I'm currently looking at buying a Laptop so that I can practice transferring images to a laptop, captioning and wiring 'Live' whilst shooting down at Farsley, I figured this would be the next thing I need to practice and get good at before I apply for an agency.

Anyway I've just been playing with LR3 and the tethered shooting feature and I love it.

I just attach my iD3 with the USB and click away and all images are straight into LR3 with back ups on my memory cards  BUT the best thing is I can apply develop presets on import, so for example I can set one up for basic sharpening, clarity, contrast, NR etc and all these are then applied as I take the shot, This I think is a great time saver.

Another great feature is the ability to add all the metadata and keywords on Import as well

Now I'm just wondering how many of you guys use Tethered shooting over swapping memory cards. Also is it viable to shoot tethered when its raining?

And finally if you are using two bodies is it possible to attach them both to a laptop and shoot tethered using both cams?

Any thoughts and tips on this would be greatly appreciated

Regards

Phil

Most of my stuff is done tethered.
Ill only not tether if Im going to be moving around a lot or kids/parents are gunna annoy me running into wires, finger printing the screen or wanting to look through pictures before were finished.

I use LR3 also but everyone elses computers at work have Capture, which is another good bit of tethering software.

I have never seen anyone use this method, cant see how it would be much advantage.
Get a card reader and get a few cards, cant imagine what could be easier.
If you get a goal/cele take the card out, download it and put the card back in or pop an empty one in. No use downloading loads of pics and wasting time finding the goals/cele you want. But whatever makes the process quicker and easier for you...

Hi Chris, I was just wondering if any of you pro's actually used this method. The fact that most of you guys use memory cards + reader tell me that maybe the tethered option is not the best.

Would'nt even consider the tethering option, i prefer to use a card reader and lock the images as i go along, cables strewn across your body with possibly another body around your neck means a messy environment, also your camera batteries may drain your laptop juice quicker than a card reader would , you could use it in a studio enviroment but not pitchside

I'm pretty sur Kipax uses it pitchside, drop him a PM

i shot tethered for a while but the novelty soon wore off to be honest:)

I now prefer cards but....i use photomechanic and have it set to only download locked files... so as I shoot i lock what i want.. takes seconds to download and does all the extras ready for caption and away..

Exactly the same here.

Try just getting the pictures on to your laptop and editing a few pics during half time.

I shoot tethered quite a lot pitchside. I do like it and find it saves vital seconds. You have to watch it when you need to leap out of the way of an errant player/ball and the cable gets in the way.

Hey And I was hoping you'd come and give your opinion as I read that you shoot tethered

Can I ask you how you do this with 2 camera bodies? Is it possible to have them both hooked up to a Laptop and shoot tethered into LR?

just a question on this which will probably sound really stupid - if most pros dont shoot tethered how would the bbc/sky sports get photos of the matches going on for the photostreams they have? would you edit a few over half time and upload them to wherever so they can get hold of them?

you missunderstand tethered :) all tethered is..its a way of getting the picture to the laptop.. not out to the internet.. Using other methods you still get the pics out to newspapers bbc or whoever just as quick.. even quicker maybe..

tethered... places every picture you take onto your laptop... lock and load only puts key moments on..

ah yeah i was just asking in here because its relatively on subject :P so would you just edit/upload at half time or is there another way of getting pictures to the press quicker?

i mean like on the bbc live football updates sorta thing they have a photo gallery with photos from the games going on - just wondering how youd get them to the press when youre busy shooting?

the same way as tethered... if after 5 mins a goal is scored i switch mem cards and within seconds (ultra fast reader and only locked files downloaded) i have the pics ready to edit/caption and send.. tethered users have to edit and caption just the same before sending.... the only diff between tethered and other mnethods is that they ahve every pic taken downloaded.. from one camera... most pro togs have two :)

ah so you just upload in the middle of the game but only when there's a key moment (such as a goal)? that makes sense i guess!

yup... watch a game or watch telly... most photogrpahers have there nose in the laptop not shooting... as soon as somehting interesting happens they download (or already downloaded if tethered) to the laptop they have to then edit (only slight.. horizon etc) then they must caption it then they have to either uplaod or email it... tethered or not you still have to stop shooting and do all that while the game is on..

I really think you might have confused tethered wiht going straight out to the customer from camera?

main reason for tethered is at big games to save valuable seconds on your competitor... 20 togs in same place taking same pic it can be a case of first one to the picture desk gets published....but its not always that tight :)

sorry i think i just wasnt clear enough with what i was asking - i was just generally asking about how you got the photos to the press mid-game and whether you stopped shooting or just did it at half time! - i thought id ask it in here to save a new thread on such a simple question :)

cheers though, that clears things up for me

i do try and see what theyre doing at matches as ive been going to a few matches recently watching huddersfield town but i keep my eye on so many things i miss a lot! (i play football so i watch player positioning/technique etc, i ref so i watch what the ref is doing, i was the togs, and on top of that i watch the actual game!)

But you did ask how it was done if not tethered?

if most pros dont shoot tethered how would the bbc/sky sports get photos of the matches going on for the photostreams they have?

thus suggesting tethered was somehow different when it really isnt..its just a different way to get the pic from camera to laptop thats all.. that was the point i was making :)

Hope its cleared it up a bit anyways :)

yeah i can see what you mean now rereading my question, just me being stupid :P

cheers :)

I made a post asking the question a while back. working with the premier league togs that I have over the past few months they use exactly the same method as Kipax and Aperture87

No - one body at a time only. Unless you invest in some VERY expensive software that will tether numerous bodies at once (as per that bullet-time technique).

I use my short lensed body tethered as that's the one that is most likely to capture goals and celebrations that need to get out most quickly. Usually the first shot is on the laptop before I've finished shooting the sequence.
