The 2011 Slimming Thread!!

My exercise/weight loss scheme has hit the buffers :(

I put on half a stone when I was on holiday, managed a week back in the gym and a drunken night out in some very bad shoes gave me blisters so bad I couldn't exercise for a week!!!

Managed another week or so in the gym, even managed to run 5K in under 30mins (just to see if I could) but the following week after 6 mins jogging at 10KMH on a treadmill my left calf muscle just "went", that was last Monday and I'm still really struggling now :(

I think I'm going to start the gym again tomorrow but just work on resistance stuff (something's got to be than nothing right??)

Can say that I'm seriously losing motivation now!!!

Don't give up, keep going on the healthy eating side of things. I'm no expert but it sounds a bit like you might be pushing yourself a bit too hard on the exercise front. Why don't you try swimming and give your calf time to heal.

Cheers Lisa :)

I'm now "fit" again (relatively speaking) and I've changed the way I exercise.....

I do Monday to Thursday, moderate to heavy upper body weights followed by 10 mins of cardio (x-trainer or interval running on a treadmill).

I've also started taking protein shakes after my workouts and an instant oats one mid-morning to stop me pigging out on rubbish.

So far I've lost a few lbs and a couple of people have asked if I've lost weight (although they might just be polite and/or I looked like a sumo wrestler before  ) I've noticed my work shirts are also getting a little tigher around my arms and chest and my trousers are getting a little looser.

Something's happening so that's gotta be a good thing

I have always been bigger than I would like, never going through a skinny phase growing up, I have had a baby and really struggled with my weight creeping up and up. I used to sit around 65 -70kg but im now 75kg. I am aiming to lose 10kg to feel better about myself and feel much better in my clothes etc.

On saturday I started a new way of eating. I have cut out nearly all the carbs I was eating i.e. bread, chips and potatoes and replaced breakfast with fruit and creme fraiche, lunch with cabbage soup (with a dollop of creme fraiche to make it bearable) and dinners with meat/fish and salad. So far Ihave had the odd treat but nothing like I had before. My worst habit was eating my little ones left overs, something I NEVER thoght I would do!

Im going on holiday on Friday to Spain, and I'm gooing to limit my carb inntake and swim as much as possible, so hopefully I won't put too much weight on!

Hacker, your photos are an inspiration and well done to others too!

Anna, how are you getting on with lowering carbs? I am attempting the same here.

That's encouraging although I'm so not built for running (size 13 flat feet for starters  )

I also put on about 1/2 st while on holiday so that hasn't helped matters..... building back up to doing 4 lunchtimes a week in the gym and if this weather ever sorts itself out I may go out cycling/skating in the evening too.

Alternatively, my gf will be moving in with me soon and I think we're going to by an Xbox with Kinect and I reckon if I get on one of the dancing games (don't laugh but I used to do a bit of podium dancing "back in the day" at some raves  ) for 30+ mins that's help things too.

The 5K in 6 seems to have done the trick for you

Totally forgot to drop back in on this thread.

Don't convince yourself you aren't built for running. I did that. Long back, short legs and most of my body mass above my waste.

If you want to give the running a go, get yourself along to a local running shop and get you gait assessed for some suitable shoes. They won't take the **** and this way you'll minimise the risk of injury.

Encourage you GF to run with you too (if she doesn't already), you'll spur each other on.

Best of luck.

Russ, I have issues on treadmills too. Almost the exact same thing happened to me, calf went without warning. It took a couple of weeks rest to sort it out and some serious stretching. Luckily I also have free access to a physio at work too.

I find the problems with treadmills, despite being really boring, is that the speed is fixed by the equipment. If you are running naturally outside and your body senses a slight issue or niggle it will slow you down a bit naturally and by dint of inclines, crossing roads etc you will get a bit of variation in speed. Also, I find treadmill running is very uniform and repetitive and get more tired and niggley than when running outdoors.

I'm doing P90X and the weight is definitely coming off.Especially in the first month as the nutrition side of it is high in protein and low in carbs.Done a workout tonight which is the called the rest week but still have you sweating like crazy.Really recommend giving it a try if you are serious about losing weight and getting lean.

Excellent progress Pat. The walk/run program you are following is very similar to what I started with. It won't be long before you can just run, don't rush it though and risk injury (speaking from bitter experience).

I can remember the first time I did a straight 5km (3.2m) run, I was euphoric. I think I managed it in 34 minutes. Personal best over that distance is 26'35" now. However I'm trying to get my distance up more at the minute.

I personally use Endomondo. iPhone, Android & Blackberry versions are available and it works with Garmin kit also (which I use). There is a massive worldwide community and it is great for tracking your progress.

Best of luck with the training and keep up the good work.

I had a stroke 2 years ago when i was forty and have went from 15 stone to 18 stone and i just cant seem to lose the weight , not allowed to do heavy gym stuff because of blood pressure and possible return of stroke....ideas welcome from all who can help

Back again!!!! after getting the all clear from the neuro and cardio consultants I took on alot of the advice shared here......

started to walk every morning 6-10 miles before breakfast (if i am hungary i take a small black coffee)

Cut down carbs....eating up to six times a day proper unprocessed food ( small treat on saturday night)

2 glasses of red wine every night.......(recommended by Cardio Consultant;))

WAS 18 STONE NOW.......................17 STONE........ALL INSIDE 6 WEEKS...

Good luck to all trying to reduce their size........and thanks to all with the graet tips...

