The 2011 Slimming Thread!!

13st 7lbs. Just back from the Gym, half hour on the weights and a 5K run again.

Agree about the scales Mr H, earlier in the week they said 13st 10

Good luck to everyone who is trying to lose weight and/or get more exercise!

I have been so busy with work over the last 3 months, sometimes working double time, I have had no chance for exercise, and also eating a little more. Looking forward to getting back on my bike (I have some lights so I can go out after work) and getting some walking done, with my camera of course!

You should all try and log some body fats maybe ?? :S

Give me a shout, if anyone needs help.

Im a nutritionist and i work with bodybuilders, so i have quite a range of clients.

I'd be happy to help/advise where i can.

Im in the process of moving my website, so all the content isnt on there at the moment.

But, here are some of my clients' progress pictures...

I remember I used Gareth some years back and had great progress but alas i fell by the way side :bonk:

Sorry to hear about your stroke and I hope you are coping with it. There is not much I can offer in the way of advice apart from the obvious like eating healthily and maybe reducing portions. You might want to also think about eating small amounts at more regular intervals throughout the day as apparently your metabolism can cope better with this.

Do you do any type of exercise? Why not try a brisk 30 minute walk every day, just fast enough to make you warm with a very light sheen of perspiration. This is a great way to burn fat.

I had my BMI done properly today with callipers and all that and it is now 21% - a little bit better than the 34% it was around a year ago.

Current weight: 84kg
Height: 5'10"
Gender: Male
Age: 50
Body Fat: 21%

I am about to start a fitness program when my gym opens later this month, I currently weigh around 19.5stone and would like to lose around 3 to 3.5 stone.

My problem is finding a good balanced diet and fitness routine which will help me lose weight and tone up my body, so any help and advice will be welcome.
Should also mention that I will be supplementing my diet with whey protein and fat metabolism tablets.

EDIT....Diet started Monday 07/03/11, weight 18st 9lb (231lbs), age 54,

my plan is to drink 2 protein shakes a day 2 fat metabolism tabs, and a protein based meal, also drinking about 4 pints of water per day.
I have joined a gym but it doesnt open til 18thMarch, but will be in there 4 days a week when it does

In short my aim is to get ripped for the summer. Need 2-3% of that BF and the abs are out hopfully :)

Couple of things that I've found that have helped me are Kettlebells and sleep. The former are awesome for both building muscle and getting your heart pumping plus you can buy a set and use them in your own home. The latter is hugely important too and don't think has been mentioned here. Don't neglect it!

If you can afford it get a PT or train with a pal - I've found that training with someone so much better as the encouragement to get that last rep out or swing a kettlebell for another 10 secs is where you realyl reap the benefits. I'll plug the guy that has been training me as I think he's done an amazing job, both in nutritional advice and in various forms of excercise! www.jaybenedetti.com.

My weight itself hasn't gone down that much, i've probably only lost 3/4'trs of a stone as I used to weigh about 15st 7. My target is just to shed fat and gain lean muscle.

Dietwise i've found eating every few hours works for me, and I eat tons better than I did previously. To ensure you get results it's 100% what you do outside the gym rather than in it. A useful additional thing that has come out of this is that i've learnt how to cook much more, which is good.

I also suplement with Protein (Sci MX) and Omega 3 Oils , either through Fish Oils or flak seed as I don't eat enough fish :( , plus Fenugreek.

Training regime is 5 week days and rest at weekends which I can breakdown further if anyone is interested, and dietwise i'll have a cheat day at the weekend, becuase otherwise you get bored slightly of the healthy stuff and lets be fair some of the food that's bad for you is damn tasty.

For those that do not want to go to the gym/ don't have the money etc buy some basic weights from Argos and then go to http://www.exrx.net/Lists/Directory.html for an excellent resource on how to perform excercises and which muscles these affect.

For those that do hit the gym and are scared to ask people questions, don't be. I thought this way initially but everyone I've asked at the gym, trainers or others people there just working out have always been helpful in advice and or helping spot you.

Sadly I don't have a before picture but here's one taken the other day on a crappy iphone camera.

Wow! Impressive, great delts and tone  I recently started again after almost a year (Since getting married last May :D ). Went straight in with heavy compound lifts and presses using the amount of weight I used to lift, didn't think about that lol. Almost killed myself, could hardly walk for 2 days! Not tried Sci-MX, are they a good brand? I normally get my stuff from www.myprotein.com found them to be good value for money :)

can you give us a break down of your food and exercise regime?:help:

Male
34 Years old
5ft 11in tall
Currently 15st 2lb
Body Fat 22%(ish)

Aim: 14st 7lb(ish) with body fat <20%

Last Feb I was slightly heavier than I am now but getting a little uncomfortable in 38in waist trousers :(

There's a gym at work and it's only £15pm month so after vowing I'd never set foot inside a Gym I joined up :bonk:

I was working out 4-5 time a week during my lunch break so only doing 30-40min workouts.

Started off on some moderate cardio then moved on to some moderate weights and cardio.

By August I was down to 14st 7lb and my 36in waist trousers fitted comfortably.

