middle so it looked worse than it was. VAR told him to check the pitch-side monitor which he did and withdrew the red and gave a yellow instead.

Also, Leeds beat Chelsea 3-0 at Elland Road.

My predictioin at season's end. Manchester City top..mainly because of Haaland. Liverpool second ..I'm not sure if Arsenal or Spurs will be in 3rd place but they're my top four. I'm really impressed with Arsenal especially Jesus . Almost, if not the, equivalent to the arrival of Haaland at Man City.

As a Wolves supporter Traori has been good for us but his end product is pretty poor - certainly not good enough for top teams.

He is like a whippet though

Different subject but impressed with Arsenal this season, maybe not genuine Prem league champions material but definitely on the right road to solid top 4.

Where are all those Arteta haters shouting for his head now?!

Yup, here, he certainly has changed things around. Mentally we look better and the new players are awesome! Time will tell but looking good at moment

Heads-up.

Manchester United v Liverpool. Kick off at 8.00pm Sky Sports (Main event) or for the poor, like me..talkSport :)

They played with determination.A good team effort. One of the commentating team said that Ten Hag made them run 13km extra in training after the 4-0 defeat by Brentford. If I heard correctly, whoever it was,Jonathan Pierce,Danny Murphy or Stewart Pearce, said stats showed they'd run 13km less than Brentford...lol. Liverpool didn't really get going.

Goodness me. I've just looked at the table. Arsenal top with 9 pts, Manchester United 14th with three points and two places below them Liverpool with 2 points from three games. Two draws and tonight's loss. Maybe I ought to revise my prediction which I posted that had them second at the season's end.. I think Manchester City,Arsenal and Spurs will take the top three places. No idea now who will get fourth spot. Having said that it's a bit early to be predicting but I'm sure Manchester City will be in the top three and Arsenal are going great guns and will continue to do so imo and Spurs under Conte and with 9 days left of the window plus the January window to go should be there, too.

Very well done to Rashford well chuffed for him tonight, and well done Ten Hag to drop the two has beens now get rid of them both plus Fred.

Yes, it will do him the world of good. Just what he needed. The commentators thought he might have been offside,it was very close but given. Maybe he won't go to PSG after all.

I'll bet Ronaldo didn't think he'd spend so much time on the bench. Knowing him he'd probably be expecting to be treated like the Messiah and the Second Coming....lol.

I think Newcastle might be in the mix too, good manager, passionate fans and cash available if required..
Relegation who knows at this stage, possibly Bournemouth, Leicester and Moyes looks like he has run out of ideas at West Ham.

I think Newcastle are on a no-rush building exercise so will probably end up a few places higher than the 11th they finished at last season. I'm really pleased for the fans, they deserve to have finally got rid of Ashley. Eddie Howe is after Maddison. In the region of £40m has been rejected and Brendon Rogers doesn't want to lose him and are negotiating a new deal with an improved offer on his current of £100,000 a week. At least Jamie Vardy has signed a new contract which will take him to 2024.

Yes.. a shaky start for West Ham. I'm surprised at Leicester's poor start, too

By the way. Just 10 mins into second half in the EFL Cup game with Everton just 1-0 up on.....er Fleetwood. That's where Vardy came from to join Leicester.

Looking ominous, top seven will likely be in any order
Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal, Man Utd and Newcastle.
Only Brighton and Leeds splitting them up now and don't think that will last.

Cambridge game was interesting!! Concede a soft goal after 15 seconds. They get a player sent off on 10 mins. Then 1-1, 1-2, 2-2, 2-3 (keeper howler), 3-3 (hat trick for our striker), 4-3 to seal a win (against the team bottom of league!). Can’t take much more of that!!!

They had just the tonic they needed today - a trip to Villa Park, the place where winless runs go to die. As a Villa supporter, I think Gerrard's days and numbered already...
I listened to that game..we don't have Sky but BT Sport . Gerrard does seem to be struggling but a pundit said he needs time to settle in and get the team in his own image,,so to speak.Eight months obviously isn't enough time. I see Mings is still there with a few days of the transfer window open so I assumne he's staying..for this season, at least. I mentioned in a post a few back that there seemed to be friction there. He's no longer the captain .

My Spurs won but Nottingham Forest were, actually the better team. They're finishing let them down. Also had to listen to that, too on Five Live. Harry K missed a penalty. Dean Henderson is a brilliant goalie and, if I recall correctly what the commentator said, he's saved four penalties and also made excellent saves in open play and was even muted by the commentator and his pundit ,Clinton Morrison, (I forget who the commentator was) that he might be in the frame to go to Qatar.I like listening to Clinton,he must be the most courteous, friendly pundit to have alongside a commentator. They must be delighted when they're told he's going to be alongside therm for the afternoon. With some, it's almost a game of one-upmanship and digs at each other.

