Am I alone in thinking that since the change in the rules regarding classifieds a lot of the replies to posts have been irrelevant and trivial comments obviously just made for the sake of upping the count?:nailbiting:

If you feel that someone's post count boosting, report the offending posts to the green team.

Yes, you are alone. :p

Or what I actually mean is that you are just looking for it, like buying an unusual green car and then suddenly you see them everywhere. Quite honestly, the percentage of people affected by the classifieds automation [it's not a rule change!] would in no way impact so heavily on the rest the of the forum that you would actually notice it. What you are actually seeing is what we have all noticed and commented on over recent years, a general malaise of people just doing the flickr/facebook trivial comments syndrome - because you know about the classifieds thing, you are simply noticing it more. If you genuinely think someone is posting to boost their ratio, report them and we will look into it and if that is the case, deal with it. ;)

One for the Forum Discussion thread?

Undoubtedly there are few posters, boosting thier post count and we are dealing with them as they come to our attention. However as Yvonne has already mentioned, we have seen a slow decline over the months dare I say years, of the quality of feedback and critique comments being posted, and like Yvonne, I would also suggest, it's the social media mentality, of friends praising anything posted, from what the sprog is wearing today or last nights beer making a reappearance, creeping in to TP. Surely this is not the sort of attitude we as members should be encouraging on a forum dedicated to photography?

I'm honest enough to say that the only time I have been on here is to visit the classified section, not to buy though, just to browse...if you see my other post you will see that in fact, the changes to the site have done me a huge favour by giving me the kick up the arse I needed, I use to post here, there and everywhere...was always with my camera but not any more and I'm hoping that's about to change :)

tbh in odd moments of boredom I've been actively looking for it , and there's really very little (with a couple of notable exceptions already reported), as Yv says there is a general laissez faire style of posting where people seemingly CBA to say anything useful, but that's sadly nothing new

The best thing any of us can do to resolve this one (other than reporting any stray cock wombles we encounter) is to up our own game in making worthwhile posts , particularly in the crit and beginners section - if enough of us lead by example this should drag the standard up and give the 'nice shot' brigade an object lesson in what good posting looks like

To be fair, I don't see anything wrong with saying 'nice shot', 'nice set' if I think it is
I'm just saying what I feel and don't always want to critique a pic.

On the other hand, I do sometimes get a bit more detailed and enjoy a good discussion about why something appeals to me or suggest a different take on the subject.

Not sure which content you are referring too, but I have no need to boost my post count, massive amounts of posts are helping people, sorting out problems as site staff, I've started hundreds possibly thousands of photo sharing threads and commented on just as many. Not that I have to justify my posting habits to you :P

Thing is - 'Nice Shot' does nothing than to provide a warm fuzzy feeling, just click like. However, "Nice shot because I like the colours or the composition, or it reminds me of..." doesn't really take much more and opens up the discussion.

I might not want to have a discussion...
Clicking 'like' if there are several pics might not be the best option.

There are no rules to say I must discuss and critique.
Warm and fuzzy is fine by me :) and sometimes has a place.

Perhaps, although do you not think that as a member on here we have a certain responsibility?
We can'r complain about the standard of posts, or the quality of information if we aren't actively engaging.

Or perhaps it is (as I've perused a few times) that this is just a social media influence.

To be honest, one of the things that has REALLY reduced the standard of posts is the use of the mobile app. - hear me out folks, it's not just a luddite rant. By the nature of the lack of a proper keyboard, people posting from phone apps DO tend to post far shorter replys to any discussion than they would if they were sat comfortably in front of their pc. I know it certainly works that way with me, either on the mobile or my tablet. I spend most of my time re-correcting inaccurate autocorrect suggestions whenever I try and post with anything other than a PC, so anything from me, on a small device will be terse at best.

Now, if we're getting regular members posting one-line replies, it starts to become the "default position" - especially for either newer members, or for people who haven't set foot outside the classifieds for the last three years after getting their requisite number of posts - and people start to think that "Nice Shot" or "Excellent" is good enough, where, really all it's doing is blowing smoke up the OP's fundament.

If you read some of my posts you'll see that I do 'discuss'.

No social media influence here, WYSIWYG!
As for the first part, I refer my right honourable friend to my previous reply.

Some people just like to watch and in this forum some people just like to read. Why force them?
People are different. C'est la vie...

