Hi, I have been taking pictures of childrens karate exams where 6 or more children will be doing their gradings in front of a qualified examiner in a medium sized sports hall. Because of the low light situation and that fact that I cannot afford a zoom lends that will go any lower in aperture than F4.2 I have been taking my portrait studio strobes which although give great results take far to long to recharge and because they are triggered via a wirteless trigger other cameras flash units are setting them off thus I end up missing some great shots. The obvious answer is a better lens but I cannot afford to do this yet. I have been thinking about constant lighting but again as I cannot afford special lights was wondering if I could use something more basic such as a couple of standard exterior security Halogen Floodlights which range froom 100w to 500w. I could adjust my white balance accordingly. What are your thoughts on this as I am struggling with this.
Many thanks

Was sort of trigger are you actually using? Is it one that picks up your on camera/pop up flash?

I really want to get away from the flash lights and use constant lighting as the charge takes a few seconds and I miss the good shots. I almost want to be able to take lots of quick shots

Have you considered hiring a lens for the event? Costs way less than actually buying one and gives you an opportunity to 'test drive' one and get better results?

I am just surprised that they allow you to use strobes ...

My suggestion is to just hire the lens for the weekend/event, if you can't afford one.

Thanks for your responses, I have access to a F2.8 zoom but only as a one off to try - would this be a low enough aperture?

Also do you think it might be plausable to use the 'work around' idea of a couple of floodlights until I could afford a decent lens

Did anybody have any final thoughts regarding the possibity of using a couple of garden flood lights as a constant lighting aid?
Many thanks.

I see no reason why you shouldn't use big old floodlights. (It works for Warner Brothers....) You might have some issues balancing with the (neons ?) in the hall though. I'd be tempted to think about diffusing them with something but watch out for setting things on fire !

Or go the whole hog and rent yourself a couple of HMIs.

Best wishes
Monty

floods really don't pump out that much power as they're continuous.

I personally would speedlight it, hit the strobist site for some ideas, he actually details lighting basketball games in some detail
