Hi Everyone.

Okay I bought a tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 xr just before Christmas. Its a great lens. Then tonight I noticed that there is a chip (1.5mm x .5mm) in the glass and a smaller one symmetrical positioned on ther other side, and the center part of the lens is full of tiny scratches. I only noticed it today after taking off the polarizer at Christmas. (before that the lens was perfect.)

The two chips are exactly 25mm apart and seem to correspond to the moving parts of the lens cap. I think the lens cap rubs against the lens. Could this be possible ?? Ive measured it and it comes within a fraction of a millimeter of the glass if not touching it constantly.

My two other lenses are 4 years old and are perfect. I'm so careful and this lens is only a couple of weeks old, and is pretty much ruined.

I'm so upset !! I'm going to take it back to the shop tomorrow and see what they say.

Has anyone had experience like this

thanks

chris

Thats a bummer Chris, regardless of the outcome i wouldnt worry about a few small scratches. Scratches have to be pretty damned big and bordering on a crack to even show in an image. Sounds as if the cap may have damaged the lens but its quite an unusual thing to happen.

you could try this

Proving goods were faulty when you bought them.

Where the goods are faulty, take them back within 6 months and the shop has to prove they WERE NOT faulty when you bought them. After 6 months you must prove they WERE faulty when you bought them.

By law you have up to six years to make a complaint, but this doesn't mean goods must last six years, they must last what most people would consider to be a ‘reasonable' length of time. So if there is wear and tear that breaks the product then the likelihood is you have no claim. Yet if it was an unreasonable fault, you do.

If there is an argument over whether the goods are faulty or not – the burden of proof is on the consumer.

If it is the correct cap for the lens the moving parts should not be able to touch the front element.
Caps can pose a danger when puting them on should there be a slip and the edge of the cap strikes the lens.

Look at the lens cap and be sure it states 72mm filter size.

Thanks for your replies

I just went to the shop. Nothing they can do. It definitely wasn't chipped when I bought it as we looked at it in the shop.

I might see how much a repair is, but as it doesnt effect image quality it might not be worth it.

I just cant think how it got chipped. :(
