Still Open All Hours

Part of me cannot wait, but it's going to have to be done really well or it's going to be crap, I'm hoping that David Jason would not be a part of it if it were crap though :)

Pretty much my feelings Matt. David Jason isn't immune to making crap though, The Royal Bodyguard springs to mind.

So looking forward to this... hope its as good as it was.

I'm in two minds about this. I admit I'm interested in seeing it. I read also yesterday that they are making a sequel to "It's a Wonderful Life". Now that is a terrible idea!

I work about 100 yards from where they are filming. Loved it the first time round I hope they do it justice.

I think what worries me is they're trying to bring back some of the magic and it'll fail. Not sure how you all felt about Only Fools And Horses. I loved that they finished up as millionaires and hated the abysmal follow up where they become losers again.

Sometimes things should be left as they were. Perhaps re-air the original series?

Should be interesting.

I cant remember what show he was on, but I remember seeing him being interviewd recently, and this was discussed. He said that he thought the script was fantastic, and that he wouldnt have considered it if it wasnt.

I am looking forward to it.

Apparently so, but Granville has inherited it from Arkright, so he is now the grumpy shopkeeper :)
I'm looking forward to seeing what they have done, the origianl was good

Having seen a couple of on-set photos, I had to do a double take as Granville looks a lot like Arkwright!

same here. Thought it was excellent and David Jason was brilliant, at times I thought Arkwright was there in the flesh. Only downside was Leroy, not a great performance by him and stood out a mile compared to nurse Gladys, black widow, the tea man and Johnny Vegas. Overall though very enjoyable. A new series please bbc?

Well I didn't think it was that good at all, sorry but it all felt stale and like a poor photocopy of the original :(

Didn't grab me at all, just seemed like an excuse for random cameos of long forgotten actors and to re-hash some of the old "jokes". Seemed very weak tbh.

Exactly :( very disappointed...

I enjoyed it.

Thats what the original was... rehash of the same old jokes!

Got to agree turn'd over half way through was abit of a let down

Have to agree, we were looking forward to it but it was a let down.

Watching it now. Ronnie barker is a just such a good comic actor that it's just going to be a pale imitation.

Think David Jason is trying too hard to be like him rather than make the character his own.

I enjoyed it, particularly when David Jason stuttered a few times (obviously on purpose) and could barely hold back laughter. I didn't have him down as playing Granville though, I thought he was actually portraying the guy Ronnie used to (was it Arkwright - I'm too young to remember properly).

To be fair it never was going to be radically new with the same writer and cast, more like having a few old friends round , I got a few laughs out of it which is more than can be said for what seems to pass as comedy these days.

I loved the original but this was awful. I didn't get one laugh. I also thought there was a lot of poor rate acting by some of the supporting cast.

Forced. That's what is wrong with it. Couldn't think of the word. The substance of the jokes were ok but somehow when delivered they stopped being so good.

It was probably the lowlight of the whole of the bbc output this year and that includes mrs browns boys. An absolute horror show of a programme.

I thought it very like the original. People forget times and humour change. Having said that, I really enjoyed it, but it felt a bit like the slightly rushed introduction to a new series or a rushed cover of what had happened to all t he original characters. If they did a proper new series or a few 'specials' that were given a bigger time slot I would be happy to give it a look. I thought having Ronnie Barkers photo up was a really nice touch.

Indeed, the jury is still out on this. It is nice to see that there is still enough room for the "old skool" harmless type of comedy instead of loud mouthed comedian swearing every time they open their mouth. Hats off to the BBC for giving it a go.
But this one off special felt all lukewarm and rushed whereas the original episodes all had their own story arcs, and obviousy it's really Ronnie Barker's character that made the whole thing work whereas Granville - as likeable as he is - was a secondary character.

Having seen original episodes I knew it wouldn't be the same without Ronnie Barker, but it did make me laugh, IMO it was good and no swearing, just innuendo which made it better.

:)

My feelings too, no where near as funny as the original, had watched a couple of the originals a few weeks ago and it's was so good. My that was my error

So, probably not worth seeking out on iPlayer but if we stumble upon it while channel surfing, have a squiz at it - it's bound to be repeated repeatedly!

I recorded and watched it this morning. Very disappointed.