But....... A week in the South of France and a little loss of motivation due to hitting plateau meant that toward the end of the year my weight was creaping up again :shake: (although I know I probably gained some weight due to increasing my lean mass a little)

I now work out Mon-Thurs before work alternating between a cardio workout on a Mon/Wednesday and weights with a little cardio on Tue/Thursday.

Cardio usually consists of 10mins on a X-trainer, starting at level 10 and increasing 2 levels every 2 mins, 10 mins interval run on a treadmill, walking at 6.5kmh and running at 14kmh alternate minutes and 2000m on a rower in 8mins or better (although I do mix this up a little from time to time)

Weights wise I stick to a basic upper body workout doing 3x10 and using enough weight that I struggle to keep form for the last few reps of the last set and finish with a 10min interval run.

I know I could improve my diet a lot but I'm a really fussy eater and do tend to go a little crazy with junk on the weekend :bang:

Must admit I'm getting a little frustrated now as I'm really close to where I want to be but not getting closer to my goal :dummy:

I'm also losing the will to get up at 5:30am everyday for my pre-work workout

Well as some guy has just come up to me at work today and said "hello chuckles" and then asked me that when I went for a 4 mile run last night "did my falb wobble"... to which my mouth dropped open he then said to everyone not to worry as "he likes chubby girls"...

I weigh 9 stone (57kg)..

I think i'll slim down!! :( :baby:

your lucky in two days i have been told:

"My goodness!look at the size you have got!"

"When are you due?"

Congratulations, its amazing what a change simply changing your nutrition can make!

thanks!

my sisters came over for easter and none of them believed it was just a change of diet.

they're still insisting its something "else"

I've got complacent in the last week or so - but a lil self telling off should do well and get me back on track!

So I've been eating healthily for the past 2 weeks or so, moving into my third week I'm feeling SO tired :( I'm eating fresh fish, vegetables, poultry, occasional red meat, fruit, seeds etc. I've noticed a change in my clothing particularly my tops which is great, but I am SO tired :(

sarah it sounds like you are either starving yourself or not getting the right nutrion

i had the same thing a few weeks back long story but i stopped eating and was tired and lost 2 and a half pounds in 3 days (yes im big alread ylol )

my advice go to slimming world , i have been and my diet is the best it has ever been in less than 10 weeks i have dropped almost a stone and a half but i have had a few bad weeks ie not eating and also a week of eating junk

there is no measuring with slimming world , yes i am a male and in our session there is another 4 males 1 guy next to me has lost 2 stone in 8 weeks so it can be done and done correct with out killing yourself

i have always struggled with the correct foods and they have helped mroe than i could ever expect so drag a friend there

by the way i was 20 stone 2 and a half pound and now 2lb of 1 and a half stone

I plan on getting back into shape during summer after exams (and stay that way!). I'm not overweight or anything but when I was younger I was a LOT healthier/fitter and I've let myself go a bit for the past 3/4 years. I still do a bit of exercise but not as much as I'd like.

Gender: Male
Age: 19
Height: Haven't measured in a while but probably 5' 10"
Weight: 70KG

Since lent (gave up fizzy drinks, unhealthy snacks, takeaways, junk food), I've kind of been eating healthier since; don't eat half as much sweet snacks as I used to. And I'm looking into nutritional values more than I used to when buying foods. Have started eating nuts haha. I think the main culprit is alcohol though.. :( I'm not giving that up though! :p

My aim:
Lose the fat! (mainly torso area)! Build more muscle. Gain more flexibility.

My plan:
Drink 2L+ of water a day (sometimes I don't even drink any!)
Eat more veg/fruit.
Swimming at least 5 times a week for 30-60 minutes each time.
Basketball at least once a week.
Badminton at least 2/3 times a week.
Gym a few times a week.
Dancing a few times a week.

Hopefully I will do what I plan to do come summer!

Mrs A always had a problem with her weight after our Daughter was born 19 yrs ago! She went on diets, joined groups, got loads of info on weight loss, watched videos etc, but her weight varied quite a lot and she was never happy.
She joined Weightwatchers loads of times and it worked while she was going to the meetings, didnt work when she stopped going.
One of the reasons for not going was that the leaders didnt really inspire.
So, late last year she made another attempt to join and stay. She ended up becoming a leader, giving the inspiration to others that she found was lacking before.
Since Jan, she has dropped from a size 12/14 to size 8/10 ( as I am constantly told :naughty: )
I have lost a bit too because we all eat a healthy balanced diet.

I know this sounds like a plug for WW, but it really has worked for her and her meetings are always busy with lots of happy people losing weight and staying for the full meetings.

Of course the downside is that she has to have a new wardrobe of smaller size clothes (£££)

The system works. If someone keeps coming back and not losing weight, then she works with them to see why and they are always successful.

Anyway, thats our experience, worth a try?

Russ,
It's doo'able...

Your stat's were virtually identical to mine except I'm 40. At the back end of February me and my wife decided to start running on more or less a whim. I hadn't run in 20+ years and in the meantime I had contracted Type 1 Insulin dependant Diabetes at 23.

