Swearing in Threads

This is just an observation really as I have done it before myself in threads but... Why is it ok to fill a 'swear' word with asterisks but leave enough letters so everyone knows what word you are using but it isn't ok to use the actual letters?

Do we delude ourselves that we aren't actually really swearing or is it purely the 'rules' of the forum not allowing us to swear so therefore we get around it with asterisks?

I'm not really sure who it protects. If there is a no swearing rule, why do a few asterisks make it ok? Who decides how many asterisks are necessary to make it ok? Why can't we just use the swear words if we want to?

Its a slow day today, just saw the Cecil the Lion thread and it got me thinking about swearing.....

there's a forum filter than prevents certain words for appearing in the thread as the words that were typed ....... simple as that

Who needs asterisks ffs!

:)

Most if not all, bulletin boards have swear filters by default, ( hence the **** ) the admin have control to add or take away words, from the filter.
And the state of play on TP is how the admin degreed it will be.

if there was a blank, it would make no sense at all,
If I used the word in a sentence, the admin would have to decide what word was used and if an insult was intended.

This way there is no mistake

Ahhhh I get it now. Filters. Can I try it? Does the filter just replace letters with asterisks? s*** thats good

Haha - cool! It worked....I can see hours of endless fun coming when I'm bored! This answers the how but It still begs the question tho as to the why?

It's always worth reading through a fresh post just to check that the filter's caught a word. A fast enough edit should be enough to keep the mod team (who will always be able to see [possibly as the default!] the unasterisked norty wurd) happy. It's generally pretty good but I'm not sure it would catch many foreign curses! It's possible (but not easy or generally advisable) to cheat but not really worth it, besides, such (ab)use is generally aimed at someone here rather than the subject of a post and that's a bigger no-no than swearing! (Some alternative spellings might be obscure enough to confuzzle everything [and everyone!])

xxx xxxxx xxxx!

So, if I were to say "the toilet is full of sh*t", that'd be OK
But if I were to say "Cobra is full of sh*t" I'd quickly get a suspe[account suspended]

The obvious example of cheating the system is calling Dick a dick. In that case, Dick is acceptable but calling him a dick isn't.

I'm sure dick used to be changed!

I moved from there, it's now more properly known as Shorpe...

billiards

(sometimes you may get banned, for a day or two)

If England b****r it up to day there will be loads of ******&@! about

I thought I pretty much covered that ;)
Not really - you covered it as an insult, which I understand. I guess the filter can't tell of the context so they're all filtered regardless. Its all geared around being nice to each other, however, there's loads of ways to insult without swearing...

Some of these posts have made me chuckle...glad I asked the question!

its all rather illogical ,but who really gives a toss ,the thing that really p***es me off is spellcheckers altering words without you realising

I hate that the spellchecker is convinced I want to use Americanised spelling.

It just tried to make me post "Americanized". No dice, spell checker, no dice.

Scunthorpe:D
That used to be caught too, till Marcel overrode it :D

True enough and if caught or reported, the person may get a kick in the b*****ks or a slapped wrist. ;)

It did

A lot depends what kind of mood I'm in and the context :p
But yes generally if used in an argument, you'd get some kind of sanction,

the thing that really p***es me off is spellcheckers altering words without you realising
The swear filter used to do that too, it was actually quite amusing ;)

If it p1sses it down it will serve the w4nkers right
That is purposely circumventing the profanity filter, should be met with a warning and ban :P

That is a local PC/Mac setting surely? Well it is for me :)

I quite like the profanity filter and just trust it to do its job, when things get hard for me is when people try and implement their own and get the number of characters wrong. f*****g w******s :P

Oops it appears that a w****r is no longer a profanity. Oh cock.

Hmm interesting, one w****r is a profanity, yet a group of w******s appears to be a

See ya in a week! ;)

I've heard the three lions are doing well, so the Aussies are looking for a dentist...
I shouldn't laugh, it is bad, but actually that one is very very good. Even me who doesn't understand the game where people pause for a cup of tea gets that one....Like it

Once 'TU5' has gone, frankly there'll be a lot less need to swear anyway.

Curious as it always was before

Just 24 hours for that :D
And what are the credits for finding a word that wasn't in the profanity filter? Surely testing must be worth something :)

A pubic I mean public flogging

Oh f*****g hell, does he have to referenced in every thread. Besides it looks like there is a successor already to fill the voice seeing how the Cecil thread is being derailed by that individual...

I don't see how a member can be held responsible for other people swearing, it seems to me, to be a lack of ability to articulate ;)

Indeed. as I have said before the more you mention him the more the myth perpetuates.
Hero or anti hero?
Have none of you ever seen Beetle Juice, Beetle Juice, Beetle Ju... ?

I'm sorry boss ;)
No you're not :p
