Yesterday was officially the worst day of the year for me so far!

Let me fill you in on the back story a little just so you get the full effect so stick with it...

It began in the early hours of wed night/thur morning when my lady friend decided it was time to call it a day between us. Had about an hours sleep, then we got up thur morning and I took her to Gatwick airport as I had agreed to a few weeks back as she is off to visit her brother for 5 days.
Anyhow, I drop her off, we have a sad final goodbye and I make my way back towards London feeling pretty miserable.

I decide I don't want to go home so I call a friend of mine and head over to his. I stay there till about 11pm and decide I should really come home and try to get some sleep.

Arrive home at about 1120 with the idea of getting in bed and just forgetting the day had ever happened when what do I get greeted with...

I'VE BEEN BURGLED!!!

Goodbye D2x, goodbye brand new 70-200, adios Sigma 105, remote release, filtes etc that were in the camera bag, Mac Mini, Pronto Pro remote control!! Goodbye back door lock where they tried to force it but had no luck, goodbye front door which has been damaged beyond repair (one of those doubleglazed 'security' doors with 3 deadbolts in!).

As you can imagine, NOT how I wanted my day to end. Spent the morning on the phone to insurance companies and hopefully everything should be replaced but to be honest the worst bit is knowing people were in my house!

They must have run in and out fast as they only grabbed things that were small and not hidden away. Thankfully they ran straight past my 200-400 which was in its bag upstairs!

Guess that answers the 'do I keep the D2x when I get a D3' question!

Its sunk in a bit now as this was all yesterday, but I thought it worth mentioning if only to say, if anyone stumbles on an eBay auction or anything for a D2x with no box, no battery and the 10 pin terminal cover missing...or an un-boxed 70-200 VR with no rear cap or accessories...chances are small I know but you never know. I'm in the West London area too, so if anyone near those parts gets offered a 'deal' by a bloke in a pub etc...

sorry to hear that, the fact that your stuff will be replaced is little consolation for the fact that these pricks have been in your house :(

I'm really sickened to hear that mate - I can imagine how you must feel.

For the future, think about an internal light coming on after dark, easy to rig up with a plug in timer, and fit a house alarm, pretty well essential these days.

Really sorry to hear about this. Thieves are the scum of the earth. But maybe this is your bad luck over for the next seven years. Hope you got everything replaced. I know its not a nice feeling when people have been into your house like that as it has happened to me.

What a bad day sorry for you mate. I wont buy from a man in a pub or on a street corner but some do and whilst they do people like you get robbed the buyers are as bad as the thieves. Hope it all gets sorted soon :thumbs:

Closest we have been to a burglary is a damaged back door, they must have been disturbed.
Sorry to hear they got further than that at your house.
Anyway despite now having a full alarm fitted and all the locks that keep insurance companies happy we are still nervous about leaving our house empty.
When we leave an empty house we leave lights and music on and hide valuable things such as cameras, laptops,and jewellery in the most unusual places where anyone but a determined thief with lots of time will not find. We also have security lights fitted all over the property. If we go out together during the day we will leave the other car in the drive.
Yes, some may think we are being a bit paranoia but we have worked hard for what we have and are determined make it as difficult as possible for such pondlife that think ours' is theirs for the taking.
One consolation may be that you yourself did not disturb them on returning home.
 
As I said on the other forum, really upsetting to hear about this mate. ***** need locking up. Hope you get a D3.

sorry to hear your bad news mate, they really are the scum of the earth, i know it wont help you now but i used a uv marker on all my equipment, wrote my postcode on you cant see it unless you put them under a uv light it might help. i got the marker free from the police who were giving them away. but im sure you can buy them aswell

Sucks having something like this happen.

I know it might not be much consolation, but like someone said above, you're alive, and you didn't disturb them. It *could* have been much worse.
The equipment can be replaced, you cannot.
 
And remember, don't take any crap from the insurance company, they are keen on taking your money but not so keen on paying out in the event of a claim.
 
Really sorry to hear about your troubles. Break ups are hard but there is light at the end of that there tunnel. I was burgled once and it sucks, such a violation of your personal space. I hope you get a good deal from the insurance company. Things can only get better as the song says.
 
Gutted for you mate.

I hope that in a few months time, when you're hanging out with a lovely young lady who deserves you and a shiny new D3 round your neck you can look back at this and say 'it was **** at the time, but that nadir marked a turning point in my life and I'm soo happy now'

I know it's hard but try and stay positive.

I'm really saddened to hear this..........it has happened to me so I know how awful it is, but on top of a relationship breakup...that seriously sucks! Have a hug :hug: I hope you get no hassle from the insurers: most are pretty good in fairness to them.

Really gutted to hear this, at the last thing you needed with everything else going on.

I hate these scum, its my worst nightmere and I think about it too much as we have house cats and would hate for anything to happen to them. I think these people should have there bits cut off/out so they can't polute the gene pool any further..

Hope the insurance sort out the replacements ASAP, I pretty sure they will :)

Chin up bud and hope things become easier very quickly.

Sorry to hear about that mate, and not just the burglary.