Sorry... not helpful at all...
It's a sign post, right? Some people will most certainly find it helpful especially if they have a quantity of chemical waste they no longer need (y)

:D

I've never really thought about this but now you mention it, I can't help but agree. (Need to give myself a shake ;) ) For my own part when I am typing on a small screen it is easy to lose my train of thought as the text quickly runs off the screen. It also also easy to fool yourself into thinking that you have written quite a long post. For example at this point this one hasn't even reached a line on my Mac screen, however I can guarantee I would now have to scroll back up to see what I had already written on my Galaxy S5.

Update: Just looked on my phone it is indeed 12 lines long.

Isn't most of what's posted "irrelevant and trivial"?

I admit I have done this in the past, writing short messages I mean but this has NOTHING to do with upping number of posts as I have done this even before the rule change. It had more to do with previous messages having already pointed out any issues with the image(s) shown and me agreeing with it OR with me not feeling "competent" or knowledgeable enough to mention anyting else other than saying I like the image(s) or not.

I do not "like" all the images I see but if I leave a comment (or "like") it is because I particularly admire them.

If I have anything to contribute that might help others I would, of course, say it. But I still feel I have so much to learn that I tend to leave the more technical comments and critique to those more experienced. Is this right or not? I do not know but I am just being honest.

Finally, being on the go and using my phone or tablet does not provide the most ideal situation to write long messages.

that's fine - however IMO critique has FAR more to give than just a technical appraisal of an image... Even if you don't feel you could give a technical appraisal, there are other ways to interact - a good image should provoke a reaction in the viewer - tell the person posting the image what YOU saw in it, how it made you feel, what it made you think of, or where it took your imagination...

What about some posting 5 photos in 5 separate posts on the same thread straight after each other..?

All just to keep having access to the Classifieds, it's not as though the classifieds are bursting at the seams with very low cost items. Prices on here are pretty average really. So I don't know why people make such a fuss over the Classifieds. I think I may have placed one advert in nearly three years! Or maybe two adverts

I replied to 3 posts in there trying to buy something before joining the staff, at which point I only venture into there to break up fights... perhaps its because of that jaundiced view, that I doubt I'd ever buy or sell anything on there.

And there speaks someone who has lost his classified privileges ;)

Oh I feel bad now for posting, as a new member I wanted to join in and become inspired by images and information, I note that this forum has some strong rules over the classified section, also I see certain members in my time here accused of posting just to gain access to it, I for one would be happy to be locked out for ever, I spend enough on equipment without being tempted to buy other people's cast offs.. I've spent years on forums and seen the same subjects come up time and time again, years ago we used to chat on public radio, similar things got said back then re groups and the quality of some people input.

Anyway I came here as some mates are here, not that I have seen them post, some great images and expertise here also. Please feel free to lock me out of the classifieds for ever :D

Sometimes I reply to posts with in depth critique
Sometimes I reply to posts with smaller comments good or bad
Sometimes I reply with answer to questions
Sometimes I ask questions about posts
and
Sometimes I reply to post with "nice pics"

control freaks who want me to stop saying nice pics can go shove there heads where the squirrels store there nuts

To the rest I say..... Have a nice day ;)

I sold my Camera and lenses on both Gumtree and Preloved. I did think about sticking them on TP Classifieds, but felt easier at the time to stick them elsewhere. I may buy or sell something on the TP Classifieds, if it feels right at the time. But I would not fret over it :)

I just felt it unnecessary to post like this.. Even if the recent rule change came into place..

https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/t...-and-white-photos.517279/page-43#post-7002203

(benefit of the doubt mode) perhaps he didn't realise he could post more than one picture in a single post.

ANyhoo... they're now merged into 2 multi-photograph posts.

ETA: of course, if you see any more blatant examples of this, please don't hesitate to point them out to the staff via a RTM and they'll be dealt with appropriately ;)

Why feel bad? Your posting habits are nothing to be ashamed of. Besides you have over 40 days to go before you can access the classified :D

Sorry - been working
Not forcing anyone, just making the suggestion that a two word post doesn't really add anything that clicking a 'like' button won't do (and is quicker).
Same as I have no problem with someone saying that's crap (especially in the art discussions) but please explain why. Photography is a subjective practice, not all images tick everyone's boxes, so it's possibly thought provoking if it's explained why it's not liked (or liked). It promotes discussion, which after all is what this forum is about.

Point taken.
I guess I'll have to try and explain why I like a certain image... or just click the "like" button if I do not want to explain why.

In any case, I will keep admiring some people's images and learning from all of them.
