weekly Susiejb 52 in 2016 Celebrate

Very nice Susie, the red and the green go well together, with no other "colour distractions" it works well :)

Lovely poppy photos and I really, really like the presentation, very good. For smooth water I find I need at least several seconds and up to 30 seconds exposure so you really need a tripos and an ND filter, most people seem to use a 10 stop and the SRB Photographic filters are really good value. I guess you could get away with going at dawn or dusk as an alternative.

How strange...I seem to have commented on your thread recently in my head and not in reality..a bit worrying!
I love. love, love your composite - it works so well, flowing beautifully and with such a great backstory as well. I'm in awe of your skills putting it all together!
Pair is a very classy shot - I like the low key lighting on this.
Your reshoot is vibrant and lovely - I seem to remember another lovely poppy shot from you earlier in the 52. I especially like the shot bottom right for the lovely detail on the underside of the flower.

Beautiful Susie - love the vibrant splash of colour.

The colours are beautiful, lovely flowers.

Agree with all the above comments, the colours are fantastic.

Stunning colours - beautiful:clap:

Thank you all for the lovely comments, you really can't go wrong with poppies can you they're so beautiful.

Thank you Chris @sirch the light is definitely the main thing I struggle with on the smooth water, I must try and get down to the beach when it's not brilliant sunshine. I've done a bit of practicing on the small waterfall in our garden pond o_O and it definitely works better in the shade. I 'm pretty persistent, and hopefully I will get something half decent eventually.

Thank you for those lovely comments Emma, very much appreciated :)

That is absolutely lovely Susie - marvellous markings on the spider but also sharp focus on the web and positioning against that coloured bg makes it a super shot.

The light is very well handled with great details on the spider and web against the bright background. It looks big enough to me.

Great focus on spider and web and a lovely soft background. I'd have been tempted to use some sort of reflector (even a white piece of paper) to throw a tiny bit more light on the spider's body. though that may have had a negative impact on the translucence of the legs? Definitely a biggie anyway!

Great photo of the huge spider slightly off centre in its web. Very sharp and well exposed.

Thanks Carl ...he is beautiful isn't he ( I assume it's a 'he' o_O)

Thanks Chris.

Great markings on the spider itself...

Thank you Mark.

Nice spider and a good BG, where you scared ?

lol well, he does make me jump ...he moves so quickly, only got this one shot, every time he saw the lens coming near he ran away !

What a fab shot Susie. You've captured it perfectly.:clap::clap:

Thanks Jill :)

Thanks Emma ...must admit I've never used a refelector, I don't think it would work with him anyway, I only got this one shot, as every time he saw me coming he ran away and hid !

Ooo that's very nice Susie !!! - love the background and the composition is spot on too :)

Thank you DK.

Great photo of the huge spider slightly off centre in its web. Very sharp and well exposed.

Thanks Bernd.

Nice job, well captured.
It looked big because i reckon you were standing on the seat...lol

As if ....thank you Walter.

Difficult to deal with the BG, I appreciate and it does look slightly under exposed.

Lovely spider (I do like spiders :)).

Nice detail and well spotted.

Cheers.

Thanks Andy I don't think I could alter the exposure without compromising the definition in the spider, must admit I was pleased with capturing the pattern on him.

We visited St Michael's Mount in Marazion on Thursday, so I decided to try a couple from there for this weeks theme, couldn't decide which one I liked the best so put them both on.

They had just finished a harvest thanksgiving service when we arrived, these baskets were on the windowsills of the chapel. There was a lot of light through the window which I couldn't do much about, so I decided to run with it, and added a sunburst to emphasize it instead.

The causeway was totally underwater so we took the boat back, I liked the silhouette of the boatman against the castle.

Both photos are very atmospheric, I really like the colours and lighting in the harvest one, the sunburst works for me.
After the boat ride is so well framed and i think the sepia adds a whole new feel. Lovely.

Two good takes but the light in after the harvest is IMHO very good indeed, a lovely photo which really captures the mood, very good. I think with it being a silhouette I prefer St Michael's Mount to be sharper but the man with the boat against the sparkly water is very nicely done

I love the Harvest flowers and basket, the light from the Church window just flickering through, really like it.:)

Yes, the harvest flowers for me too Susie. Like the fact that you made a feature of the glaring light - it was a feature at the time and recorded as such in the image. Lovely colours.

Hi, I like the compression in #2 and the composition, not too keen on the tone and feel B&W would work better.

#1, a little fill light on the front would really make this special, but I appreciate you would not have a reflector with you :)

Cheers.

Hi Susie

Ancient - Great images lovely details and colours
Urban - Wow you must of spent ages processing that very well done
Pair - Great image love the reflections
Reshoot - Lovely colours and lighting great details
Big - Great Macro image lovely lighting and detail
After - 2 Lovely images I think i prefer No 2 but don't know why!

I prefer #2 for after, great composition. #1 is a bit dark on the LHS in my opinion.

Hi Susie , Iike the flowers a nicely composed and lit image the second one also works well but his head is right on the horizon so dissapears if you see what I mean

Hi Susie,
Big - Needs a NSFW spoiler ;) The markings on it's back are really clear. How big is it really? Taken with a macro lens?
After - The harvest shot for me. So much more detail, yet it has the feel of an old photo to me. The boat is cool, but too much shadow for me.

Thanks Chris ...I did try to darken it slightly but if I went too dark it lost too much definition.

Thanks Shirley :)

Thanks Andy, it was originally in black and white, I felt this effect gave it a more intense feel !!

Thanks Bernd, #1 I was going for an 'Old Masters' look ....that's my excuse anyway :)

Yes I do know Alan, it's annoying, I hesitated to list it but it didn't look too bad on my iPad, and I did like that one.

Lol @LC2 , my son hates spiders Tim, so I put it on Facebook for him :D it's about a centimetre, one of the larger ones hanging around in the garden lately, yes, I used a Raynox macro. They spin glorious webs I must get out when it's been raining and take some.

First rate stuff here susie. (y)

Top job with the scissors ... I don't think I've ever tried black BG with reflection in glass like that. We used to see more of it in the 52s a year or two back.

BIG spider, great detail.

After the Harvest is beautiful. Great colour, textures and use of natural light. (y)

:) thanks d00d ...good to see you liked them.

Alien o_O I struggled with this one, and ended up Googling 'Alien plant species', apparently lots of fungi in this country are Alien, also they are invasive to trees and logs, and they look like flying saucers. So I decided they were three good enough reasons to go off on a fungi hunt today :)
