Hi folks.

It's been a while since I last posted here. Unfortunately life got in the way of hobby and to cut long story short - I lost most of my photo gear, for the third time. All I have left is light stand, reflector and few other bits and bobs.

This brings me to the point where I need to buy camera, lenses and flashguns - and I have few questions in this matter.

Camera
So far I have used Nikon and really like their cameras. Howeveer, I have watched few workshops by fairly well known togs and I've heard stuff like "DSLRs are on the way out, mirrorless is the way forward" to quote the first one - J. Lanier. Now I always wanted to get D810 as it would be perfect for what I need it, but this statement makes me think... Should I consider buying into new system or stick with Nikon? If I'd go mirrorless, I would aim at FX from Sony.

If I'd stay with Nikon, I have two options of speeding up the purchase. Camera Jungle (second hand bodies with under 5k clicks can be had for 1700) or HDEW. Which option would be safer in terms of service and warranty?

Flashguns
I have used SB700 in the past and did like it. However it was quite pricey for what it was and didn't really offer much. I have found Godox V860 II which seems to be so much better - built in radio triggers, much bigger guide number, internal lithium battery and price about 90 quid a pop lower than new SB700. Choice seems to be easy, but since I've never used off brand gear I must ask - will Godox be better in long term - ie reliability and/or repairs? I really like the option of not having to change AAs and not messing about with Rx for every flash - I'd aim at getting 3 or them for outdoor work. For indoor shoots I will look at proper heads, but it will be later down the line, now just need to get going again :).

Think that's all for now. Thanks in advance for your input.

Regards

I gave mirrorless a go (A7R3), but just couldn't leave my D750!

If you are going Sony - I would recommend trying one out first. Excellent camera, but just not for me.

Then why consider anything else? You cannot beat perfection!

I still can't get over the fact that I can't move the focus points with the wheels….you can just use the rear thumb wheel, not the front.

Isn't the 850 better?

Indeed but it's better so the 810 can be beaten! Even the 800 is good (although I swapped mine for a Fuji kit since I barely used it in the 12 months I owned it - it was too bulky and heavy for me at the time. I prefer the 750 that I have now alongside the Fuji kit.)

I think that doing research is great. The thing is the SLR has been around for 100years I don’t see it going away just yet. I think mirrorless has its place as does the DSLR. It down to personal choice. I would go and try a few of each out. Maybe worth the money to hire if really in doubt

Been a Nikon shooter for several years, recently almost made the switch to an A7riii but wasn't quite up to the mark for me due to the EVF lag and poor (for me) ergonomics. I've no doubt that mirrorless will be the future and that DSLR will eventually phase out, but I don't see that happening for a number of years yet and I decided to upgrade my D750 to the D850 rather than go mirrorless. There are of course other mirrorless options but not if you want FF. I have m4/3 as a travel system and it's great, but I still like my FF nikon for outright image quality and AF performance.

You're right to consider the lifespan of your purchase, but in all honesty I think by the time mirrorless have really taken over then you'll be ready for a swap anyway. That's what I'm telling myself anyway ;)
