It's simple things that have been bugging me ever since I started driving couple of years ago.

Why, why, why, why, why do people drive with fog lights on ALL the time??

really bugs me when I'm blinded by some goon trying to look 'cool'

grrrrrrrr :bang:

...also, why fit headlights that are 50 times brighter than the sun???

Is this just more or does is bug other folk as much as me?

because they are one of 2 people, they are either-

1)the moronic sort that are so unobservant they cant see the foglight warning light on the dashboard, so they dont realise they have got them on, the same sort of driver that drives around in the middle lane of the motorway...

2) the moronic sort that realise they have there foglights on, realise they are blinding every person that comes towards them but dont care either, the same sort of driver that drives around in the middle lane of the motorway.....

ive tried and you can see no better in normal conditions with foglights on or off, as the light is very low and concentrated on the area right infront of the car, an area that you dont generally need to look at (as when your driving at even 30mph your looking along way infront of the car)

so these people are just complete ****s, i just now stedfastly refuse to turn my main beam off if someone has foglights on (unless there are cars behind them), they;re blinding me so its tit for tat as far as im concerned, i used to drive a mini and as you sit so low if someone has mainbeam or badly adjusted lights you get completely blinded, with foglights on as well its just dangerous.

for some reason though car manufacturers insist on putting the rear foglights on car on a switch that requires the fronts to be on as well, often when its quite foggy id like to put my rear fog on (as im worried about somoene coming from behind and not seeing me) but i dont want to blind oncoming traffic by having the front fogs on (i end up driving with both and as soon as someone comes towards me i turn both off, so as not to blind others. having rear foglight first would mean you could ensure no one hits from the rear as your rear lights are much less visible in foggy conditions than your fronts, yet still be courtious to the cars coming towards you (maybe i could swao the pins on the switch over...)

bright headlights are useful though, especially on narrow roads in the dark (rallycars often have 6 lights on the front so they can see further) however i sort of agree that there should be a max light output when the lights are dipped, the gas discharge headlights fitted to many prestige cars like range rovers and bimmers are horendously bright even when dipped the light is also very 'white' which is much harsher on the eyes (which is probably what jerks your eyes more) that conventional filament bulbs

I think i've used my fogs twice, and that was prob for a total of 30 seconds!

As you say, harder to see with them on in the fog. I drive down country lanes all the time.

I've even seen folk driving with side lights and fogs on... not even the normal headlights on! and of course I've seen many police cars driving past paying no notice... sods law would be if i had a problem with my lights i'd get pulled over!

Having the worst Jan ever so need to vent my fustration at somthing... and this is it at the moment!

and what is the point of the height adjustable lights now, everyone just sets them on the highest and drives round blinding each other!

Damn right!

Shame they can't be caught by a speed camera, plenty of those about.

Even seen folk with them on during the day :cuckoo:

Interesting thread.

I am of the opinion as others that Fogs are used only in Foggy conditions where they would be necessary to switch on.

However, I own a Ford Galaxy and it looks like the Fogs are on. In fact they also act as Side Lights so I have had many people comment on them. I then prove to them that they are indeed just sides by showing them on the dashboard that they are off and also showing what gets lit up when the Fogs are switched on.

Other manufacturers are doing the same so its no longer as easy to tell whether it is someones Fog lights that are on or they are part of the dipped beam cluster.

the light is alot less bright on the low level sidelights of cars, its usually easy to tell the difference in the dark, however to me it does seem to set a precedent that its ok to drive around with your foglights on (obviously you dont have them on) and every moronic boyracer in a corsa or saxo mimics it to look cool

Don't even get me started on stupid drivers. I'm sick to death of being blinded by super-bright headlights. Headlights that are so bright, they look like full beam.

And then there are drivers who have absolutely no idea how to use indicators properly (if at all). This week (several times), I have been behind drivers who either:
Indicate too early and don't turn where you expect them to
Indicate just as they are turning the corner
Don't indicate at all - this really p*sses me off, especially on roundabouts when I am waiting to move onto the roundabout and morons don't indicate to say they are exiting. That just sooo winds me up :annoyed:

i was nearly killed over the christmas period by a foreign lorry driver who didnt indicate and went all the way round a roundabout in the outside lane, nearly killing me as i exitted (his road position was for leaving the roundabout but he clearly didnt!) ive seen it quite alot recently that drivers just dont seem to know anything about indicating or roadposition or which lane to use.

saying about lanes though it infuriates me when the lane markings are only marked on the road under the cars infront so you can easily find yourself in the wrong lane, would it be hard to put the markings further from the junction so we can "get in lane"

Totally agree. Also, at night and the road is wet, I cannot see road markings at all clearly, as the reflection from the grey road and white markings are just the same. Surely it would be possible to address this problem by using materials having different reflective properties?

