Today was just supposed to be a quick visit to gloucester to find a post office.

Thought I would have a quick browse in Jessops (as you do)

Five minutes later I walk out carrying a brand new D300s (yep it definately took about 5 minutes and no more)

Argh what have I done - I only popped in to look for 77mm CPL filters - but they had a D90 and a D300s in the shop and I asked the sales guy if I could feel them (it did come out that badly and raised a bit of a chuckle) - knew I didnt like the feel of the D90 but next min I am handing over my credit card for a new 300s body.

Shock now set in - do I need this? Is it going to make a difference? What fit of madness possesses me to browse with a credit card. Someone tell me I am not completely mad, do I have a timelimit to take it back
 
sorry - you're completely mad........but you've come to the right place. :)
 
You can take it back if you haven't opened it for a full refund i'm sure. Even if you have opened it, as long as its all in the box shouldn't be an issue
 
enjoy it and have fun - you sure can't take money (or a camera) with you when you're gone. :)
 
well ... I have now sat here gazing at it for 15 minutes - yes just gazing.

I am justifying this as I had my old DSLR body for 8 years, its done 100k+ shutter actuations (probably) - and its still going strong but its nice to have two bodies so you dont have to mess about with changing lenses :-) - it sounds reasonable to me.

Now I just need a larger camera bag (anyone selling a domke f2 or so?) and will probably finally have to sell my old film SLR and its lenses (it'll be like losing an old friend even though it hasnt been used in about 7 years)
 
24-70 f2.8 should be your next port of call.

May as well do it proper.

Sounds like this is you're first experience of this. Impulse buying of gear.
Don't worry to much, it wont be your last.:D
 
keep it and make the most of it, cus after May 6th you'll be selling it, cus you can't afford to keep it (whoever wins) :lol:

My D100 was actually impulse bought at the time and thinking about it that cost more than this so that makes me feel better.

24-70 f2.8 should be your next port of call.

May as well do it proper.

i've only recently bought the f2.8 tamron 28-75 so i might just hold off on that for a bit ... though i was tempted by the 28-80 f2.8 in the classifieds the other week but i thought I'd bought too many lenses recently
 
I used to work for Jessops (for my sins) and you can take it back within 14 days as long as you haven't opened the software that comes with it. At least they used to be the rules, may have changed. But I'd just keep it if I were you! You've just got a bit of buyers remorse which you'll get over when you take it out for a good test run!

Jessops have a 30 day returns policy.

It was worse later when i went to pay for it and I just stood there and said - "but I only wanted to fondle it" - I thought the people standing behind me were going to choke. :bonk:
Can't snap am waiting for the battery to charge up - and thinking I'm going to the Marwell TP meet on Sunday - new toy new toy
 
take it back - go full frame instead - then you can impulse buy a load of new lenses too
 
hang on a minute..... what's the limit on your credit card? i'm sure you'd be able to hammer it to the max before the end of this week if you really put your mind to it!!

Congratulations. I say keep it, particularly as your existing SLR is 8 years old with 100K actuations - you clearly make use of your kit and don't just let it sit on the shelf. Enjoy! :)

ha ha ha not going there

well box is opened, battery on charge (neat uses the same battery as my D100 so can swap) and am settling down to War and Peace (ie the user manual)

Yeah...married the wrong woman three times, so far only the first two know about it.
 
You guys are so slap happy with your cash. You should be saving for a rainy day, and not blowing silly amounts on stuff like lenses and camera bodies.

I adhere to the school of thought, if it aint broke, don't fix it. That's why I'm going to break my D3 soon, so I can replace it with a D3X.

We all do it, I popped in to Jessops myself only a few weeks back to price check a polarizing filter for my recently acquired 18-105 VR lens, and came out with a 70-300 VR lens. Only the fact that it was a small outlet and they had no stock of a D300s saved me from walking out with that as well.

you know its only now reading this thread that I remember something - i forgot completely about the polarising filter - doh the one reason for going there in the first place
 
Enjoy your new toy. I am sure it will give you an excellent service for years to come.
If it makes you feel better find a really cheap lens for D100 and flog it on ebay as a professional kit for a sweet buy-it-now price. I have seen so many of those listings lately, and they do get bought!

Oh dear..............when will the third know? As just being seperated myself there is no way I would want to marry again.

As for the OP's impulse purchase, if you can afford it, keep it and enjoy it! If you can't afford it, get your money back now b4 it's too late.;)
 
I did the "impulse buy" thing just over a year ago and like you only popped into Jessops for a nose...10 minutes later I walked out of the place with a 6 month old 5D Mark I with the 24-105mm L IS USM kit lens for a grand. Got home and told the misses and she nearly swung for me :D
 
You have been well and truly got by what we call the 'puppy dog close'!

When the family comes in to look at the puppies you are selling you give one to the child or Woman. The next phrase is inevitable:

'Oh please Dad/Husband (insert as necessary) can we keep him' Looking at you with doleful eyes!

I sold a lot of cars using the same principal many years ago.

To answer you question, as has already been stated, if you can afford it keep it. If you can afford more take it back and buy a D700/D3S/D3X, you will be amazed! If you cannot afford it, beg or steal until you can!

I decided to keep it (it wasnt a hard decision once I started looking at the manual and all the gizmos it could do - and I didnt think they'd like it back once I'd drooled all over it).

I'll keep my D100 as a backup as well - it was a cracking bit of kit especially for how old it was. It was just that I had thought I wasnt going to buy a new body until later in the year as I have just bought all new lenses - upgraded the glass first. I will though probably sell my Nikon F3 hp and all its lenses as it is now a bit redundant to my requirements.
