Swearing in Threads

This has always been a thing which has boggled my mind too.

Example today, I think on the front of the 'i' newspaper was a picture of a guy carrying a placard which said "frack off". Everyone knows the word alluded to, but the word 'frack' is fine to write. If on the other hand he had used the four letter variant, it would have been f*** with asterisks. Again, we all KNOW what the word is - the only difference is the asterisks rather than the u,c,k letters. So it can only be the shape of the letters which offends us (since we all know what the word itself is)?

I don't have an issue with any collection of letters (since that's all they are), but I remain baffled by why there's a swoon-fest when four letters are shown in a certain order, yet when they are masked it's fine, despite everyone knowing what is meant.

We're a strange lot.
This was the point of my thread really. It's just plain silly. A couple stars don't change the word, we all know what it is so print it or delete it altogether if you find it objectionable. It is no less offensive as 'f***' than it is fully lettered.

Word replacement would be cool I agree, and so much funnier.

I never ceased to amaze me how foul mouthed some parents are on the playground whilst waiting for their children...
My kids (older now) swear as much as I do. My only stipulation was/is that they understand what circumstances it's ok to do it and when it isn't. Seems to have worked on the whole...they're gonna do it however hard you try for them not to so much less hassle to work with them on it!

Never understood this logic. Extra words can't possibly demonstrate a lack of vocabulary!

Sometimes f*****g k******d is exactly the right phrase, other times it's truculent xenophobic inbred buffoon. They both work, there's a time and a place :)

Ahhhh I get it now. Filters. Can I try it? Does the filter just replace letters with asterisks? s*** thats good

You mean surely meant shit?

Well over 20 yrs online first using BBS message systems.. then IRC and other forms of chat... email, newsgroups. messageboards and social media.. very active online for over 20 yrs and never once felt the need to type a swear word.... well certainly nothing strong.. def not f word or anything...

I swear in real life.. but usually off the cuff..just comes out.. when typing you ahve to think about it.. your doing it for effect which is all rather childish if you havent got enough brains to get a point across without swearing..... just IMHO :)

Ironically I seem to make a lot of other people swear :)

Nope I read it today (y) Bye Nod

Deliberately beating the swear filter used to be 24 hours off / goes off to check the rules :p

24hrs? That`s a normal break for me nowadays in the bird forum :p
