The 2014 Season F1 Thread

The caterham doesn't look very aerodynamic, surely the have enough of a wind tunnel to see that big flat (even if it looks a little tapered) bit behind the nose is gonna slow them down?

They also said that if there's no improvement they will consider leaving f1, unless some engines break I can't see them doing much better with that as a starting point

I'm guessing they're trying a bit of both. Trying to force some air under and some over the tub rather than committing yourself to one or the other as most of the other teams seem to have done. I agree that i'm not sure it looks that aerodynamic but maybe they think the trade off is enough to risk it.

Should see the Marussia tomorrow to see if either of them have a chance of moving up a bit. They have a decent chance of a point this year from break downs.

Being 10th probably helped the budget for marussia and they have Ferrari engines this year too, I'm assuming they will be helping them out a little bit as they'll want bianchi to move up, Alonso and raikkonen are getting on a bit now and won't be around for much longer...

Its looking like a race between the ant eaters vs the hoovers with a surprise fork truck
Its going to be very interesting come australia

Day 2 testing seems to have brought no suprises other than the shaped wishbones of the McLaren that want to be a beam wing, will have to wait while they race to see if it works
Reno have trouble with electrics in the storage area which seems a little reminisant of last season No webber now to try out the fix for red bull, pity Recardo
Roll on March

Although the media claims that the majority of teams and fans are opposed to the last race having double points Bernie is reported to have sent a letter to all teams championing the idea of the last three races having double points
I hope the teams grow balls and send Bernie a letter (not that he will take any notice)

Sky News reporting

Michael Schumacher is slowly being brought out of an induced coma following last month's skiing accident, his manager says.

The seven-time Formula One champion has been in a Grenoble hospital with severe injuries since the accident on December 29.

Fingers crossed for Michael S. Been comatose for a long time but I know the brain is a wonderful organ and a law unto itself!

Day 2 Jerez reno solve electrical problem
Day 3 Jerez Reno not solved electrical problem
Smacks of the alternator tale of 2013 not to mention Kers
Had a french car once wired by plumbers not rushing to buy another

From the man himself bigging up the coming season
"People want noise - something special, that's what F1 is all about," said Ecclestone. "Now we have quiet engines and nobody on the track." (in relation to Jerez)
Really makes me want to watch this years F1
Lets add fuel conservation and tyre conservation to make it really special
Good job I am a hardend F1 fan I cant see Bernie attracting more with speeches like this

One very valid point that he did make was that if the teams really were concerned about fuel efficiency they would vastly reduce the number of trucks that follow the circus around Europe - the race cars' fuel is relatively negligible compared to the fleets of artics.

I think you may have to blame mosley (Bernies mate) for the moving towards the perceived green image of F1
Do you honestly think the teams want fuel restrictions and plastic tyres ??
Woudnt it be nice to just go racing instead of this artifically interesting ish going round a circuit
The engineering to get round these limitations is fantastic and holds my interest more than the actual racing

Taken from an interview with Nico Rosberg on the Fromula1.com website

"Q: Will we see that the winning driver is the one who is smart enough to go slow?

NR:
It will play a part, yes. Of course a racer always wants to go flat out, but I also find it a challenge to get the most out of this new situation. It’s a fact that in the last few years we weren’t always going flat out - the last time I can remember that was probably 2006 - so we are pretty conditioned lately to taking care of this, taking care of that. I think what we have now is a tribute to the direction that the world has taken. We all have to be more thoughtful. We are a sport but we also have to keep those things in mind. When I did almost 100 laps (on Wednesday in Jerez) I used probably one third less fuel than a year ago - so that is a good direction."

So the last time they raced flat out was 2006!!!!!!!!

David

Anyone seen this footage
Different sound yes Quiet I will leave that up to you

Is this the same person that didnt want the formula engines changing I despair

Ecclestone also reckoned that 2014 would help rekindle interest in F1, with the arrival of new turbo engines set to deliver more exciting racing.

"It is timely developments like these that keep Formula 1 at the forefront of sustainable and relevant technology," explained Ecclestone.

this statement is in relation to falling F1 viewers, not us apparently we are 2% up Germany has a 10% down but its all due to Vettal domination (not all me thinks)

Needs to be looked in more details over the season as the first half was pretty open, its after the summer break and the switch back to the older tyre construction that Vettel dominated. I didn't watch any less due to him winning. I think the move from free to air to a pay TV model is starting to hurt, although Germany still has F1 on RTL because for races when the BBC wasn't there live, I moved my old Sky dish to point at a different satellite and use the RTL pictures, but the BBC 5 Live commentary. Works well and usually pictures and sound are in reasonable sync.

We are now looking at spicing up qualifying
Because you have to start on the plastic tyres you set the best time on in Q3 teams have been sitting Q3 out or not trying to preserve plastic
So now one of the ideas is that you start on the tyres you did the best time on in Q2 and pirelli give you an extra set for Q3 (to be handed back) so everyone will race for pole like they used to do before plastic tyres
It cant only be me that thinks hard compound wear away tyres arnt the way to go in F1
Cant they just race in the true sense ?
How long before handicaps start or is Bernie enough

Haha!

Its the balance between a sport and an entertainment. Its obvious that the F1 bosses are thinking its more of an entertainment, so expect to see reverse grid races, loop the loops, shortcuts, weapons and telephone voting for 2015, followed by Celebrity Pitstop on the red button.

F1 has been a moving set of advertisements for years! Hasn't really been much of a sport since the manufacturers came in. Can't help watching it when it's on free to view but refuse to pay for the Sky package to get it on there. These days, the politics and engineering sides are far more interesting than the processions races.

Yup thats where I stand as well
Just read the penalty rules for the 5 power units allowed (again), which of course are split into 6 componants, I think they want more people to watch but not understand just gawp

Well I'm looking forward to the opening round, not least because I'll be out there. Will be interesting to see how many cars finish the race. I'm also hoping to get into the paddock (calling in a favour from a former workmate) for a closer look at the cars..

As for Michael, all we can do is wait and see. The press will speculate about anything if they think it'll sell copy.

It might not look exactly like that as they have just signed on petrobras as a sponsor too, to develop new fuel for 2015.

As I understand it petrobras is on the rear wing endplates, helmets and overalls
Renault still look a bit troubled in Bahrain lets hope they get it sorted or a thirdish of the grid will not be in the running

Ohhhh, I just read it quickly on the bus somewhere about Williams. I hope it takes Renault a while to sort it, I'd like a repeat of silverstone and Vettel getting home a bit early! Just wondering where whitmarsh is gonna go now and also, if mclaren will have a title sponsor any time soon.

I think you are right, for straight line there nose doesn't look too bad. But in Yaw, I think that it will disturb a lot of the airflow to the underbody

Could be protests in the air at Melbourne
Maclaren for its axle beam wing and Ferrari for its lightweight turbo cover
Elsewhere Mr E looks to have a grueling time with cvc now a judge has branded him as a liar that paid a bribe Its looking like he needs a houdini style exit out of this mess thats brewing
