I've currently got a basic tripod that has a single, central column that slides up and down vertically and there is no way of tilting it or inclining it like you can on some other tripod brands e.g. the Manfrotto 055 range, in order to clear the central part of the tripod?

Can anyone recommend a decent T-Bar or cross arm that I could attach to the top of my current tripod that would allow me to position a camera over a table for macro shots or angle the camera away from the central comlumn? It would only be for indoor use and doesn't need to be light...

The ones I have found so far are either really expensive (see below), and not very flexible in terms of positioning, or really cheap and nasty. The one below is ~£130, for a little bit extra I could buy an 055! Something around the £50-£60 would be good.

Manfrotto do a range of 131 arm i.e 131DB etc. The unit in your photo looks to be havily inspired by the 131. It would be less expensive without the double mounting brackets, you can get just the arm and put the tripod head on the end of it. Sadly in this day and age £50-60 does not get you very far I fear.

A quick look on Ebay suggests that you could get a Manfrotto 190 for £50 ish and that has the moveable centre column that goes out sideways.

Thanks guys, some useful options there.

The tripod I have is basic in a sense that it is just a tripod, it was far from inexpensive (carbon fibre) hence the need to adapt rather than replace.

The Benbo looks good though and ideal for macro and non-travel use, assuming I can pick one up at a decent price.

Edit: A 190 would also be good at that price.
