Yet another request for opinions!

I currently have a Canon 40D with EF-S 10-22, EF-S 17-85 and an EF 100 2.8 Macro (non IS but the later USM). Also have a Sigma 17-500 but don't need the length this gives anymore.

Have decided to go full frame with the 5D mkII so will need to change the lenses as well. Thought it would be worth (as I currently can and probably won't ever be able to again) go for L lenses. The ones I am looking at are:

EF 17-40 f4.0 L - figured this would be more or less a direct replacement for the 10-22.

EF 70-200 f4.0 L (non IS) - would like the IS but that is a lot extra, as is the f2.8

Sigma 50 1.4 - to fill the gap between the two above.

EF 100 f2.8 L IS macro - I know the one I already have is going to fit, but have read that this one is better, and the added weather proofing (and the L) would be worth having.

Are there any others I should consider or do you think that will cover what I need. My photography is mainly landscapes, macro and still life (never take pictures of people!)

Thanks for any help,

Brian

I know - I have finally decided to give up playing bass (hand problem) so decided to sell the instruments and put the funds towards this!

Oh no! I'd hate having to give up bass. I feel for you :'(

My honest advice would be to get the camera and 24-105L* and leave it at that for now. See how you get on.

It's a fabulous lens, I use it for about three quarters of everything I do. Equivalent field of view to a 15-66mm on your current camera.

Then I think the lenses to add are the 17-40L and 70-200L 4 IS, perhaps a macro (though I use tubes on the 70-200) and maybe a fast prime (nifty-50 might be okay for occasional use). Saving some money on tubes and the nifty would give you some more to spend where you need it, ie on the IS version of the 70-200L 4 for example, or a decent flash gun etc.

Unless the stuff you shoot is very unusual, having just the Sigma 50 (nice lens BTW :) ) in that general purpose slot sounds like a recipe for frustration. My experience is that building an outfit on paper is not the same as doing it for real. Decide on your priorities, invest well there, build the system around it one item at a time.

*Edit: or 24-70L 2.8. Lovely thing, but it's heavy and expensive to gain just one stop. And no IS.

Cheers Adam - been playing for around 40 years now (I started early lol) but haven't played in a band for around ten years because of arthritis in my left hand which has slowly got worse. reached the point now where it is painful to play for more than 15 minutes so figured it would be time to give up. Am keeping an acoustic guitar though, couldn't give up completely :)

Thanks Richard - know what you mean but if I leave that money in the bank someone might think of other ways to spend it ;) Will definitely consider what you suggest though. Might also hang on to the macro I've got and see what the results are like before I upgrade it to the L version. I did look at that 24-70, does look a nice lens.

ive got the 100mm macro on the 5DII and i find it great, never had a problem with sharpness with it. TBH when it comes to macro shooting at small apertures you will probably not see the difference .

That said the IS is a definate plus, do you use additional lighting for your macro work? if so it might not be that important and 100mm is not a huge focal length to hand hold for portraits etc...

Just ordered the siggy 50mm 1.4 very good price, but not singing till i,am winning, the 50mm will be on my 5D i used one as well as the 30mm, and 85mm 1.4;s, at a trade show, just sharp sharp sharp,

Merc

Haven't used lighting for the macro so far Lee, but planning on setting up a small still life studio setup in the loft (once all the other decorating is done :) ).

And that Sigma 50 does look good - have to let me know how you find it Mark, I will be waiting till I have sold a bit of the current gear before that one is bought.
