I am planning to go to New York City soon for holiday and am looking to get a sturdy table top tripod to take on my travels just to steady the camera (Olympus Pen E-PL7) for night time shots around the city and up the Empire State Building and Top of the Rock. I am not looking to take a full sized tripod with me as I'm going to be travelling light. I have narrowed down my selection to a Manfrotto Pixi and the Pedco Ultrapod II.

Any opinions on either? I do like the idea of the Ultrapod as you can strap it to railings and could come in handy where you wouldn't normally be allowed to use a full sized tripod.

Also, my wife will be using it so the simpler it is, the better so that she can have fun taking photos than trying to work out how the tripod works.

Many thanks!

Why not take a GorillaPod, then if you can't find a table you could attach it to a lamppost? They are so easy to use you wouldn't believe, and take up next to no room.

I bought the Manfrotto PIXI Mini for my trip to Budapest, was absolutely rock solid with my 600d plus 24-105 lens attached. Really couldn't fault it in any way.

I have a manfrotto pixi, great little mini tripod, the only downside I find is that you cannot shoot vertical shots with it, I'm considering buying the manfrotto 709b or cullmann magnecit copter.

Many thanks for your replies. I managed to have a look around and the GorillaPod seems a bit bulky to carry around in a small bag. The Manfrotto PIXI is better as it is fairly sturdy but as mentioned, cannot get vertical with it unless you add on an extra ball head which makes the cost of the tripod double that of the UltraPod.

I haven't actually seen the Ultrapod in real life but the reviews of it look really good and might just end up getting it from BH in NYC as it is under $16 rather than the £20 over here