After a disastrous start of just trying to go out and run, a good friend who is a serious runner gave me a 5k in 6 weeks plan. Basically Fartlek training, split running and walking, with increasing emphasis on running up until you just run. Due to factors that were my own fault, it took me 8 weeks and not 6. Bad choice of shoes (go to a good running shop and get some good advice instead of buying online) slowed me down a bit and resulted in a minor injury.

Anyway 12 weeks on, I'm running two 5k's (sub 30 minutes) and a 10k (~1hr) a week. I've dropped to 14st 7lbs and 14.5% body fat.

The thing I personally like about the running is you can just open the door and go. No getting to/from a gym involved.

It's great now the weather is getting better too...

That's encouraging although I'm so not built for running (size 13 flat feet for starters  )

I also put on about 1/2 st while on holiday so that hasn't helped matters..... building back up to doing 4 lunchtimes a week in the gym and if this weather ever sorts itself out I may go out cycling/skating in the evening too.

Alternatively, my gf will be moving in with me soon and I think we're going to by an Xbox with Kinect and I reckon if I get on one of the dancing games (don't laugh but I used to do a bit of podium dancing "back in the day" at some raves  ) for 30+ mins that's help things too.

The 5K in 6 seems to have done the trick for you

Despite an active outdoor job my weight has been creeping up over the last two years. Now a combination of illness, injury, over-eating and sitting on my arris has seen my weight rocket. Throw in hypertension to the mix and it's time to do something about it. I've lost half a stone over the last two weeks by cutting out the sweet stuff and boy what a sugar come down that was, I've started being more active and have an assessment at the gymn tomorrow. I don't think I've ever felt more determined.

I too had a weight problem at Christmas i was 15 1/2 stone i lost 5lb through January just eating sensibly. My wife and daughter talked me into doing the Malverns Biggest Loser at the Malvern Splash gym this ran over a 6 week period. Mark who was running the course sorted out our dietary needs and varied our workouts over the 6 week period we were alsoexpected to burn an extra 2000 calories on top of the 2 workouts minium. We weighed in every week when i started i was 15 stone 2.8 lb when i finished 6 weeks later i weighed in 13stone 2.2lb. My BMI at the start was 28.4 and at the finish was 14.2. I have lost a further 9lb and now weigh in at 12 and a half stone. Keeping the weight off is now managed by weighing in twice a week and operating a 3.5 lb weight allowance if my weight raises by this amount i up my workrate at the gym and fall back onto the diet i was using for the workouts this seems to work for me. At fifty years of age i am now lighter than when i left school i know it is only the begining but i intend to stay at a sensible weight.
I should add that i to suffer from M.E. and Thyroid problems so this made losing weight difficult but not impossible I shall keep you all posted on how i go on
Regards
Richard

Well done Rich...and a nice bit of inspiration for me.

I have now lost 30kg from my heaviest (Xmas 2009) and am still going. Only 5kg more until my next target!

Everyone seems to be doing so well here!

I am a bit worried about Richard's (lost) BMI drop though!! ;)

Don't forget to embrace the summer months ahead, count yourselves lucky it isn't 50 degrees everyday like in some countries.

I personally have ditched the car for a more healthy commute into work (when possible) and it is amazing! Obviously not possible for everyone depending on where you work and what you do but definitely worth considering. I thought it is worth a mention even if it means only one person thinks about/does it!

Time wise I can get to and from work in the morning quicker using my bike compared to driving and feel like I have gained an extra hour a day because I don't have to dedicate any of my day to exercising and running round in circles. Plus you save all that money every week on petrol (which in my case I waste buying toys for my bike)

:D

Hi all,

Well time to weigh in on this thread.

I've always struggled with my weight, even though I'm a serving soldier.
About a month ago I saw a mate who I hasn't seen since Xmas, he had gone from 15 1/2 stone to 12 in 6m.
I asked how, he used slimming world. I decided to give it a go (felt weird, there's only 1 other bloke)

So 3 weeks ago I started.
Height: 5'7
Weight: 14st 9lbs
Target : 12st
Wed just gone was my3rd meeting, I got my 1/2 stone loss and 'slimmer of the week'

I'm eating more fruit & veg than ever in my life- still have te odd treat though, and for me the weekly paying and weighing motivates me to stick to the plan

I've never been one to post on the net about my weight etc (we have only just got the internet here in yorkshire :p). Have recently started to control my diet - and thought some people may find this useful as I have.

Online and Smartphone app great for keeping a food/excersize diary, a good reference for stats and advice. and completely free.

I'll probably regret posting this in the cold light of day. Oh dear.

My exercise/weight loss scheme has hit the buffers :(

I put on half a stone when I was on holiday, managed a week back in the gym and a drunken night out in some very bad shoes gave me blisters so bad I couldn't exercise for a week!!!

Managed another week or so in the gym, even managed to run 5K in under 30mins (just to see if I could) but the following week after 6 mins jogging at 10KMH on a treadmill my left calf muscle just "went", that was last Monday and I'm still really struggling now :(

I think I'm going to start the gym again tomorrow but just work on resistance stuff (something's got to be than nothing right??)

Can say that I'm seriously losing motivation now!!!