I wouldn't been a bit scared if I arrived at my house with no back door and a mangled front door, I don't know what I would've done. :runaway: I can't believe some people, breaking into someones house and stealing everything they worked hard for... get a life! :bang:

Hope everything works out OK for the insurance and what not. :hug:
 
Ironically there is a D2X listed on ebay yesterday [friday] with nothing at all by way of boxes, cables, batteries, or anything, also with a missing battery latch [does the D2X battery include that cover btw??] although it does have the multi pin cover, and is in London - what I find more amazing is that people bid on this stuff!! :bang:

Really sorry to hear about this, as said it could have been worse, so 'spose thank your luck stars.

Again look to beefing up your security alarm etc if you've not got one, a handfull of timers dotted around do work a treat eps. if they are coming on/off at different times. You've just got to make your house look to the scum

Look on the bright side you can always get a Canon with your money when its sorted :lol:

Another 'auction site' to keep your eyes on for your kit is http://www.adtrader.co.uk/

Do a National Search on it for the next few weeks and you may get lucky and track it down for Plod.

When you get your new kit (D3 :woot:) Look into getting something called Smartwater and using it on your kit. It's like liquid DNA which can't be seen. You wipe it on your (D3!!) and lenses and it dries. If your kit is nicked and the Police do a warrant on a handler they will normally check it for Smart Water.

good luck with the insurance company. if its photoguard then i hope you have more luck with them than i am having. they are experts at trying to get out of paying. but if you've got evidence of a break in then you should be OK (fingers crossed)

As everyone else has said - sorry to gear about such a bad day - surely the worst bit has to be breaking up with a partner - the burglery was just the 'icing on the cake' - hope the insurance pays up, and maybe it will help you get over the break-up...
My mother was also burgled in west London, albeit 20 odd years ago - 5 times in 3 months - the last time a removals van went up the street loading stuff from about 12 different houses - lots of the neighbours saw the van, no one remembered anything except for the fact that it was a furniture van, and it was the one time I had camera gear in my mothers house - a never-even-fitted-to-a-camera 500mm mirror lens, my Olympus OM2 and a bunch of other stuff - the insurance company refused to pay out and told her that to continue cover, she had to put bars on all windows - she sold up, and has only had one burglery in 20 years in her new house - she came home, opened up and a bloke ran past her, said goodnight and left with half her valuables..

losing the lady and all your kit is a real slap in the gob.
as for the theiving scumbags. may their dangly bits fester and drop off.
i wouldnt wish a burglary on my worst enemy.
my m in law was done over while on holiday some years ago. bust open the underfloor safe , and no one heard a bloody thing. they even pinched the car to cart the stuff off.
fortunately dumped intack with the keys in it 5 or 6 miles away , and found by plod.no prints cos they couldnt be arsed to dust the car.
probably smackheads selling to fund a habit.
i,m lucky realy as my alarm bites people.and barks loudly.
sadly , you,ll prob never see your own stuff again , but hopefully insurers will cough up.
try round the local second hand shops/camera shops if you have serial numbers. you never know.
 
As a copper I deal with these incidents every day but it is clear that it is more than just the loss that that causes upset and inconvenience.

Most burglaries are opportunistic and as such your home security can make a big difference. I know it is a little late now as this has already happened but once the dust has settled and the insurance company have paid out for the stuff, which I am sure they will you really do need to look at a number of basic measures. It sounds like you had reasonable locks based on him failing to gain access via the rear then using the front. We would normally advise good quality locks and PROPER window locks as a minimum first line of defence. (by proper window locks we mean PROPER ones not those rubbish threaded round nut things with a square hole in the top - which actually make it EASIER to force the window). I would say that you are probably there at level one. I would really start looking at a decent alarm. You may find that your insurance company insist on one now but if you look through a CPC catalogue (www.cpc.co.uk) or similar under alarm systems and find one that is NACOSS approved then buy the full kit from them you can get everything for about £150 (if you want any advice please PM me and I will be pleased to or I could give more advice in another post). This would be a £1000+ alarm if fitted by a pro. You can then route the cable yourself and get a pro in to finish it OR if you are handy do it yourself. If you install it or get a friend to help then it would not be NACOSS approved but at least you would know that it is of that same standard. (You might be able to get a local alarm company to certify it for £50)

I have been a copper more than 10 years and been to probably 500+ burglaries and I have still not been to one where someone has actually disabled a pro alarm like this!

The thieving scum bags will probably go elsewhere when they see the alarm box and control panel. If you lived nearby I would offer to help you install it. It really naffs we off big style!

Make sure as well that you check through everything. I have also lost count of the number of people who have reported a burglary then got back to me weeks later because something else was missing and they need to add it because the insurance company are arguing with them. Make sure you know where all your filters, memory cards, rechargeable batteries, extra straps etc etc are and whether they were taken.
 
Sorry to hear your news. :(

Any loss is hard to deal with. As has been posted previously, I hope that these sad events will prove to be a turning point for you. I am a great believer in Karma and that things in life happen for a reason. However this is probably small solace to you at the present time :(:(