This Leicester city supporter is extremely disillusioned with football.
In august 21 in a friendly match Wesley Forfana suffered a fractured fibula & ankle + knee ligament damage. He spent the entire 21 season out. Leicester gave him the best of everything to aid his recovery. Earlier this year he signed a new 5 year contract and went public with his love for the club after their support through his recovery.
Now it appears he is going to Chelsea ? How many f***ing players do Chelsea need. ?
The Foxes have attempted to retain him and turned down increasingly larger bids.
Then Forfana decides he wants Chelsea’s £200,000 a week, throws a ‘strop’ and stops turning up for training. This appears to be doing the club no favours and they are seemingly forced to let him. go.
The quicker the top 6 clubs own all the top players, remove most of the competition
from all other clubs, everyone loses interest and we can all watch womens football the better. Bring it on, I cannot wait.

I would say it does Leicester a big fat 70m favour!!! Not a bad return on investment, they can simply do what they have done before, pick up a replacement for 10/15m and sell him to City in a few years for 90m!

Worse things happen lower down - At Cambridge we cant afford long contracts so most players come on a 2 year deal - they do well but we have a lot out of contract in under a year and its in their interests not to sign a new one so they can leave for free.

Rodgers for me doesnt have long left. No signings (?) this summer and just seems to have cone to the end of the road.

Not sure what's going on at Leicester, have the owners stopped investment.
I saw Vardy was given a new long contract, looks a bit much at his age and definitely not as sharp now.
Also what's happened to Thielemans, saw him a year or so ago and looked very good.
Does he want away or just lost form?

My tip as I said above for relegation along with Bournemouth, maybe Forest to fill the other spot?

Forest bet the farm on promotion and only just scraped through. If they go down, the consequences of FFP could be catastrophic!

Not the first team to go all in and fail.
Can be a big mistake to try and buy your way to staying up.
Big money contracts that still need paying after relegation

Still you can always go into Administration, rob all your creditors including small local businesses then come back with funds replenished.

Leicesters owners wealth comes primarily from duty free shops.
The pandemic practically stopped World travel and obviously adversly affected duty free sales.
The owners have recently funded a new World class training ground
The club is waiting on planning permission to enlarge the King Power stadium to 40,000 seats.
Given the above I can certainly understand 'tightening of the purse strings'

P.S " I saw Vardy was given a new long contract, looks a bit much at his age and definitely not as sharp now. "

The club are showing their appreciation of a 'club legend' with a new contract to reward his loyalty, he could have moved on a couple of times.
Supporters (well me anyway) would hope that players could also show a little more loyalty, remember Forfana signed a new 5 year contract just a few months ago !

Yeah, we're still paying for it. $40m fine and relying on freebies and loans to keep going.

Oh, and can we have Charlie Kelman back please. :D

I hope not, Charlie looks like a very good prospect, certainly knows how to finish.
Got a midfielder on a year's loan from Ipswich who looks very good too.

Early days yet, but looks like we might have a decent season, must be due some luck soon.
Nearly went to the wall and saved at the last minute by a wealthy fan and his friend.
Got back on a decent footing and then Justin Edinburgh our manager died tragically at 49.
Crowds are rising too, average this season is over 7000 and not played anyone with much away support.

Which is why we want him back. That said, we've have plenty of strikers who have ripped it up in league 1/2 but not managed it in the Championship so who knows.

Think you had one of our ex strikers for a while, Macauley Bonne?

still got him. Didn't exactly hit the heights and was loaned to Ipswich last season. Publicly declared he wanted to stay there permanently but they haven't come a knocking yet. Scored a few times for us in pre-season, but currently warming the bench.

You would hope they get any player the best treatment. Contracts are not only to try and keep players for a length of time, but to also enhance their value should anyone want to buy them.

No player should refuse to train or play whilst they are under contract, and heavy fines should follow imho. I'd be wary of buying any player that did that, because he can obviously do it again.

Talking of loyalty, quite sad to see Scott Parker get the sack. One of the hardest tasks is getting a team into the Premier League, and you would have hoped that once you have done that, you would get a bit of time in the Premier League. I understand that there was stuff going on behind the scenes, because of lack of player investment, but even so, it doesn't look good.

I was surprised to see Parker gone as well, I thought he would have had a bit of credit in the bank with the club after promotion but obviously not. I guess Sean Dyche will be an obvious choice as a replacement.

I hope the rumours of Villa wanting Potter to replace SG have some substance...

Resurrect the European super league. Let the ‘top six’ b****r off and play each other plus the other state funded teams and teams that are exempt from FFP until they are sick of the sight of each other.
Let the rest of the Premier league have a ‘proper‘ competitive league among themselves.
Well, I can dream can’t I.

Not sure TV companies or subscribers would pay much to screen or watch the also rans league.
It would be like the Europa Cup and Conference is to the Champions League.
