Studio lighting day sponsored by Lencarta

Booked two places for April 3rd. Looking forward to it.

I'm thinking about booking the 1st May session. I know it says all levels of photographers but will my kit be ok for the day?

Yes, any camera with a standard hotshoe and that can be used on manual will be fine.

Ive just booked on the 5th June course. Really looking forward to it and I too am a studio virgin

What is the start and end time?

I've just ordered a set from Lencarta, it's a shame that this isn't further south so I can play too!

I don't really know all that much Latin either but here's another famous Latin quote:
Iustus invado vestri car quod loco vestri pes down:lol:

Im paying £95 for one in manchester next week, £30 is a steal

Well, I don't think that £95 is a lot to pay, but charging less than the going rate could possibly cause problems for other people and we don't want to do that.

Lencarta wants to encourage people to improve their studio photography and of course by subsidising it so heavily is making it accessible to everyone, but at the same time I'm a bit concerned that by charging so little we may be making life difficult for other people who run courses.

One possibility is to charge more and offer more on future lighting workshops, this is something that's being looked at - I can't go into detail as nothing has been decided yet.

I had a very interesting conversation with a guy at Focus who told me that he had been on a lighting course in my area, he had a good time with the very nice lads who ran the course, but it was obvious to him that they didn't know much more about lighting than he did. The Lencarta lighting courses will be very different, very much a learning experience and we'll stick with portrait/fashion and portrait/artistic nude, we won't be staging glamour courses, so we're trying to avoid competing as such.

The April one is sold out, there are still some vacancies on future days.

I would definitely be interested in this - would prefer £30 using models as like some photographers-i like to remain behind the camera!

Plus im happy to see something like this 'up north' as most are 'down south' in London which is about 4hrs drive each way from Preston, Lancs and requires overnighting etc.

Am I correct in saying that the 3rd of April is fully booked?

:(

It's all settled - each session will involve a pro model and will cost £30 (including VAT) although there may be changes in the future, depending on what people want.

Yes, but there are other dates available at the moment. Please see the website

I'm really looking to this (3 April), something a bit different for me as I normally shoot wildlife.

You just book it online, then you're in. You'll see that there are various dates available, they alternate between portrait & artistic nude and portrait & fashion

Thanks Garry I realised just after I posted thanks for that.

The May portrait and fashion workshop is now fully booked, there are still a few places left on the June Portrait/Artistic Nude and the July Portrait/Fashion workshops.

oh man, would love to go to this but 3 and a half hours each way :(

Just returned from the first sponsored shoot by Garry.

He had booked a second model but she failed to turn up :nono:. The start at the beginning talk by Gary was very informative for somebody like myself who has never been in a studio or shot portrait stuff. The model that did turn up who will be at all the other sessions is patient and professional and perfect to shoot . Gary's aim was to teach lighting and if you happened to get a good shot it was a bonus. With only one model and 8 shooters there was a fair bit of waiting around, but it's a good opertunity to chat. If have some prior knowledge and are looking to spend time getting the right shot this is not for you, if you are a total novice or have the bare basics and want a refresher session then I highly recommend one of these.

Thanks Gary and a big thankyou to Cassie.

Thanks for sharing that with us Scott. I was mildly concerned that I'd be left behind and end up coming away confused. Sounds like its just what I need. I've booked into the May 1st session but it seems ages away. I'm just starting out and waiting for the course before I comitt to buy something.

My mind is nearly made up that I will go with the Lencarta gear but there are so many options of kits and accessories that it becomes a hard choice what to go for. I'm hoping I might have more idea on what I need at the end of it.

You sound like you are the ideal person for this type of workshop Levi enjoy yourself, then go spend lots of money:lol:.

This was a lighting workshop, as described here on the Lencarta website.

My idea of a lighting workshop is a session where people can learn how to understand light and use use it well; something that is very difficult to do by reading books, reading forum posts or trial and error.

After making arrangements for the first one (held today) I thought it might be a good idea to hire a second model, so that people would have more shooting time, and Lencarta agreed to pay for it - but the second model, who was due to arrive at 11 a.m., failed to turn up so I was only able to provide what I had promised to provide in the first place.

We covered the principles of lighting, using hard light, soft light, lighting (and not lighting) the background, creating a sense of depth by selective lighting of the background (as opposed to either black or white backgrounds, which tend to be very 2-dimensional), short lighting, broad lighting, the use of lighting gels, rim lighting, fill light, reflectors, and specialised lighting tools such as spotlights, which are not readily available to most people.

If we had covered fewer techniques we would have had more shooting time, but I didn't (and don't) feel that providing a lot of shooting time should be the priority - there are plenty of 'glamour days' and similar, where people can shoot to their hearts content but where they learn little or nothing. Lencarta is committed to helping people to get the best from their lighting, and I hope that these workshops fill that need.

The model was excellent, and exactly right for this type of training session. What I will do in the future if possible (and it shouldn't be a problem) is to arrange for the model to arrive an hour earlier.

Many thanks Garry for delivering an excellent workshop and thanks must also go to Cassie who as well as being very professional was also extremely patient. I've done a bit of studio work before but learnt a lot from Garry, various techniques and technical aspects were explained and demonstrated clearly. Initially I was disappointed that Garry wasn't concerned about us achieving great shots on the day, but with hindsight I can see that I now have the skills to practice and achieve those results myself.

Highly recommended if you are new to studio lighting or like me, you've had a go but not really sure what you're doing.

What a brilliant day, shame the first model did not turn up BUT it meant that we could cover everything about the theory etc without the distraction of a model being there so if anything I don't think the first model was really that necessary.

I learnt so much at the day dispelled so many old wives tales. I thoroughly recommend the day to anyone. The chance to use all the equipment was very useful.

So Garry, how did I do for my first time?

I would just like to echo the previous comments. The course was fantastic.

One thing I will say about the day is, even if you are a total novice like myself, do not hesitate to get on there. It will benefit all skill levels.

Thanks to Garry, Cassie and all course attendees for making it a great day.

Are you likely to be doing this again?

Yes, every month until November. Please see here
Just 2 spaces left currently for the June one

The day is brilliant and Garry really knows his stuff as it is his job and he has been doing it for years! It really dispels loads of old wives tails too! I am doing the fashion one and taking my daughter too, probably in August.

I need advice on a kit upgrade too now :)

More seriously, ring me if you'd like advice

Only 2 spaces left for June and 4 for July, but 2 new dates have now been added, August and September

Signed up for July. Looking forward to it

Right...just got to find a travelodge or similar....

June and July are now both fully booked, leaving August and September only.

Have already booked myself on 1st may course back at end of march - looking forward to it!

I attended the 1st May class in portrait/fashion photography with Garry Edwards and it was brilliant! There was 7 of us there plus Garry and our model for the day - Jade.
It was like being a kid in a sweet shop being able to try out different set ups with the variety of studio lights and attachments there were there. The day was very well planned out and Garry's knowledge is second to none (40+ yrs in the photography business). We were there from 9.45am and finished about 5.30pm. Well worth the money I paid for it.
I was thinking about purchasing a home studio set and this one-day course was just what i needed to convince me (and my bank balance/husband) that it is definitely something to invest in.
I would recommend this course to anyone interested in studio photography.