Anthony.

or just put signs up? that you can see regardless of road conditions or amount of traffic

try riding a motorbike and see how incosiderate/stupid drivers become. moving to the right on 15 feet wide lanes to try and stop you passing them.or pulling out from side roads infront of you.
even passing parked cars when you have right of way and almost forcing you off the road. and it aint a little bike either. they even pull out infront of you when your driving the "company car". 8 feet wide, 14 feet tall and yellow.
sadly the roads are full of halfwits and arrogant cretins who wouldnt recognise the highway code if it was inserted up their rectum.

I've been doing alot of motorway driving recently..there's more people driving with main beams on too...WTF??!!!! Should get that rear LCD display unit so I can tell the stupid people to turn their sodding lights down/on/foglights off..with a sprinkling of swear words in there for good measure ^_^
And being pillion on a bike I know what you mean about crazy car drivers not looking out for them. Think they should make everyone who aims to drive a car,to do a CBT or something similar. I'm always vigilant and keep a look out for bikers now.

You would have thought pulling these sort of people would be easy money for the police.

I drive up a road called New Hall lane a lot in Preston, loads of it going on as well as folk parking on double yellow lines infront of traffic lights etc... police just drive by though :cuckoo:

new hall lane is the worst part of preston, its a ****tip and crap to drive along because of all the traffic and parked cars parked on traffic lights etc!

:woot:Hey, 122 people have read this! if everybody put a omment down we could use it as some sort of strange abstract petition! :woot:

People who sit behind you on a motorway while you're in the outside lane doing 80mph and flash their lights because you're 'crawling', then see your left signal to pull in and blindly hit the gas. Nearly been scraped by an impatient overtaker several times - do they expect me to step aside gently to let them pass, or just veer wildly across to the left to get out of their way?

People who leave the WIDEST berth when driving around parked cars!!!! God forbid you should damage that skip you're driving! I am talking about pulling over into the opposite lane just to get past! And as such, you have to wait behind them while they wait for traffic coming from the other direction to stop first, when there is PLENTY OF ROOM FOR TWO CARS!!!!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

/breathes

People who INSIST on sitting in lane 3 on the motorway simply because there's a car to over take in lane 2 about a mile ahead!

It's now a case of counting those people that DO have good lane appreciation as opposed to those that don't! And people wonder why the motorways are jammed up? THAT'S BECAUSE YOU'RE ALL IN 1 ****ING LANE!!!

Sorry, my commute to Heathrow <> Derby is not fun these days!

Motorway lane hogging is my worst bug in driving!! im tempted to g round them and pull sharply over just infront of them!! just to make a point.. Iv been lucky enough to do Offensive AND defensive driving courses in the past and although i dont consider myself be be the best driver in the world i do like to think im considerate and safe.. i wish everyone else could at least TRY to be the same..

Front foggies dont really bother me too much.. they light just infront of the car and imo dont warent being demonised as a dazzler.. its he REAR foggies that get me!! you know if someone is driving around with THEM on they are gonna be blissfully unaware of it.. and as such a nupmty of the highest order and shouldnt be allowed to drive as tey are not in FULL control of their vehicle.. if they cant control the lighting how am i to have faith in them on the road??

Lack of motorway lane discipline drives me crazy, that and people who do not indicate. The amount of times I have nearly been wiped out by some old goat who just pulls out in front of you and then looks at you in amazement as you express your thoughts with a few well chosen hand gestures :bang::bang:
Gotta agree with NathanJT, amazing how many people stay in lane 2 and 3 regardless of whether they need to be there.

Firkwits say's I:shrug:

I'm with fraggle101 on the issue of front fogs to be honest. The whole point of them (as most people have mentioned) is that they produce diffused light low around the front of the vehicle. If they're dazzling then there's something else wrong. It's the rears that are bloody dangerous!

Also, as someone who drives a car with bi-xenon headlights I find it just as annoying when people flash you because they think bright blue = main beam. They soon realise their mistake when they GET main beam back at them LOL!

I lived in south east london for a while and i did have to chuckel when i saw all the small cars slowing down for the width restrictions - Ambulances fit through them you would think a mini would have no trouble.

I absolutely hate HID headlamps where they come up behind you on a motorway, blue and flickering - I look up expecting to see an emergency vehicle, and then, if they've been adjusted badly, they melt my retinas.

Do all HIDs flicker like that, or just some? I don't think it's safe!

PS. I use 'Blue Vision' xenon bulbs (not really blue, just a much cooler colour temp) and have a problem neither with blue lights nor projectors per se - just flickering HIDs...

The problem is caused because by law Xenon headlights have to be automatically self levelling and the state of our roads (when I start my car they point to the floor and back up to level again to calibrate themselves).

The headlights are constantly levelling themselves but can obviously only do this at a certain speed. As such they can get caught out by undulations (even slight ones) and end up pointing up when they're trying to point down, if that makes sense?

They can also get caught out by hard breaking/acceleration as the nose of the car invariably dives/raises.
