Yes
New laptop time!
For photo editing on the move and Internetery... and that's about it!
I'm currently using a Lenovo ThinkPad T420 IntelCore i5 6GB Memory 120 GB SSD Hard Drive which I bought reconditioned in 2017

Things I don't like about it: It's getting a bit slugish with the latest Lightroom /PS incarnations and I don't like the screen...tilting it or changing position greatly affects the "brightness".

What I would like:
Windows! (Yes, I know. But I'm familiar with it.)
I'm not bothererd about latest lightest, slimline...weight / size not a major concern.
1TB Memory...I think that should be enough. I'll be using it for festivals, holidays etc then transfering to desktop when home.
Must be fast enough and have enough oomph to handle anything Adobe can chuck at it now and for the next 5 years.
Must have fabulous screen not affected by this tilting bussiness and be calibratable (Currently using a Spyder 5Pro)
Must have enough usb sockets for external hard drive, mouse (Don't like track pads.) and DVD player...I assume they no longer come with them
I have no brand allegiance...I've had Dell in the past and had no problem, other than that I don't really care.
If budget wasn't an issue (Within reason!) what would you buy?

What about this for starters?

No specific recommendations but you want to tick the following boxes:

  • Oled screen
  • May as well get one of the new copilot+ compliant laptops
  • 32gb ram if you can find one
  • Replaceable nvme, and stick best 2-4tb in it on day 1
  • Dedicated graphics. Not integrated Uber crap. You will be doing more than email and spreadsheet
  • Try and get 15 or 16" models. You may not use it much, but when you do 13 is a massive pain
Chances are you will be looking at the top end offerings

Some good advice. Couple of responses.....

Can anybody explain what this actually means w/o resorting to marketing speak? I'm a _huge_ fan of Copilot and use it every day but none of the 3 PCs I use are copilot+ compliant - why would I pay for something like that?

I've carried a lot of laptops - get a light one ;) The difference between my wife's inch thick work laptop and my latest HP is extraordinary after an hour's walk.

I also wouldn't worry too much about USB sockets. It's amazing what you can stick in a USB-C using something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/UGREEN-Revodok-Adapter-Display-MacBook/dp/B0D1XLNWP2/ Couple of USB-Cs and you'll be laughing.

Same here.. I had a 13” and got a 16” MBP recently; wouldn’t go back tk a 13”. Yes it’s a bit heavy but,, I find it way better for posture given its extra hight.

Just got an Asus Vivabook 16 inch Oled screen 144htz, Nvidea geforce 4060 GPC with 8gb Ram i7 1tb ssd hsd 16gb ram built in and empty slot so put another 32gb cruxial stick Running win 11 Doesnt even bat an eyelid to Photoshop even when using AI programs, just over a grand it cost I know there are far better specced machines out there but for the price im well happy

Besides getting the latest spec pc, as opposed to the old 14th gen intel or AMD 7 series, Adobe may start making a very good use of npu before too long, so you may as well have it.

I appreciate that. However it usually goes like this: I carry it 20m to the clients office and bang my head on 13 screen all day trying to edit adverts and create packaging. Not fun

You need better clients :)

"You got a desk I can use?" Sure just jack in with USB and the monitors will fire up. Usually takes a couple of mins to get them all laid out but hot desks with dual screens are really common now.

Yes

They have a desk don't worry, but clearly no editing grade monitors for sure. Much prefer working from home where I don't need to even touch the said laptop

Ok. Thanks forthe responses so far, most helpful.
I Googled "Copilot+" as I had no clue what it was...not much wiser now but not to worry!
If I was to go for this: https://www.dell.com/en-uk/shop/laptops-2-in-1-pcs/xps-16-laptop/spd/xps-16-9640-laptop
I'd have some choices to make re. :

Processor.
Graphics.
Memory (RAM?).
Systems Management.

Presumably more / bigger is better?
I would be looking at the OLED screen and 1tb storage (Possibley 2tb if it doesn't affect the price dramatically!

Or should I be looking elswhere?

Thoughts very much appreciated. (y)

I'd not priced it up yet but yes, from reviews I get the impression it's pricey even if well specc'ed...thing is I don't really know what I need or can get!

TBH if you can afford a decent spec XPS 16 then I'd say go for it.

I bought a new refurb XPS in 2014 and used it for 9 years until the keyboard started playing up. The build quality is excellent, screens lovely - mine was QHD touch XPS15 - and performance still adequate at the end. Weaknesses? The keyboard and batteries generally. I had 2 keyboards (1st damaged by a swelling battery) and the battery just about lasts 3 years, which is also true for our work Dell laptops.

I bought Lenovo this time round, but would have loved another XPS.

mine is 16 inch Oled 144htz screen i7 processor with Nvidia 4060 graphics card that has 8gb ram the motherboard has 16gn Ram built in with a spare slot it has a 1tb ssd 2 USB 3.2 ports and one USB-c Thunderbolt 4 port capable of 1050 gb transfer speeds. cost me £1190 plus i spent another £48 on amazon for an another stack of RAM 32 gb taking total Ram to 56gb. It run Photoshop which is RAM and processor hungry with AI programs and Topax AI, and doesn't even break into a sweat

I'd get yourself over here for a look:

In the product line tab at the top you *may* need to select XPS. There's one for £2K that fits your criteria, and will be a stonking machine. I bought mine through the store and I'd never have known it wasn't new.
This one?
