SSD? So What's That Then?

Well my SSD arrived today :D

I have installed it and I am now doing windows updates, once all that is done I will do the various tweaks that have been suggested.

Just went to set the bios to AHCI and I do not appear to have an option to make this change anywhere in my BIOS.

Any ideas as to why this is?

Is it really necessary to make this change?

What motherboard have you got?

Normally it's in the Hard Disk Type part. Choices will be IDE / AHCI

You will most likely need to reinstall windows though when you do that.

I have a cheap foxconn

I am hoping it isn't really necessary to make this change because I don't really want to have to spend another night re-installing windows and all my files/programs

You should have it set to AHCI. If you installed with IDE mode you may get the BSOD if you change now to AHCI. There is a registry edit that can be done to make windows look for a driver instead of crashing. this was the first google search result for info. That link also tells you where the option is likely to be in the bios.

That didn't work :(

So how do I change this/do it properly from a fresh install?

I don't remember seeing any options

I think you may have miss understood Neil

I am unable to change the SSD to AHCI, none of the Reg Edit tweaks have worked.

the tweak is just so the system does not crash after you change the bios for AHCI. You can't set the drive to AHCI in windows.

whats the model of the foxconn, maybe we can look up the manual and advise? i cant believe there wouldnt be an IDE/RAID/AHCI setting, even the cheapest of boards ive had there is this setting.

The manual says it is a V1.0 manual for a H55M series mother board

The P/N is: 3A2228F00-HE7-G

My search on that MB series showed one computer forum thread where the OP found that a bios update was needed to allow AHCI on that mainboard. It was a 'mainboard screwed because of failed bios update' thread so maybe a case of if it works don't fix it!

Yup just found out myself that I need a BIOS update.

The foxconn website is ***** though and judging from the title of the thread you found all might not be so good.

So where can I get a reasonably priced motherboard that I use my I3 with?

My current board is Intell H55 (H55M-S)

Socket 1156

Oh and I guess I will need a new cooler to replace the stocl one, some thermal paste to I am guessing.

Any good vids for a n00b showing how to fit a processor and heat sink?

There will be loads on youtube on how to fit the processor. it is dead easy.

Can't help much with mainboard choices - I've only ever bought Asus. Ebuyer and Amazon reviews can be helpful when choosing.

I am just looking for something that is not going to break the bank and that will fit my current processor/specs

You shouldn't need a new cooler either - you should be able to switch stuff over.

Look for a SATA III Mobo if you can.

I limited by my processor as to what mobos I can go for, they have to be socket 1156

At least I think that's the case

That should not be a problem though. Just lift the processor and heatsync out of your old mobo and replace on the new one - same cooler should work and you won't need any more paste (unless you actually remove the cooler)

I can't recall any processor changes I was able to do like that?

The CPU clamp almost always gets in the way of the cooler.

If you are willing to get a new main board anyway it might be worth having a go at flashing the bios on the one you have.

Here is that thread i found earlier. Not read past the first post but it seems down to using a windows based utility rather than one you have to boot from or run from the bios so there may be a safer way of doing it.

oh dear...it was still in stock when i posted (checked it). Was listed on hotukdeals so they don't last long :( sorry about that

Can anybody recommend me a reasonably priced, as in cheaper the better, motherboard that will fit my specs?

I am having a hard time locating one and if I don't its usually out of stock.

Mind you I could of course be totally looking for/at the wrong thing :D

I don't know a lot about socket variations for processors but it looks like there aren't many to choose from for your chip.

have you thought about selling the processor and board on ebay and starting from scratch with something more common?

I have been looking at pricing up a new mobo and CPU, trying to find one with 4 RAM that is worth having at a reasonable price as I want to re-use my RAM

As you can guess I am very new to all this computer self build stuff but I am relishing the challenge and get a real buzz when things "work" :)

It's asy so long as you take your time and make sure all bits are compatible with each other :)

What about this mobo, it fits my specs and I believe it will handle my SSD 3 as it has SATA 6Gb/s ports

Clicky

Thanks for everyone's help and advice by the way, it is very much appreciated

That's the one I would have picked from my previous post link.

I'd ditch the ram too and buy fresh, more chance of compatibility. I had a mare with one sandybridge board and memory.

Trying to keep costs down so will keep the RAM

Only bought it a few months ago and it should be compatible according to the blurb on eBuyer

Also I would like to get an after market cooler for my CPU, any suggestions?

Check the motherboard manufacture page for a list of supported brands, like I say one board I had would not boot with two sets of memory despite them being the correct rated speed.

OK Neil will do, thanks for the tip.

Any thoughts on a cooler?

depends on your budget and space in your case :)

the akasa venom gets a good writeup, it is HUGE though. wouldnt fit in my case lol

anything by akasa, scythe etc. i run an old alpenfohn panorama (bit hard to find now) on my clocked i7-2600k and works very well.

Any thoughts on a cooler?

I have this one in my PC and also used it for a recent i7 build. If you are going to overclock then you might need something bigger but only might need. Works fine and is reasonably quiet as it is speed controlled by the bios so rarely running flat out.
