This was a lighting workshop, as described
here on the Lencarta website.
My idea of a lighting workshop is a session where people can learn how to understand light and use use it well; something that is very difficult to do by reading books, reading forum posts or trial and error.
After making arrangements for the first one (held today) I thought it might be a good idea to hire a second model, so that people would have more shooting time, and Lencarta agreed to pay for it - but the second model, who was due to arrive at 11 a.m., failed to turn up so I was only able to provide what I had promised to provide in the first place.
We covered the principles of lighting, using hard light, soft light, lighting (and not lighting) the background, creating a sense of depth by selective lighting of the background (as opposed to either black or white backgrounds, which tend to be very 2-dimensional), short lighting, broad lighting, the use of lighting gels, rim lighting, fill light, reflectors, and specialised lighting tools such as spotlights, which are not readily available to most people.
If we had covered fewer techniques we would have had more shooting time, but I didn't (and don't) feel that providing a lot of shooting time should be the priority - there are plenty of 'glamour days' and similar, where people can shoot to their hearts content but where they learn little or nothing. Lencarta is committed to helping people to get the best from their lighting, and I hope that these workshops fill that need.
The model was excellent, and exactly right for this type of training session. What I will do in the future if possible (and it shouldn't be a problem) is to arrange for the model to arrive an hour earlier.