I started a diet in june and lost nearly a stone within a month. However willpower failed me, I work all week 9-5.30 and until 4am on friday nights and always end up getting junk food.

Need to get back onto it and find the willpower. Currently weigh 17stone at 26 years old but Im a big lad anyway.

My meals mainly consisted of porridge/fruit for breakfast, chicken salad at lunch and then brown pasta with a healthy sauce, or chicken based meals with veg.

I do a lot of walking/cycling anyway so excersise isnt the issue. Its just the work hours and so on.

Target is to be around 14 stone again and avoid the 4am diet as I call it :)

Hello! Well after a week of no carbs before my holiday, and two weeks of eating sensibly on holiday I have lost a stone in three weeks!

I'm now introducing small amounts of bread but no carbs after lunchtime ideally.

I really need to exercise more and managed to ride my horse and lead my niece on a walk so as long as I keep it ip I'm hoping for gradual weight loss.

I'm now the same weight I was when I fell pregnant 2 years ago.

How are you going on?

Can I join in now, I'm trying to lose weight but more so drop dress sizes and tone up so I'm going to put weight on iyswim

Just had my appointment at the gym and I want to reduce my body fat % and raise my metabolic rate. I also want to lose inches

So I start today and have a review in 3 months at the gym.

Here goes :D

Cut all carbs out before holiday, had some while away. Not to fussed over it as it was all inclusive and those little cakes were soo nice.
Back home now and back to work like you bread will be in there but none after 1pm.

Kelly, did you go to gym? I love my gym time, I am to go at least twice a week and once a week swim if possible.

Good luck with your goals.

Great way to increase your metabolism is to have green tea, either as a drink or in tablet form from the health shop. Obviously adding cardio helps. Some other advice, I would recommend a protein meal in the morning, this has been shown to boost metabolism. The point in the post below about not having carbs late on is excellent advice especially to lower body fat.

I would also advice you to read about the glycaemic index, you may already know about it but it basically is essential in my opinion at understanding carbohydrates and how to fit them in to your meals.

Hope that helps :)

That sounds really promising.

I am worried about the advice from your consultant though IMHO.

Red wine has always been labelled as being good for the heart because of its antioxidant properties but two glasses that regularly cannot be good for you in anyway.

Firstly you are pumping a lot of 'empty' calories in to your body, and then sleeping on those calories, your body is then increasing insulin levels before sleep and this promotes fat storage, this could then ultimately increase your risk of future heart attack/strokes especially if your body has the tendency to deposit fat in your artery linings.

Secondly, the alcohol in the wine means your liver spends every night converting alcohol, this reduces its efficiency to perform normal body maintenance functions. This also means you have a higher tendency to develop fatty liver disease amongst other problems.

Thirdly, a lot of people will then start relying on wine's relaxant properties to sleep and may eventually become dependant on the wine to be able to fall asleep, it also has other effects on the brain.

I acknowledge that 2 glasses a night isn't a lot by most peoples standards, but I don't think it is fitting with your goals personally and certainly not healthy. I feel it will hinder your excellent progress quite significantly.

This is all just my opinion though and I hope I don't offend you by saying that! I don't think there is anything wrong with a glass every other night. Or you could drink cranberry juice instead ;)

Not offended one bit, Thanks for your input.....I understand what you are saying regarding the red wine, and you are quite right in what you say.

I have really cut out the wine., starting with "SOBER SEPTEMBER"

I agree completely. You can get the antioxident effect just as readily from drinking grape juice but with giving your liver so much hard work to do.

Yes, I have been going twice a week for an hour's swim and once a week to Aquafit (or hell on earth as we call it, the instructor works us very hard). I'm limited to what I can do due to a condition in my hip and thigh so swimming and walking is it basically. I've been on a walking challenge for 16 weeks which finished today and hopefully I've reached my 1.75million steps target, I'll find out later when I log in to the system.

Thanks for the advice. I don't need to change my diet really. I've got a pretty good one as my husband plays rugby so he's trained me for years about my food and drink. I just need to cut out the alcohol and change my exercise. As above in my previous post, I'm limited to what I can do and while the walking challenge has helped toned my legs a bit, I need to tone and trim everything else which is where the swimming's going to work. My resting calorie burn is 1,833 kcal a day so it's not too bad and my skeletal muscle is 29.7%.

Edited to add - I'm not really a fan of green tea. Tried it but couldn't get past the first few mouthfuls!

Yeah it can be hard to stomach too much green tea, it can get too much. I tried the green tea tablets from Holland and Barratts and saw great results!

Thought I would post a quick update as we slowly approach the last 3 months of the year!
It has been really fun and motivating until now to keep up to date and share progress and tips with all the great members of TP :)
I think we can all say we have learnt a lot!

Here is my update:

Current weight: 68kg
I'm still 5'8" and male :D
Body Fat: 15%

I am glad I have managed to meet both my goals up till now. Will work hard to maintain my progress and health!

I get on really well with it. :) Scoff my face with yummy food, just seem to have removed fats and heavy going sauces and everything makes a difference. Cut out crap like tons of chocolate and sweets too :) still got to remember to treat myself though. x Well done with yours, that's amazing!

A lot of celebrity regimes diet Monday-Friday and do what they want at the weekends, I don't have the discipline to do this.

But you should definitely treat yourself one day a week, for sanity's sake!

Remember to make sure you are getting your good fats too! Nuts, Oils, Fish, etc.

Sorry if I am teaching you to suck eggs!!

Well done on your progress
