Some people selling on auction site, taking the mick!

Ticking on the 'completed items' box and looking at the prices for those items that have actually sold should answer some of the questions above.

Was seeing how much a lego item sold for on ebay. Had parts missing.... Didn't sell.

Got a notification to say its been relisted last night, for more money...

Not my problem, but if you can get someone sucked in then good on ya,

I have just purchased a Camera on that site,I had been looking for about two months.

In the end I decided based on the photographs, well done and clear, the description which stated as far as I know, to invest a large amount of money. Did I care NO, as if it had not been what I expected I would have been able to claim my money back(paypal).

As it was I have an icon of a Nikon film camera at 1/3 of the current market price.

Very happy and you have to be patient.(y)

Not so much as the weird replies. ;)

People selling items that are broken, for the same price it can be bought new. Weird some people can't understand that. ;)

Do buyers have no agency? If you have replacement parts it can be incredibly useful to buy a faulty unit or something with a missing charger, they're not forcing you to do anything and if they're very clear on the condition there's no dishonesty.

Regarding prices, most buyers want a discount so most sellers will list items for prices higher than they expect to sell for, if they'd posted it lower they would then have to sell even lower so not much point criticising them for the price, if you don't like it... don't buy it.

Not forgetting those sellers listings will also face fees and taxes so it's entirely possible it's not worth selling for less.

Some incomplete cameras and sometimes with faults, get listed for ridiculous prices. Sometimes dearer than what you can buy new.
If a model has been discontinued and you want to repair one, a broken one is a good source of components. I frequently sell broken film cameras for astounding amounts.

Who said they were forcing me to do anything? Where did I mention dishonesty? :)

LOL really!

You can put any price on an item, but doesn't mean its the going rate.

My neighbour put a silly price on his house and wondered why it didn't sell
Are people buying these knackered cameras?
Maybe people are simply offering, what they think the item is worth. Maybe some sellers do accept the offer.

You said they're taking the mick, my mistake then clearly you were implying they were being completely honest.

What's laughable is you thought this was a valid complaint in the first place.
Let me just tweak a few things. Added ..;)

Plenty space for more..:D

Out of sight, out of mind...:)

Something that's bugging me. Why can we not mention the site's name? Is it like Beetlejuice or when you accidentally google 'google'?

I really don't understand why someone is taking the 'mick' for advertising something incomplete on an auction site, After all you're a big boy and can make your own mind up whether or not to bid. Just smile and move on its not worth getting worked up about and just feel smug when you've avoided paying too much for something incomplete or broken that you weren't going to buy anyway.

By asking ridiculous prices...

I really don't know why I bother.

You're confusing your opinion for fact, if those prices really are ridiculous then they won't sell thus the only person being hurt is the seller.

As I explained above just because it's listed at a certain price doesn't mean it actually sells for that price, if it does sell at that price then you're probably mistaken and it was in fact the correct price.

The first lesson in marketing (or it was on the course I did): the correct retail price of a good is the price the public are willing to pay for it. How do you determine what people are willing to pay? By offering the good at a given price and seeing if anyone buys it

Only if really cheap, they make good display items. I have a large collection of Polaroids I bought at Car boot sales for £1 each :D

Oh no, not you again...:)

Just spotted something on that certain auction site. No battery, no charger, no box etc. Just working out what all those bits costs, when I have worked that out. I will make an offer, and explaining that those items will need to be bought.

I never feel comfortable buying things that are possibly (probably) nicked.

I have bought used camera stuff on there before. But I know my price limit beforehand & I think the most I bought (value) was a 135L about 5 years ago...... Selling seems to be a pain now though with all the siding with the buyer etc I read a post recently where someone bought a camera body (Sony A??) & then two months later claimed the base was damaged & eBay sided with them & the seller ended up however much £££ out of pocket....!!

I do buy lots of bits & pieces on there though. Certainly worth it for that for sure.

One good bit of advice is to know your price and stick to it, if you can remain neutral when buying you'll probably make better decisions but obviously easier said than done.

They treat their sellers as if they were businesses, even if they change their mind and admit it you usually have to eat the original shipping cost and if they lie then you have to pay the return shipping too. You can see this in their return policy, they're pushing people towards 30 or 60 day returns, the payment I think can be reversed over a 180 day period. Expected for a business but bloody awful for your average punter.

It's not quite as bad as I make it sound but it can be a pain, on average I think they've actually improved a little for both parties in a trade but at the end of the day a bad seller or buyer can make things very unpleasant for the other person. Fortunately most people are decent and things normally work out...
