Sony RX100

What is wrong with the one (Strap) that came with the camera?

Nothing. :D I mean it's your standard compact camera wrist strap, but my Sony and Panasonic csc cameras only came with cheap and nasty neck straps so I got a variety of wrist straps for them and thought people might want to know about other options for wrist straps if they were wanting to pimp up their RX100. (Instead of or in addition to a grip).

I just stuck a bit of helecopter tape on the monitor not paying £11 for something that does the same job.

Grip wise i havent struggled yet even when up a mountain with my thick gloves on.

There was a wrist strap in the box.....? You'll be telling me there was a manual and some software next.

Soon as I had camera, battery and charging lead it went in the loft ;)

There's also 2 little clip things, not sure what they do! I bought mine used, the strap was clearly never used, the manual never looked at [nor by me when I got it] and those 2 black clip things still in the plastic wrap.

I got an email from flipbac confirming my order this morning, and also asking if buyers would take pictures of the grip on their cameras once fitted :D I might just do that and pass it on to them, if it turns out to be decent.

Those clip things are for sitting a neck strap, not sure why they didnt just include a neck strap.

Got my £50 cashback today, so didnt take that long.

They are for attaching paracord to.....

Just finished up editing a wedding I shot entirely on small cameras. Still were on Fuji X series and video was on RX100. Like this combo a lot....

I have decided im not a fan of the HDR mode, they dont look right to me. The auto dynamic range isnt bad but still not great.

Nice bike! Need to take my own out more often, been very lazy about it lately.

I don't use any of the other modes bar standard RAW shooting, in either aperture priority or manual, or for quick shots of the kids and cat, sometimes I'll use the advanced auto, which does a fine job.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 is an enthusiast compact camera based around a 20MP 1" CMOS sensor. It features a a Zeiss-branded 28-100mm equivalent F1.8-4.9 stabilized lens featuring Zeiss T* coatings to minimize internal reflection. The rest of its specification is pretty impressive too - a 1.2 million dot 3.0" LCD (VGA resolution but using Sony's WhiteMagic technology to offer greater brightness or improved battery life), and 1080p60 video capture or 1080i with the ability to shoot a 17MP stills without interrupting movie recording
SO go for it

Who is that aimed at?

I might switch to RAW and see how i go, its all i use on the DSLR so its no hardship to process them i suppose.

Even when I shot jpeg only with a bridge cam, I would always take the files to the pc and tinker with them. May as well be shooting RAW if you do any PP at all. If you use LR4 you may need to grab the update before the RX100 RAW files will work, if you haven't updated already.

As for random poster there, no idea - seems like a direct c&p from an advert?

Already got the update, thanks.

Yes i though it was an odd post, seeing as we all have the camera, its not like we need reminding what we have. Maybe he is after getting on the selling section fast.

Look at his previous posts. Judging by the username a repeat offender.

which software are you using to edit your video work please - Sony PlayMemories Home or another one.....and are you using MP4 or AVCHD
I have read that only MP4 will be able to play on an iPad anyone know any different??
Thanks
Dave

I haven't given the video much of a testing yet, but when I stitch clips together for family vids or whatever, I just use Windows live movie maker.

Currently just converting AVCHD to MP4 and editing from there but I know there's a better way....

Just back from a trip to Belgium (of all places) where I used the RX100 pretty heavily for low light video. It was kind of cool....

Did you know that you can use an Eye Fi card with the RX100.
There is no mention in the shortened version of the Manual but in the extended edition there is reference.
The problem I had was that I could not see any reference to Eye Fi in the Menu so I asked a question on another website I visit and a reference will only appear once an Eye Fi card is inserted.

Dave...AKA camerashy

Really liking the look of this camera for the wife. Basically she is after a really good compact with the following, great IQ, pocket size and good flash ability for indoor shots.

Now after reading through this the IQ looks amazing, it's obviously pocket size (I bought her a G11 and that was 'massive') so only thing now is the flash. I see it can be tilted for bounce, any good? Anyone got any indoor portraits sooc?

Thanks

Oh, nice :)

Have it working with my desktop but not with the Android yet (that's an Eye-Fi problem rather than a RX100 problem).

I think we can all agree that in a long illustrious line of bad documentation, the RX100 documentation is the worst ever...... :)

Im going to try AVCHD at weekend, see if there is much improvement from MP4, aslo swapping to RAW for more flexability.

Flash is fine, what little I tested of it at least. ISO performance is good enough that you'll rarely need it. And yup, you can tilt the flash back for bouncing, works fine with a low , white ceiling at least.

Cyberlink Power Director use it for all my video editing.

Also where is best/cheapest to buy? I think Amazon so far.

Amazon is usually among the cheapest.

Ah cool. Still coming to terms with the fact that Macs aren't the best choice for this :(

Final Cut isn't that happy with MTS files.

Thought Macs were supposed to be the dogs for things like video?

Yeah - they can chuck video files around at alarming rates.

But AVCHD is a kind of weird format. I have to import it directly from the camera or go through a transcode step.

Once they are in, it's a pretty nice solution but since I don't know what I'm doing with the import it's getting frustrating....

So you cant drag the file from the camera onto the computer, that would be annoying.
Anyway im hoping there better than MP4, as i havent been overly impresed with them.

I have just been playing around with the camera and notice that when in auto focus area - flexible spot you cannot use the zoom control but you can with centre or multi focus areas.
do I have a faulty camera or is everyone's the same
thanks

Nothing faulty, same here. It's one of the niggles I hate about this camera. Flexible spot really should be better implemented. You seem to be able to only use it once after going through the menu to locate it - if you then want to change the spot for the next image, go through the same thing. Annoying. I guess they think most compact users will only use the centre focus point.

Thanks Cagey, I though I had a faulty one for a moment....thanks for putting my mind at rest wish Sony would sort it with a firmware upgrade and glad you are pleased with your grip at a bargain price.
Dave

That looks pretty.

How is it held on? That magic tape that you can remove?
