Yes
Is there anything I can do if I think I have found a lens on the internet that looks as though it has been stolen and is now trying to be sold...?

There's probably not an awful lot you can do unless you know for certain it has been stolen (and then it you report it to the police).

It does pose an alternative question, is there a register of stolen camera kit and have you made a note of the serial numbers on your kit? (I haven't yet, but will do it later)

I make notes of and photograph my equipment serial no.s

Ok, I just found this on ebay, here are the reasons why I think its a bit dodgy...

"as i it came into my possesion from a relative" and then "The price has been set with a sensible reserve, less than I paid for it 3 months ago" bit strange

The account hasn't been used since 2006..

Judging by the rest of the listing for this "excelant lens" we're not dealing with the sharpest tool in the box, but that doesn't mean the lens is stolen. Perhaps he bought it from a relative, no-one said he got it for free ;)

I personally wouldnt risk any money on that auction - I could be wrong but no thanks.

:)

"This is a Genuine Canon lens" as opposed to what? It could be legit but I seriously doubt it.

Dunno, the phrase "came into my possession" implies a gift or something and not bought but it could mean anything. He also seems to be very keen to go on about how genuine it is and how it's definitely his etc.

Maybe he nicked it from his relative! hehe

Is that common amongst Canon owners? :naughty::exit:

he lists the lens with cash on collection - so if you are keen visit and check it out - i think most people selling stolen goods would not want face to face contact - if you ask to visit to look and they say no then you may be right. It is worth a look as if that is a real canon 300mm case then that will be worth £2-300........

I think you are on dodgy ground posting a link on here to an auction stating you beleive it to be stolen goods. Stolen?? it may be, but if it is not do you really think it is fair to post a link to the guys ebay account and tell everyone you think it is stolen. If it is a genuine sale, which it may very well be, then this thread is nothing short of slanderous at the least.

The reality is if you seen it and thought this doesnt look right then dont buy it, its what most people would do....not come on a forum and try and hang a guy with little or no evidence whatsoever. It is prefectly reasonable to expect someone to sell something they know very little about and for less value they paid for it. Lets be real, would you put in your advert "paid £500 for it and only want £550"??

I have all mine noted both on paper and in Outlook using this

Microsoft Pro Photo shoot

http://www.microsoft.com/prophoto/downloads/prophotoshoot.aspx

Find it a useful tool really.

Great link, unfortunately it only works with Outlook 2003 or 07, not the 02 version I have. Back to writing it down in the back of a notebook...

Or they could want to meet you "halfway" or in a nuetral place (eg. the pub) and so although you've seen them all you can give is a description.

It's not that long ago folk were posting here that they wouldn't do cash on collection for fear that the 'buyer' would knock them on the head and run off with the goods, you couldn't blame the seller for refusing an onsite look in those circumstances.

I got stung on ebay many a year ago foraround £550 - if someone had warned me at the time I would have been eternally thankfull.

So good for you for raising the subject I say Liam!

Just my 0.2

P.S I am in the market for a 300mm 2.8 IS but am not touching this with a barge pole - to many crooks around and not enough protection.

It's not slanderous at all - it is Libellous and that carries a far higher penalty!

Slander is verbal, libel is written - in English law.

In Scottish law you are correct: both written and spoken malices are slander. Apologies.
